now to the Retro technology hitting gen Z and Millennials that might help improve your mental health flip phones are hot right now Becky Worley joins us with the potential benefits of using one good morning Becky so oh you got one good morning yeah good morning from the 90s Robin on smartphone detox it's using one of these college kids are praising them online Millennials and gen Z professionals they're trying them out making flip phones the ultimate statement on Mental Health the HBO series hacks shows a millennial in search of a new phone so like an upgrade no downgrade I just need a phone that doesn't have access to email internet social media just like a dumb phone basically like a brick like a flip phone it's a new way to unplug from smartphones and make life simpler and it's trending big time this college student shared online how she switched to a flip phone part-time we realized that every single problem that we have on a night out everything that leads to us crying everything that leads to us having a bad time stems from our phone this new trend really shows that gen Z understands the impact Technology's having on their lives they know that having grown up in this time of smartphones and social media hasn't been good for their mental health Fila arifi a 23 year old BuzzFeed news reporter experimented with a week on a flip phone I think I wanted to gain I guess a sense of just being more connected with my friends and family and then I also just wanted to cut down on screen time Osama Katana went 30 days on a flip the first 20 hours switching to flip phone were super super tough you really don't realize just how much you use our iPhone Viola had similar withdrawal I EX experienced a lot of fomo during my first 24 hours on my flip phone but then the subtle upsides kicked in yeah I felt like all the things that I was putting aside for a very long time I had the ability to do once I got rid of my phone I definitely read a lot more books it felt like my day was more boring because I had less like superficial dopamine to fill it with but that was like overwhelmingly trumped by like this idea of peace and quiet I didn't feel that I didn't feel the urge to constantly like drench my brain in in stimulation so as Jen Millennials rebel against Tech will flip phones overtake smartphone sales anytime soon I doubt it but Fuel and Osama say they do plan to go back and forth between both to manage screen time I still do need to use my iPhone from time to time for like emergency situations or something like that but for the rest of it yeah I'll be using this flip phone almost entirely mainly so that I can shut on people like that shutting the clamshell of the flip phone is so weirdly satisfying but the reality is most of us are sticking with our smartphones the incredible researcher in the piece Gene twang says it best we need to make sure that smartphones are a tool that we use not a tool that uses us yes well well said we all love that we all when you did the snap we were all relating going back to the 90s with that hey Becky you say you have a trick that helps keep you from Doom scrolling yeah you know and just picking up my phone mindlessly so I've made a lock screen that has a prompt I mine says put your phone down or be still and it has really helped and made me feel less frazzled and if it doesn't there you go as always Becky appreciate it well hey there GMA fans Robin Roberts here thanks for checking out our YouTube channel lots of great stuff here so go on click the Subscribe button right over right over here to get more of Awesome videos and content from GMA every day anytime we thank you for watching and we'll see you in the morning on GMA
