CNA Bed Bath Procedure for Mrs. Smith

Introduction

  • CNA Introduction: Xavier introduces himself as the CNA for the day.
  • Patient Confirmation: Confirms he is addressing Mrs. Smith and checks her name band.
  • Consent & Communication: Asks Mrs. Smith for consent to proceed with the bed bath.

Preparation

  • Supplies Gathering: Indicates gathering necessary supplies for the bed bath.
  • Privacy: Closes the curtains for privacy.
  • Hand Hygiene: Washes hands before collecting supplies and starting the procedure.

Procedure

  • Bed Adjustment: Raises bed to comfortable height and lowers side rail.
  • Gloves: Puts on gloves before starting the bath.
  • Gown Removal: Removes Mrs. Smith's gown carefully.
  • Water Temperature Check: Ensures water is safe and comfortable for Mrs. Smith.
  • Towel Placement: Places towels under Mrs. Smith’s head and arm.

Washing Process

  • Eye Cleaning:
    • No soap used.
    • Cleans eye farthest away first, from inner canthus outward using clean corners of washcloth.
    • Repeats for the closest eye and face.
  • Arm Cleaning:
    • Exposes only the area being washed.
    • Uses different corners of washcloth for different sections:
      • Fingers, fingernails, hands
      • Top of arm
      • Bottom of arm
      • Armpit
  • Rinsing Process:
    • Uses a clean washcloth to rinse areas in the same order and method as washing.

Drying Process

  • Pat Dry: Utilizes a towel to pat dry the arm, following the same order as washing.
  • Towel Removal: Removes towels from under the head and arm.

Concluding the Procedure

  • Gown Replacement: Puts a fresh gown on Mrs. Smith.
  • Bed and Rails Adjustment: Raises side rail, lowers bed to lowest position.
  • Basin Care: Empties, rinses, and dries the basin, placing it in the designated dirty supply area.
  • Linen Disposal: Disposes of used linen properly, avoiding contact with clothing.
  • Glove Removal & Hand Hygiene: Removes gloves and sanitizes hands.

Closing

  • Patient Comfort: Ensures Mrs. Smith has her call light, phone, tissue, water, and magazines within reach.
  • Final Steps: Opens curtains, washes hands, steps outside, and records the procedure.
