Ventilator Setup and Use: Puritan Bennett 980

Introduction

  • Purpose: How to properly set up, perform a short self-test (SST), and initiate ventilation on a patient using the Puritan Bennett 980 Ventilator.

Equipment Needed

  • RT380 Package
    • Dual heated inspiratory and expiratory limbs
    • Humidifier canister
    • Inspiratory filter
  • Additional Items
    • Puritan Bennett 980 specific expiratory filter
    • Heater humidifier cables

Initial Setup

  1. Connect Essentials
    • Power cable
    • Air source
    • Oxygen source
  2. Install Components
    • Expiratory Filter: Place inside the port and close.
    • Humidifier Canister: Slide into the heater.
    • Inspiratory Filter: Attach the thick side to the ventilator.
  3. Tubing and Connections
    • Connect blue tubing to the humidifier.
    • Attach circuits to appropriate humidifier and filter ports.
    • Wear gloves (recommended).
  4. Heater Humidifier Cables
    • Blue Cable: Connect the single prong end to the circuit.
    • Yellow Cable: Connect appropriately on the heater side.

Performing the Short Self-Test (SST)

  1. Preparation
    • Remove the blue cap from the circuit.
    • Power on the ventilator.
  2. SST Menu
    • Select the SST option.
    • Choose "Run all SST".
    • Set up for the type of patient, usually adult in ICU.
  3. Test Steps
    • Initial circuit setup without humidifier.
    • Block the Y-piece as instructed.
    • Reconnect and disconnect as per on-screen guidance.
    • Check for leaks, especially around the humidifier and IV line.

Initiating Ventilation

  1. Preparation
    • Attach Aerogen if patient is expected.
    • Set up suction catheter and end tidal CO2 monitor.
  2. Patient Settings
    • Select "New Patient".
    • Input predicted body weight (optional).
    • Choose settings: Assist Control, Volume Control, etc.
    • Confirm settings and be ready to connect to a patient.

ET Tube and Hollister Setup

  1. ET Tube Placement
    • Align Hollister over the upper lip, stick to cheeks.
    • Secure with Velcro strap around the head.
  2. Bite Block Placement
    • Place between teeth and secure with a zip tie.
    • Ensure pilot tube is not compressed.
  3. Pressure Check
    • Use a manometer to check cuff pressure.

Final Steps

  • Confirm readiness for patient attachment.
  • Ensure all monitors and settings are correct.
  • Remember to turn off the ventilator before storage.
