Jun 12, 2025

Overview

This lecture explains in detail the types of pronouns, their usage, cases (Subjective, Objective, Possessive), and common mistakes.

Definition and Examples of Pronouns

  • A pronoun is a word that takes the place of a noun.
  • Pronouns are used instead of repeating the noun repeatedly.
  • Examples: Sonu = He/She, Diploma = It, Children = They.

Types of Pronouns

  • Personal Pronouns: For a person (Speaker/Listener/Third Person).
  • First Person: I, We
  • Second Person: You
  • Third Person: He (male), She (female), It (inanimate), They (plural)

Cases of Personal Pronouns

  • Subjective Case: Subject in a sentence (I, He, She, We, They, You)
  • Objective Case: Object in a sentence (Me, Him, Her, Us, Them, You, It)
  • Possessive Adjective: Shows ownership of something (My, Your, His, Her, Its, Our, Their)
  • Possessive Pronoun: Shows possession (Mine, Yours, His, Hers, Ours, Theirs)

Possessive Pronoun vs Possessive Adjective

  • Possessive pronouns replace nouns: Mine, Yours, Hers.
  • Possessive adjectives come before nouns: My book, His pen.

Correct Use of Cases

  • Subjective case comes before the verb, objective case comes after the verb.
  • Objective case comes after prepositions (to, between, on).
  • Example: Let me do the work. (Let I... is incorrect)

Comparison of Cases

  • Compare subject with subject, object with object only.
  • Example: She is taller than I (correct), She is taller than me (incorrect)

Double Meaning Comparison

  • "I like my brother more than her" (I like my brother more than she does - meaning changes)
  • "I like my brother more than she" (I like my brother more than she does - both cases have different meanings)
