hi there and welcome along to my all new top 20 most recommended David Austin Roses for 2024 for the first time ever I've given climbing and rambling roses their own personal subsection with their own top 20 if this is a subject that interests you make sure that you head to my Instagram story highlights my YouTube channel or my Tik Tok to watch the video at your leisure if I've influenced you in purchasing any roses make sure that you're using the hashtag it's Ben's fault to to make sure that I can see your posts next to me are the top 20 roses that have been selected for this year's collection two of which are brand new entries smashing right into the top five this has made it really very difficult to make sure that I place these roses correctly and I've had to pay very close attention to not only their flowering their form their color their fragrance their disease resistance but also very much how the rose makes me feel unfortunately it does mean that special attention needs to be paid to two unbelievably good David Austin Roses which have now just because these two new entries have ented the top 20 have had to leave the top 20 and are no longer in this ranking so special notes need to be made to Red doll which is a great Rose for shade and to the lady Gardener which is a really good rose for cutting without any further Ado let's get into the top 20 and at number 20 is Olivia Rose Austin this is a fabulous pink rose producing huge amounts of flowers all all the way through the summer months large disc and cuplike flowers open almost completely flat they're produced freely all the way through the summer months from June often into the back end of September and October this particular variety also if left Undead headed will also produce really good hips so that's Olivia Rose Austin at number 20 at number 19 is a double entry for Q Gardens and tottering by gently these two single flowered roses are really really very pretty and offer a wonderful break from an awful lot of the flounce and frill and heavy colors that you see with an awful lot of other Roses Single little disc likee flowers with beautiful collections of golden stamms right in the center of the flower both of these roses enjoy unbelievable disease resistance and actually produce fantastic hips come the end of the season so this is tottering by gently and Q Gardens holding the joint number 19 spot at number 18 is the absolutely stunning moleno this particular Rose is actually not the perfect um uh uh um form of this particular Rose normally the flowers are much much larger but I wanted during this collection to bring you as many blooms as possible so this one is moleno this one has the ability to produce flowers on large upright strong stems bearing them towards the sky so for those of you that are interested in roses that hold their heads up up towards the the sun moleno is a really good one for this the color is absolutely resplendant and simply glows from this plant normally a rich dark golden it also has pigments of apricot and Peach flet through it so at number 18 is molo meaning the number 17 Rose is James L Austin now this particular Rose is currently out of flower but this forms a really large and very very distinctive shaped uh shrub very large and wide holding its blooms upwards Towards the Sky in a shelf-like appearance a great Rose for a statement piece or planting on mass I have mine planted at the back of the border and I particularly like this uh characteristics of its lovely burnt red and burgundy growth tips so number 17 down three places for 2024 is James L Austin the next Rose is number 16 which is tranquility one of the best pure white roses that David Austin have read this produces large dislike white blooms all the way through the summer months often one of the first roses in flower in the garden this particular Rose will also be one of the last roses in flower as well a really large and substantial shrub reaching around 5 ft by 5T it really is quite Splendid so at number 16 is tranquility moving on to number 15 is another white rose also available to be grown as a climber this one is Claire Austin now this one also appears on my best for climbing and rambling roses collection but this one can also be grown as a substantial Standalone shrub on a pill up post or Obelisk depending on how you decide to prune it producing masses and masses of pure Ivory cream flowers which are really really deeply CED this particular one has a really very strong mirth fragrance some people don't like it but with me it's very very lovely it carries beautifully on the Summer Wind this particular Rose is one of the Las in flower in the garden often still producing flowers right into the very very beginning of December so CLA Austin takes the number 15 spot in at number 14 is the hardworking and always present Princess Anne this particular Rose has been in my top 20 most recommended roses for five years straight this is an absolutely fabulous Rose and please don't let the fact that this doesn't have a great deal of fragrance put you off this particular Rose is always one of the first in flower in very very late may it will March all the way through the season with wave after wave of wave of flowers in this wonderful soft magenta pink this particular Rose also has a characteristic now being picked up on on one or two of the later editions where the flowers actually fade in the most beautiful way it makes makes it quite difficult to decide when to dead head this one cuz realistically you should dead head a rose as soon as the flowers start to fade and the petals start to drop however princess an goes this wonderful platinum silver gray color just as The Petal start to drop and it's really difficult to decide when to take the bloom but this one at number 14 down at two places for this year is Princess Anne which means at number 13 we have a form number one ranking most recommended Rose from David Austin Roses the ever wonderful lady Emma Hamilton now this took my number one spot in 2020 and 2021 my opinions of this Rose have not changed it is one of the first full package roses from David Austin Roses not only bringing together wonderful foliage color with this lovely bronzed foliage a wonderful color and fragrance combination and also the ability to produce hundreds and hundreds of flowers one of the nicest quality about lady