IGCSE First Language English Exam Tips

Paper 1: Reading Paper

Question 1: Comprehension and Summary

  • Comprehension Task
    • Short answer questions based on Passage A.
    • Requires specific answers, must use own words when instructed.
  • Summary Task
    • Based on Text B.
    • Word limit: 120 words — be concise and factual.
    • Arrange points logically, group similar ideas, no longer requires bullet points.
    • Highlight different points using various colors to organize information.

Question 2: Short Answer and Language Analysis

  • Short Answer Questions
    • Focus on specific wording, find synonyms from the text.
  • Language Analysis
    • Analyze two paragraphs; use introductory sentence.
    • Select 3 powerful phrases; explain literal meaning and effect.
    • Keep answers concise (1-2 sentences per phrase).
    • Timing is crucial.

Directed Writing

  • Based on Text C; same text from previous questions.
  • Use three colored highlighters for referencing bullet points.
