Overview
This lecture explains the basic components and process of how devices in your home connect to and use the internet, focusing on the flow of data and the function of key network devices.
Basic Home Network Components
- Typical devices in a home include smartphones, tablets, laptops (wireless) and desktops (often wired).
- Devices connect to a switch (wired) or an access point (wireless) to join the local network.
- The access point is physically connected to a switch, which manages wired devices.
- Both access points and switches connect to a router, which is connected to a modem.
- The modem links the home network to the broader internet.
Data Flow & Device Functions
- Wireless devices send data through the access point; wired devices send data directly to the switch.
- The switch manages device connections within the local area network (LAN) using MAC addresses.
- Data (ones and zeros) moves from devices to the switch, then to the router.
- The router assigns a destination label (like a shipping label) to data for internet delivery.
- The modem (modulate/demodulate) converts digital data for transmission over the internet.
Internet Connections & Speed
- The modem determines how quickly your data travels based on your connection type: cable, DSL, fiber, satellite, or radio frequency.
- Fiber provides the fastest internet speeds; satellite is typically the slowest.
All-In-One Devices: SOHO Routers
- Most homes use a single wireless router (SOHO: Small Office/Home Office) that combines an access point, switch, and router in one device.
- The SOHO router connects to the modem, which links to the internet.
Key Terms & Definitions
- Switch — Device that connects multiple devices on a LAN and manages data flow using MAC addresses.
- Access Point — Device that provides wireless network access to mobile devices.
- Router — Device that directs data to its correct destination on or off the local network.
- Modem — Device that converts digital data for transmission to/from internet service providers.
- SOHO Router — All-in-one device combining switch, access point, and router, commonly used in home networks.
- LAN (Local Area Network) — The network of devices within your home.
- MAC Address — Unique identifier assigned to network devices.
