welcome to moomoomath insights in this video I'd like to talk about the difference between boiling point and melting point the boiling point is the temperature in which a substance changes from a liquid into a gas take a look at this water boiling it has reached its boiling point the boiling point varies for different elements and substances and can be used as a physical property in order to help identify the substance for example water and rubbing alcohol look similar but water has a boiling point of 212 degrees Fahrenheit which is a hundred degrees Celsius and rubbing alcohol is a boiling point of 180 point seven degrees Fahrenheit which is eighty two point six degrees Fahrenheit the elements on the periodic table also vary according to their boiling point helium has the lowest at - 450 2.1 degrees Fahrenheit which is minus 269 Celsius and tungsten has the highest at ten thousand and thirty degrees Fahrenheit which is five thousand six hundred and sixty degrees Celsius boiling point also varies according to your elevation it is higher at sea level and decreases as you gain elevation as a result the standard boiling point has been defined as the temperature at which boiling occurs under a pressure of 1 bar which is a fancy way of saying the standard boiling point is the boiling point at sea level on the other hand melting point is the temperature in which a substance changes from a solid to a liquid for example this snow melting is an example of water reaching its melting point the melting point is also impacted by atmospheric pressure but not as much as boiling point does melting point also is a physical property and can be used to identify substances the melting point of water is 32 point excuse me is 32 degrees Fahrenheit which is zero degrees Celsius helium has the lowest melting point at minus two 70 degrees Celsius and carbon has the highest at 3,500 degrees Celsius compare this to steel which has a melting point of one thousand five hundred and ten degrees Celsius so there we go the difference between boiling point which is from a liquid to a vapor and melting point which is from a solid to a liquid thanks for watching and moomoomath uploads a new math and science video every day please subscribe and share [Music]