Emma Hamilton is the fact that she doesn't really find her feet in the garden until about the end of June maybe even to beginning of July when most of the Roses have already had their first flush lady Emma Hamilton is only starting her first so which means she marches all the way through into October and November and once again after the wonderful flowers and the incredible fragrance you have a really very very nice collection of hips this particular Rose does best in partial shade and gets quite large up to around 5 and 1/2 sometimes on to 6t I'd make sure you give this one some support because it flowers in such volumes that this one does actually get a little bit floppy I use a series of s pins around mine just to give it a little bit of help but here this one is the lady Emma Hamilton at number 13 which is a format number one most recommended Rose which moves us on to number 12 which is another really lovely rose this one is Crown Princess margarita a very very useful Rose from David Austin Roses which can either be grown as I do as a large Standalone informal shrub with long arching and very very graceful stems or as a short climber absolutely perfect for growing up a fence panel or maybe up the sides of a rose Arch or Arbor Crown Princess Margarita reaches around 5 and 1/2 to 7 ft and produces Huges amounts of these beautiful deeply cued apricot blooms which are really really very fragrant abs Ely fantastic for cutting and bringing into the house this particular Rose also does very well in partial shade only receiving 3 or 4 hours of direct sunlight per day so this one at number 12 is Crown Princess Margarita which means number 11 is a rose that also appears on my vesal climbing collection officially a shrub rose this one is Mill On The Floss you can see each flower here looking like it's been hand painted with this lovely dark pink edging and very lovely flushed edges inside the flower this one is quite large and quite informal mine is already towering up to about 10 or 11 ft and I've given it an obelisk for the first time this year and it's really increased its flowering capabilities much like the lady Emma Hamilton a couple of places before it this particular Rose does really well towards the back end of the season although mine this year has flowered from very very early on it's still dripping with flowers so here at number 11 is M On The Floss which brings us to the halfway point and the number 10 most recommended Rose this one is septed aisle an absolutely fabulous Rose also producing wonderful hips towards the back end of the season you can see it has these wonderful large open semi- double flowers with this resplendent collection of glowing stams right in the very very center septed aisle gets quite large again reaching around 5 to 5 1/2 ft tall it's an absolute Powerhouse of flowers you can see they're absolutely dripping on this these couple of stems now and it's been in flower all the way through the season it's loose and open form means it stands up to the British weather really well so if we have a particularly wet summer like we have had during 2024 this is one of the Roses that that stands up to those kind of weather conditions really really well septad has been in my top 20 for 5 years consecutively and is one of the only non- movers in this year's collection at number 10 which means at number nine we're down to uh a new entry for last year this one is Elizabeth not fully open in flower once again this one last uh named after our late Queen Elizabeth II is a really really lovely flower having lots and lots of tones of pink Peach and apricot running through the flower it opens completely flat with a really really lovely uh cananim like button eye in the very center lots of yellow and apricot Stripes through the buds it's a really healthy very vigorous variety which I've also chosen to give a little bit of support a basic Wigwam just to tie the canes into to stop them FL flopping about too much this one is Elizabeth this is my number nine Rose climbing two places this year which means at number eight sliding down the rankings ever so slightly and dropping four places is hide Hall fully reviewed by myself only last year this one stormed into the very very top of the top 20 I think ranking about four or five last year this one hasn't has done really well again this season its repeat is incredibly strong you can see the repeat coming before the flowers have even faded it's the loose form on this particular rose that I really love this lovely aott and yellow streaking to the insides of the petals and it's l loose and open form meaning it's really really really uh enticing for pollinators like holer flies and bees in the garden an absolutely indestructible Rose if you're a little bit lazy if you're not great with your watering if you're planting it in a particularly challenging location maybe the soil is poor or it's particularly dry under the shade of maybe of a of a of a hedge or a shed or a fence or something hide Hall will perform really really well so this is hide Hall at number eight my most recommended seven Place goes to Two Roses which are here this one is a hollow car named after the rhs um Garden this is a stunning buttoned Rose producing flowers around 2 to 2 and 1 half inches across they're dislike and they open completely flat with this lovely frilly Edge to it an incredibly spiky Rose but also a rose that's very very Hardy this will takeen all manner of different situations in the garden whether it's dry whether it's wet whether it's exposed this is one of the few roses in the collection which will actually stand up to a salt driven wind so if you're dra if you're growing on an exposed site or a hillside this is a really really good froze for you however the blooms if they do get wet do tend to go a little bit mushy and it's sometimes best just to dead head them if you've had a huge belt of inclement weather but at number seven is har car lining up along side taking the joint seventh place is its Sister Rose the country Parson sherbet yellow in color it produces flowers ever so slightly larger than hoc car around two and a half coming on to three maybe three and a half inches across and once again incredibly spiky but the fragrance on these two roses is absolutely exceptional absolutely filling the local air around the plant with wonderful wonderful