Exploring Pop Music with Rosé

[Music] Don't you want me like I want you? Baby, don't you need me like I need you now? See tomorrow, but tonight go crazy. All you got to do is kiss me at [Music] the Man, this global hit has been impossible to escape lately. I mean, it really has all the ingredients of the perfect pop song. It's catchy, which means that it's easy to remember, and it sticks in your head. And it's upbeat, meaning that it has a lively and positive rhythm. And it's fantastic to dance to. So, if you stick around until the end, you're going to learn a ton more everyday advanced English expressions and pronunciation with three interviews from K-pop star Rosé. And to give you the best possible experience, we're saving all the most important everyday expressions like global hit, catchy, and upbeat that we've just seen over on the Real Life English app so that you can remember them forever. And you can get access to this lesson right now for free by clicking the link down in the description below. But I'll be telling you more about that in just a little bit. So to start off today's lesson, we're going to watch a clip from an interview where Ros tells Jordan North, a British radio presenter, about the meaning behind her song, Apata. It's really just for like it's kind of fun, the funsies. Uh I was like at the studio, we were just we're all drinking Diet Coke over hamburgers and then I was like, I'll teach you guys Korean drinking games. And then but I like I caught on to it cuz all these they're not Korean and they're just all Americans and they were like ah they were like what is this? This is crazy. And I was like wow you guys are really loving this. And so I said it as a joke we should make a song and jokingly we made the song and that's what our is right now. So you did it from just playing around. Yeah. Doing this game. Doing the game and now it's come a worldwide hit. Yeah. I mean, Bruno jumped on it, so I mean, he helped a lot. So, if you have a keen ear, you might have noticed that Jordan has a rather strong Northern English accent. Now, compare that to Ros's accent, which actually has roots from Australian English, as she grew up in Melbourne, or Melbourne, as they like to say there. It's really just for like it's kind of fun. The funsies. So, let's kick off the lesson with some creative Aussie slang. Funs is just a cute way to say fun. For example, you and your friends might have a spontaneous danceoff in the living room just for fun or just for funsies. We're all drinking Diet Coke over hamburgers. And then when she says they were drinking Diet Coke over hamburgers. What do you think over means in this context? Before eating hamburgers. After eating hamburgers. While eating [Music] hamburgers. The phrase over hamburgers means while eating hamburgers. For example, you can chat over coffee, meaning you chat while drinking coffee. And by the way, if you're new here, every single week we make fun lessons like this one with your favorite series, movies, and celebrities to help you understand fast-speaking natives like Ros without getting lost, without missing the jokes, and without subtitles. So, just hit that subscribe button and the bell down below to join over 10 million learners around the world who are doing exactly this. And that way, you won't miss a single new lesson. It's really just for like it's kind of fun, the funsies. I was like at the studio. We were just we're all drinking Diet Coke over hamburgers. And then I was like, "I'll teach you guys Korean drinking games." And then but I like I caught on to it cuz all these they're not Korean and they're just all Americans and they were like, "Ah, pate." Like they were like, "What is this? This is crazy." Ah, pa. Have you ever played any drinking games? A popular drinking game in America I loved playing in college is beer pong. It's when you set up cups on a table and each team tries to toss ping pong balls into the other team's cups. If you land a ball in their cup, they have to drink it. It's super fun and it gets pretty competitive. But I like I caught on to it cuz all these they're not Korean and they're just all Americans and they were like, "Ah, they were like, "What is this? This is crazy." Ah, to catch on to something means to become aware of or realize something. So, Ros realized the rest of the guys in the room were Americans and didn't know the game's rules. But I like I caught on to it because all these they're not Korean and they're just all Americans and they were like ah they were like what is this? This is crazy. Ah. All right. So next there is a great example of connected speech which is how we natives cut and link our words together. Check out how she said this common question. What is this? What is this? It's crazy. The T sound stands between two vowels. And what usually happens in American and Australian English is that the T turns into a flap T, which sounds like a soft D. What is this? What is this? Listen again and repeat. What is this? This is crazy. What is this? They were like, what is this? This is crazy. And I was like, wow, you guys are really loving this. And so I said as a joke, we should make a song. And jokingly we made the song and that's what a is right now. So you did it from just playing around. Yeah. So as we understand from their conversation they were just playing around or in other words they were just having fun when they created that song. For example, the inventor of Velcro was just playing around with burrs a plant when he came up with the idea for disconnecting material. So you did it from just playing around. Yeah. Doing this game. doing the game. I know it's called a worldwide hit. Yeah. I mean, Bruno jumped on it, so I mean, he helped a lot. A worldwide hit is a song or movie that becomes very popular all over the world. So, the song Apeta went from a joke to something loved by fans all around the world. Remember jumping on a bed as a kid? That was so much fun. So, when you say somebody jumped on something like an idea, it means they got enthusiastic about it and supported it. When Bruno Mars heard the song, he quickly got involved and his support helped make it even more