Definition of Caption

  • Cambridge Dictionary definition: A short piece of text under a picture that describes or explains the picture.
  • Captions can illustrate or describe images, tables, diagrams, or charts.

Social Function of Captions

  • Helps readers/viewers understand information that may not be present in the visual.

Generic Structure of Captions

  • Components:
    • Title
    • Lead
    • Section Heading

Language Features of Captions

  1. Exclamations: Express strong emotions (surprise, excitement, etc.).
  2. Questions: Engage the reader (e.g., "Have you ever visited this place?").
  3. Adjective Phrases: Enhance descriptions (e.g., "wonderful view", "challenging sport").
  4. Prepositional Phrases: Provide context (e.g., "at the beach", "in the evening").
  5. Use present tense in the first sentence.
  6. Captions should be written in complete sentences.
  7. Clearly identify the people and location.
  8. Identify subjects from left to right.

Types of Captions

  1. Identification Bar:

    • Mentions only the subject in the picture.
    • Example: "Mark Zuckerberg, CEO and founder of Facebook."
  2. Cut Line:

    • Includes the subject and their activity.
    • Example: "Lakshmi Shari di Nafi Suargana crowned Putri Indonesia 2022."
  3. Summary:

    • Provides full explanation (who, what, where, when, why).
    • Example questions:
      • Who are they? (Lion Air passengers)
      • What happened? (Claiming ticket money back)
      • Where? (Sukarno Hatta Airport)
      • When? (February 20, 2021)
      • Why? (Flights delayed)
  4. Expanded Caption:

    • Similar to summary but longer, includes how the event occurred and quotes.
  5. Quote:

    • Consists of someone's words related to the picture.
    • Example: Thomas Edison quote - "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine percent perspiration."
    • Additional examples of quotes about balance and journeys.
  6. Group Identification:

    • Identifies more than one subject in a picture.
    • Example: "Belgian royal couple King Philip and Queen Matilda at Dutch Mahal in Agra."
