Overview
This lecture explains the 7Es model of lesson planning, outlining each stage and its purpose in scaffolding student learning, primarily in science but adaptable to other subjects.
The 7Es Model
- The 7Es are Elicit, Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Extend, and Evaluate.
- The 7Es expand upon the original 5E Constructivist learning cycle developed by Rodger Bybee (Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, Evaluate).
- The model provides a sequential framework for lesson and curriculum planning.
- The cycle may take more than one lesson to complete, depending on subject complexity.
Description of Each Stage
- Elicit: Assess students’ prior knowledge and address misconceptions using quizzes or quick activities.
- Engage: Capture interest, pose big questions, and introduce new concepts through teacher explanation or modeling.
- Explore: Students independently or collaboratively investigate problems or conduct activities with teacher as facilitator.
- Explain: Teacher helps students build understanding by connecting findings to key concepts via questioning and discussion.
- Elaborate: Students independently apply and formalize learning by answering guiding questions and practicing skills.
- Extend: Learners apply concepts in new contexts or make connections beyond the lesson, deepening transfer and generalization.
- Evaluate: Assess learning through peer/self-assessment, quizzes, or reflective activities; evaluation is ongoing but culminates here.
Application and Adaptation
- The 7Es method is effective across various subjects, not just science.
- The structure supports planning, teaching, and lesson observation outcomes.
- Teachers may adjust, combine, or emphasize stages based on lesson goals.
Key Terms & Definitions
- Elicit — Assessing students’ existing knowledge and misconceptions at the lesson’s start.
- Engage — Motivating students and introducing the lesson’s main ideas.
- Explore — Students investigate concepts independently or in groups.
- Explain — Building understanding with teacher support, using student findings.
- Elaborate — Independent application and extension of knowledge by students.
- Extend — Transferring learning to new situations or broader contexts.
- Evaluate — Assessing and reflecting on learning outcomes.
Action Items / Next Steps
- Review and experiment with provided 7Es lesson planning templates and PowerPoints.
- Consider trialing the 7Es method in your next lesson plan.
- Reflect on stages that may need emphasis or adaptation for your subject.