fragrance these are both very very disease resistant and Hardy roses I grow uh the country Parson and harow car in quite large quantities using them as backing roses and mixed borders where I plant four or five in a border just to bring the whole border together as a really nice condusive planting scheme so jaking joint place at number seven is harow car and it Sister Rose the yellow one which is the country Parson the number six spot goes to a rose that used to hold a format number one position this is stus mana and once again a rose that really only comes into its own towards the back end of the season it's the bronzed foliage the disease resistance the fragrance on this particular Rose which sets it apart from everybody else another one of David Austin Rose's complete package roses bringing together stem color foliage color flowers and fragrance all together with disease resistance this is an utterly fabulous Rose which we really must plant mine reaches in excess of 5 ft and does take a little bit of support you can see that on these SE here about seven or eight buds all of which will measure around 3 and 1/2 coming on to 4 and 1/2 inches across when they actually get round to opening so it does produce really quite large flowers the fragrance really has to be smelt to be um to be described it really is exceptional so here is silus Mana at number six a former number one rose for myself right we're down to the top five now holding on to its number five spot and a non mover is the absolutely stunning estasia I a really really useful Rose it's incredibly pretty that once again has these multi tones in the flowers everything from light and true pink Rippling through to the apricots the lemons and the yellows and the peaches which make it really really lovely a very disease resistant Rose reaching about 3 and 1 half to 4 ft so it's absolutely ideal to plant in a pot maybe next to your front or back door where you can enjoy these large flowers which are actually perfect for cutting they hold themselves up really beautifully on very very strong stems so a non-mover at number five is a Stace of VI in at number four is a brand new entry launched in 2023 taking the number four spot is Penelope Lively a really beautiful combination Rose from David Austin Roses with dark emerald green foliage and these absolutely stunning pink flowers which look like they've been hand painted the fragrance on this particular particular Rose is absolutely exceptional and not placing this higher in the top 20 has been a really really very difficult decision indeed this is a fabulous addition to the collections from David Austin Roses very disease resistant producing four sometimes even five uh wavves of flowers across the season this particular Rose is absolutely stunning fully reviewed by myself after my first impressions last year this had its full personal review during 2024 and storms TW straight into my number four spots so this is Penelope Lively at number three down just one place is Gabriel Oak this particular Rose is very very difficult to describe producing very very vibrant magenta pink flowers which once again such along with other flowers like Penelope Lively um young lucidus and Princess Han have this wonderful bleaching color to them starting incredibly vibrant colors like a raspberry pink it slowly Fades out with gray and platinum Hues taking to the flower another one of David Austin's complete package roses that bring together form color fragrance and disease resistance even the stems have a wonderful color the fragrance on this one smelling of Summer fruits blackberries and apples it really is incredibly intoxicating this is Gabriel Oak at number three meaning we're down to the last last two roses deciding between these two roses this year has been incredibly difficult and I have to confess this has now come down to how the rose makes me feel so taking my number two spot is a brand new entry from David Austin Roses launched in 2023 it's Donahue this is a absolutely wonderful Rose if you're growing in a challenging spot in the garden maybe in deep shade on a North or east uh facing aspect we have challenging light levels Donahue has the ability to flower in huge amounts All Summer Long producing wave after wave after wave of flower they absolutely stunning L deep apricot when they open fading to a very very heavy coffee cream just before they fade even when the petals fade leaving this lovely collection of gold and stamms that look like a sea urchin behind them but it's the ability to flower in deep shade and in huge quantities on a shrub reaching excess of 4 and 1/2 coming on to 5 ft which makes Donahue a really really good addition to your garden I have mine growing in a large pot uh which is absolutely fabulous and it is flowered and flowered and flowed sending up cane after cane the bush also completely changes color as the new flush comes forward taking on a complete bronzed and red look just before flowering which means we come to the number one spot and for the second year in a row it goes to the absolutely amazing bring me sunshine this is the second year this wonderful Rose has held the number one spot with myself again a high performing variety producing these wonderful Rich deeply CED golden flumes which are absolutely packed for of fragrance the decision to rank Donna Hue at number two and and uh bring me Sunshine at number one really has come down to not disease resistance F fra um disease resistance or fragrance or form but realistically just how bring me sunshine fills my heart with such joy and the fact that it just makes me so happy it has all of the romance all of the opulence and all of the Just all of the all of the qualities that you want in an English Rose large blooms loads and loads of petals packed full of fragrance great disease resistance and vigor my plants are getting larger and larger in their small pots now towering up to around 8 coming on to 9 ft tall going to lift them out of their pots over the 2024 2025 winter season and I'm going to try planting them in the ground and fan training them as climbers because this particular variety is absolutely captivating so for the second time in a row taking the number one spot for 2024 is the absolutely amazing bring me Sunshine don't forget all of these fabulous roses behind me have their own individual personal Rose reviews
