hello welcome back so in the last episode we looked at doing character arcs and fleshing out those characters today we're going to look at building the world so we know what the characters are but let's really look at where they inhabit let's get started [Music] so with world building we're actually going to look at the type of environment in which the story takes place we're not we're writing a ghost story we know the type of people that are there and by generating knowledge we understand that this is Gothic romance that it's kind of Victorian times I'm thinking about 1890 but we need to start thinking a little bit about what that environment is and how do people be here with it and to do that we just got to find some images now I went off to just Google let's go back to the writing studio and I searched for actually the first thing was a steam train and I picked one out in advance 701 I actually found one that I thought looked really nice all right well really nice but it looks like it could be a ghost train which is the most important thing is called er7 or one so if I copy that image and here at the bottom of our logs I'll just paste it in what we call it the arc so one can we call it the obsidian which is quite a coarsely nodding man so now we know what we're looking at what I want to do beyond that actually there was a something I realized is in the last episode we were talking about the Robert might dynamite this train I thought where why on earth would you find dynamite in Victorian London or Victorian England was it even available so I went back let's just take this one in so the search engine where do you buy dynamite what a time to be alive we can just type this in it appears in Victorian times and what I found was I've actually found a book it's called death dynamite and disaster a grisly British railway history and it's written by a lady called Rosa Mathison and it's a it's a history I thought that was remarkable that somebody's actually written a book on this and if I just jump through so one of the things that we found that I that I discovered as I looked at this is that dynamite was being used a lot for the creation of the underground which began in 1950s but the the became this group called The Fear nians were kind of the Irish Brotherhood so it started to use dynamite first of all for criminal reasons from what I've just scanned and there was this black market between the people who were bringing in the modern age the the engineers look at the construction guys who were building the underground were selling dynamite soar in a world where dynamite can be bought on the black market we have this ghost train but isn't that it's not rather remarkable that there's this background so as we were 1890s it was possible to buy dynamite on the black market from people constructing the London Underground and as I say a lot of it went to the failures but that's a really interesting a really interesting discovery that there was this backdrop of the the softer the beginnings of terrorism there's a wonderful little course found in this in this book from just what I scanned there was talking there was a August spies the editor of an anarchist newspaper in Chicago put it into words a pound of dynamite is worth a bushel of bullets whilst the dynamite monthly we believe this there was a magazine called the dynamite monthly based in New York who saw reason d'etre a reason to be was the promotion of uses of animate proclaimed it not only to be the hope of the oppressed but their salvation oh I must that's remarkable in a world where there's black market dynamite that's going to save oppressed groups ah what the time to be alive that must have been so let's sort of think about what what this place would have looked like so actually I know what I look for next I want to see just our heroine is a schoolteacher so we've got Victorian teachers and we'll put that in we have a look at the at the images there is a nice teacher to copy that one so we have a little bit of a dresser it's variant each's we can bring that one off so we can start see what these people look like we can see that clothing we know their trains in order to live in a world where they're building the underground we know a place where you can buy dynamite on the black market now I did think of something else one of the key politicians of that time was learn Gladstone I remember he's quite a striking chap so if we type it in and have a look at the images of him yes he's just what we're looking for let's have a look at Gladstone so we'll copy this image and I'm thinking that Gladstone looks like the engineer the designer of the trend so let's see if we can shorten this one down I'll paste him in make it light enough to say look at that that's our JW Isambard that's the creator of the Obsidian and he looks like a scary guy who would make a ghost train he's scary looking that's a look and there was another chap away there was puzzle jet panels yeah Joseph puzzle jet he was the engineer so if it who created the sewer system in the Victorian times there's the same Luckett better copy this image because Lazlo jet had fantastic mustache that's hello here we go so fine bit of facial hair you can almost sense that we relate veering towards steampunk when you look at that and what else will the Victorian times the Omnibus the the horse-drawn cart was my omnibus what is the horse-drawn from there's a great image let me get this one so this is our time this way when you go to buy your dynamite you get there on a horse-drawn tram you know I think I said I think that's a pretty good place so this kind of gives us some ideas good store yeah we've got our school teachers but most importantly we've got a train we know what this thing looks like so I'm going to go away and think about this for a little bit more and see what ideas it starts to come out now because it's going to this is going to kind of recharge my creative juices because now I'm going to think about it and look at these images and say you know what this guy looks like he could be doing I'm going to learn a little bit more about black market dynamite and things like that so I'm going to leave it there in the next episode what we'll do is we'll take a lot of these ideas and try and bring them together because it's a little bit piecemeal at the moment there's going to be a lot of holes in the plot that we haven't identified yet so the only way we can do that is to write out the story as a as a narrative and then look to discover where the plot holes on and start to film so we'll do that next time until then keep writing along keep writing your notes and we'll see you real soon you [Music]
