Anatomy Regional Terms

Overview

  • Two major body regions:
    • Axial region: head, neck, trunk
    • Appendicular region: upper and lower limbs

Axial Region

Head Regions

  • Cephalic: Entire head region
    • Memorize by noting the ability to "see and lick" using parts of the head
  • Cranial: Skull
    • "Cranial" rhymes with "branial" (brain)
  • Frontal: Forehead
    • Fore = front of the head
  • Ocular: Eyes
    • Use "binoculars" for vision
  • Otic: Ears
    • "Otoscope" used to inspect ears
  • Nasal: Nose
    • Nasal spray usage
  • Buccal: Cheeks
    • Medication administered via "buccal route"
  • Oral: Mouth
  • Mental: Chin
    • "Men's chin" mnemonic
  • Occipital: Back of the skull

Neck Region

  • Cervical: Neck
    • Includes "cervical vertebrae"

Trunk Regions

  • Thoracic: Between neck and abdomen
    • Remember "insect thorax"
  • Axillary: Armpit
    • "Ax deodorant" for "axillary"
  • Mammary: Breast
    • "Memory glands"
  • Sternal: Sternum
    • Resembles a necktie
  • Abdominal: Abdomen
    • Known for "abs"; can be divided into quadrants or regions
  • Umbilical: Navel/Belly button
  • Pelvic: Hip bones
    • "Elvis pelvis"
  • Inguinal: Groin
    • Inguinal hernias
  • Pubic: Genitalia
  • Perineal: Between genitals and anus
    • "Pericare" in nursing

Posterior Trunk Regions

  • Dorsal: Back
    • "Dorsal fin"
  • Vertebral: Along the spine
  • Lumbar: Lower back
    • "Lumbar support"
  • Sacral: Lower back, sacrum area
    • "Soul in sacrum"
  • Gluteal: Buttocks
    • "Glutes"

Appendicular Region

Upper Limb

  • Acromial: Shoulder
  • Brachial: Arm
    • Muscles: biceps brachii, triceps brachii
  • Antecubital: Front of elbow
    • "AC" in nursing
  • Olecranal: Back of elbow
    • "Olecranal bump"
  • Antebrachial: Forearm
    • Distinction from "arm"
  • Carpal: Wrist
    • "Carpals drive a car"
  • Manual: Hand
  • Metacarpal: Beyond wrist
  • Palmar: Palm
  • Pollex: Thumb

Lower Limb

  • Coxal: Hip
    • "Cowboy coxal"
  • Femoral: Thigh
    • "Femur bone, femoral artery"
  • Patellar: Front of knee
    • "Patella"
  • Popliteal: Back of knee
  • Crural: Leg (knee to ankle)
  • Sural: Calf
  • Pedal: Foot
    • "Pedal a bike"
  • Calcaneal: Heel
    • "Callus heel"
  • Tarsal: Ankle
  • Metatarsal: Beyond tarsals
  • Hallux: Big toe
    • "Walk down the hall"
  • Digital: Toes
  • Plantar: Sole of foot

Conclusion

  • Regional terms help in identifying specific areas for anatomical study.
  • Practice by taking quizzes and watching anatomy video playlists.