successful. You can actually hear this phrase in super popular hit from Bruno Mars, Uptown Funk. [Music] Now, I don't know about you, but I still have her song Apata stuck in my head. So, let's come back to the chorus and learn some connected speech with it. Remember that connected speech is how we natives cut, reduce, and link our words together when we speak. me like you, baby. So, did you notice how she sings these word combinations? Don't you, want you, need you? It's probably not how you would expect. First off, often times when we have a word ending in a t sound followed by a word that ends in a y sound like don't you or want you, the two sounds morph into a ch sound. Don't you becomes don't you. Want you becomes want you. Next, we encounter a similar pattern when a D sound is followed by a Y sound, but instead they morph into a J sound. So, need you becomes need you. Now, let's practice together by singing along. [Music] Call me like I want you. Baby, don't you need me like I need you now. All right, now that you know how to sing Apata just like Ros, let's learn a little bit more about her. In this next interview, Ros is asked about promoting her new album, Rosie. Promoting the album means advertising it by talking actively about it, doing interviews, social media posts, or anything else that spreads the word so that people will listen to it, buy it, or stream it. So, I was like, okay, I can give credit for myself cuz I think obviously it was not a smooth ride and it just showed how much, you know, time and effort and blood, sweat, and tears I actually did put into it. And that was the moment where I I I allowed myself to acknowledge the fact that I am really proud that I'm at the point of promoting it. And so it really means a lot to me apparently. Okay, I can give credit for myself cuz I think obviously it was not a smooth ride. And to give yourself credit is to recognize or appreciate your own hard work and effort. What do you mean? All this came from you. No, all this came from that. Give yourself some credit, please. Stark Tower is your baby. Give yourself 12% of credit. Obviously, it was not a smooth ride, and it just showed how much, you know, time and effort and blood, sweat, and tears I actually did put into it. And when you say that something wasn't a smooth ride, you mean that it wasn't easy. There were challenges, problems, and difficulties along the way. Obviously, it was not a smooth ride, and it just showed how much, you know, time and effort and blood, sweat, and tears I actually did put into it. And what do you think she means by blood, sweat, and [Music] tears? I love this expression. It's so visual, right? Ros probably didn't literally experience sweating, crying, or bleeding while creating her album, but it's a strong expression we can use to communicate a huge amount of effort being required. In fact, you could say that learning English to an advanced level takes a lot of blood, sweat, and tears. And on that note, earlier I promised you that I would be sharing with you something that would make your English learning journey a little bit easier. You know, I myself have learned six different languages during my life. And still to this day, one of the biggest barriers for me has to be my memory. It's really hard to remember all the new words and expressions that you encounter in another language. Right now, tools like an memorize have definitely helped me. If you've never heard of these, they use an innovative technology called spaced repetition, which works with your memory to remind you of a word or expression right as you'd be about to forget it. The thing is, I find that I'm always busy like creating these lessons for you guys. And having to put the new words and expressions I encounter in one of these tools with a clear definition, image, and maybe the pronunciation, it really takes a lot of time. Well, I have good news for you guys. We've already put together vocabulary flashcards for this lesson in the Real Life English app that use that same innovative space repetition technology as well as images, pronunciation, and writing exercises that you can use right now to help you never forget all these new words and expression. And you'll even be able to use them next time you get in a conversation. Wouldn't that be great? So give it a try right now for free by clicking the link down in the description below which will take you right to this lesson with Rosé. Obviously it was not a smooth ride and it just showed how much you know time and effort and blood set and tears I actually did put into it and that was the moment where I I I allowed myself to acknowledge the fact that I am really proud that I'm at the point of promoting it. To put into means to give something like time, effort, energy, or emotion to a task or project. You know, your father and I have noticed the effort you've put into this retest. What if I mess it up again? You won't. You're going to do great. We're really proud of you, honey. Obviously, it was not a smooth ride, and it just showed how much, you know, time and effort and blood, sweat, and tears I actually did put into it. And that was a moment where I I I allowed myself to acknowledge the fact that I am really proud that I'm at the point of promoting it. So, it really means a lot to me apparently. Let's say that you've been avoiding exercise for a while. Now, a friend might come and say, you know, you really should get back to working out. And you could respond, "Yeah, I acknowledge the fact that I haven't been taking as good care of my body as I should." You're accepting and recognizing that it's true. You haven't been working out. I I allowed myself to acknowledge the fact that I am really proud that I'm at the point of promoting it. So, it really means a lot to me. Apparently, she says it means a lot to her, meaning it's very important. In fact, it's really nice to use this when you ask someone to do you a favor. You could say it would mean a lot to me if you came to the party, for example. And it would mean a lot to me if you hit that like button and the subscribe down below because that's a free way that you can support our channel so we can continue