hi everybody and welcome to this video which covers the Clive wearing case study as part of the cognitive psychology topic for stage one psychology let's get started so Clive wearing is commonly referred to as the man with the 302 memory due to the Amnesia that he suffers after a brain infection that he contracted over 35 years ago and remember Amnesia is the professional term for forgetting so prior to his illness wearing was an accomplished musician living in London with his wife Deborah he worked for the BBC uh created musical scores for the London Opera Center was a very successful um musician in that respect but in 1985 uh wearing contracted a form of menitis which is an infection of the meninges which is the thin layer of tissue that surround the brain so this disease is often fatal when left untreated because neurons are harmed by both the infection and the inflammation that it causes so some sufferers of the disease recover completely without any ongoing symptoms but in more severe cases like in Clive's case unfortunately it caused long-term brain damage or it can cause long-term brain damage as it did for Clive so due to the attack on the central nervous system wearing was left unable to store new memories so he also struggled to regulate his emotions and often exhibited unstable moods so much of the damage caused by by the entis occurred to the hippocampus which we know is a structure that is vital in processing shortterm memories into long-term memories so it's a structure in the temporal lobe responsible for the formation of long-term memories and storage so because of this he suffers from Total Amnesia rendering him incapable of forming new memories so wearing short-term memory lasts between 7 and 30 seconds and he spends his day believing that he has just woken up as cannot remember what he has done prior to that moment in time so he believes that he has just come out of the coma that was as a result of his intis constantly asking why he has not seen a doctor to assist with his condition so just one year before suffering from intis uh Clive married his wife Deborah he has children from a previous marriage but cannot remember their names nor the details of their lives so his love for Deborah is obvious as each time she walks into a room wearing believes he is seeing her for the first time and greets her with the joy and passion of a man desperately missing his lover after a long period of time so despite having no memory of his time as a musician or composer and no longer being able to identify pieces of music wearing is still able to play the piano as well as site read music so it appears that his procedural memory is not as effective at his as his episodic memory so I hope you found this video useful as always if you've got any questions feel free to let me know otherwise Happy revising
