The Four Conditionals
Zero Conditional
Structure: Present simple verb in both if clause and main clause
Usage: General truths, scientific facts
Example Sentences:
If you heat water, it evaporates.
People die if they don't drink enough water.
If British people get bored, they talk about the weather.
Note: Can replace "if" with "when" without changing meaning.
First Conditional
Structure: Present simple after "if"; future (will) in the main clause
Usage: Possible future scenarios
Example Sentences:
If we don't leave now, we will miss the train.
If you study hard, you will pass the exam.
Modals can be used in place of "will" for recommendations or permission:
If you study hard you could pass the exam.
Second Conditional
Structure: Past simple after "if"; would + infinitive (or present continuous) in the main clause
Usage: Unreal situations in the present or future
Example Sentences:
If I won the lottery, I would buy a house in Barbados.
If I were you, I would stop poking the cat.
Continuous form:
If I spoke French, I would be living in Paris.
Third Conditional
Structure: Past perfect after "if"; would have + past participle in the main clause
Usage: Past situations that did not happen
Example Sentences:
If I had studied harder, I would have passed the exam.
If we had left earlier, we wouldn't have arrived late.