bringing you lessons like this one. All right, you're doing a great job so far. So, in the last interview we're going to see, Ros explains to Shawn Evans about how she had to leave her beloved dog Hank back in Korea with her parents. [Music] How did Hank come about? Hank was named after Tom Hanks. If you look at my dog, for some reason, he just looks like a Hank. He's chic. When I go home, I'm like, "Hank, I miss you." And he's very like, "Cool. It's good to see you, you know." Um, so we're a good match because I'm very needy, but Hank is very like, "Okay." And we balance each other out. Yeah, we definitely balance each other out. Perfect combo in my opinion. I don't think I hope he feels the same, but he's very like chic. He's He's [Music] chill. Isn't her dog a cutie? You know, Ros isn't the only one who has a dog named after another celebrity. Reese Witherspoon has a dog that's named Coco Chanel after the iconic fashion designer. Now, Ros calls her dog Chic. If you look at my dog, for some reason, he just looks like a Hank. He's chic. Can you guess the meaning of chic? Shy, curly, [Music] stylish. That's right. You can use it to describe people, pets, or even places that have a cool or sophisticated vibe. You like my hair? Yes. Very nice. Very chic. So, we're a good match because I'm very needy, but Hank is very like Okay. And we balance each other out. Yeah, we definitely balance each other out. If two people get along well and fit together nicely, they're a good match. Sometimes you'll hear people say it about you and a friend they want to set you up with. This means organize a romantic date. Like in this example, I have a friend in town I'd like to set you up with. No, thank you. Thomas is very bright, has a wonderful sense of humor. I think it's a good match. Are you free on Thursday? No. Have you ever had a friend or partner that needs a lot of attention, affection, or demands your support? Well, you could describe them as needy. In this case, Ros wants attention and closeness more than Hank does. But Hank is very like, "Okay, we balance each other out." Yeah, we definitely balance each other out. When two people have different personalities or strengths that complement each other, they balance each other out. One person has what the other person might lack, making them work well together. How does such a driven woman like you end up with with a slacker like me? We're the perfect match. We balance each other out. Yeah, we definitely balance each other out. Perfect combo in my opinion. I don't think I hope he feels the same, but he's very like chic. He's he's chill. Perfect combo is short for a perfect combination. When two things or people go together really well, like French fries and a chocolate shake, or red wine and blue cheese. We natives use the slang expression chill a ton. It's perfect to describe that friend that's calm, relaxed, and easygoing. So, Ros being needy and Hank being chill makes them a perfect combo. By the way, we can also tell someone to chill if we notice they need to relax. like in this example or chill. I'm chill. Careful because depending on the tone you use, it could sound a bit direct or rude. All right, guys. Now comes the most fun part of the lesson. Now, you have to test everything that you've learned today by watching all three interviews without any subtitles and seeing how well you understand them. And to just up the challenge a little bit, we've also prepared some quiz questions for you. Are you ready? Let's jump into the [Music] test. It's really just for like it's kind of fun for the funsies. Uh I was like at the studio and we were just we're all drinking Diet Coke over hamburgers and then I was like I'll teach you guys Korean drinking games. And then but I like I caught on to it cuz all these they're not Korean and they're just all Americans and they were like ah pate like they were like what is this? This is crazy. And I was like, "Wow, you guys are really loving this." And so I said it as a joke. We should make a song. And jokingly, we made the song and that's what our is right now. So you did it from just playing around. Yeah. Doing this game. Doing the game. And now it's become a worldwide hit. Yeah. I mean, Bruno jumped on it, so I mean, he helped a lot. When she says Bruno jumped on it, what does she mean? He physically jumped onto the table. He criticized the song harshly. He quickly got [Music] [Music] involved. So I was like, "Okay, I can give credit for myself." Cuz I think obviously it was not a smooth ride and it just showed how much, you know, time and effort and blood, sweat, and tears I actually did put into it. And that was the moment where I I I allowed myself to acknowledge the fact that I am really proud that I'm at the point of promoting it. And so it really means a lot to me apparently. What does the phrase give credit for myself mean? To recognize her own hard work. To pay money to herself. To admit she made a mistake. How did Hank come about? Hank was named after Tom Hanks. If you look at my dog, for some reason, he just looks like a Hank. He's chic. Which of the following words is the closest synonym to chic? Clumsy, shy, stylish. when I go home, I'm like, "Hank, I miss you." And he's very like, "Cool. It's good to see you." You know? Um, so we're a good match because I'm very needy, but Hank is very like, "Okay." And we balance each other out. Yeah, we definitely balance each other out. Perfect combo in my opinion. I don't think I hope he feels the same, but he's very like chic. He's He's chill. Fill in the blank. A burger, fries, and cold Coca-Cola makes a perfect [Music] combo. Perfect combo. Ah, yeah. Amazing job today, guys. Now, don't let all this time and effort go to waste. If you want to be able to remember all the expressions and words that we covered today forever, then you have to try out the Real Life English app. And you can get access to this lesson with Rosé right now. Part of the half hour thing is you got to mic yourself. Yeah, exactly. We're cutting corners around here. Yeah. Uh, you know what? I'm just curious. I was bringing up. Do you ever lose it? Do you ever get angry? Is there an angry Tom Hanks?
