Overview of Air Cooled Chillers

Aug 9, 2024

Notes on Air Cooled Chiller

Introduction

  • Types of chillers:
    • Water cooled chiller
    • Air cooled chiller
  • Purpose: Lowers the temperature of water from the AHU (Air Handling Unit) and returns it.

Equipment in Chillers

  • Both types consist of:
    • Compressor
    • Condenser
    • Expansion Valve
    • Evaporator

Differences between Chill Types

  • Water Cooled Chiller:

    • Uses water from the cooling tower to reduce refrigerant temperature.
  • Air Cooled Chiller:

    • Uses a fan motor to reduce refrigerant temperature.

Working Principle of Air-Cooled Chiller

Key Components

  1. Evaporator

    • Functions as a heat exchanger.
    • Typically a shell and tube design:
      • Outer shell and internal coils.
    • Water from AHU flows through coils; refrigerant surrounds the coils.
    • Refrigerant absorbs heat from water, causing it to boil and turn into vapor.
  2. Compressor

    • Sends vaporized refrigerant from the evaporator to the condenser.
    • Compresses the refrigerant, increasing its temperature and pressure.
  3. Condenser

    • Contains coils and fan motors.
    • Refrigerant travels through coils while air is blown over them by fan motors.
    • Air removes heat from the refrigerant, lowering its temperature.
  4. Expansion Valve

    • Receives refrigerant at high temperature and high pressure from the condenser.
    • Sprays refrigerant to expand it, reducing its temperature and pressure before it enters the evaporator.

Cycle Continuation

  • The process repeats as the refrigerant flows back into the evaporator, maintaining a continuous cycle.
