Lecture Notes: Brain Vesicle Development

Overview

  • Focus on primary and secondary structures leading to adult brain.
  • Two slides used to meet the level three objective.
    • Slide covers secondary brain vesicles and mature structures.

Key Concepts

Brain Vesicles and Development

  • Primary Brain Vesicles:

    • Neural tube develops into:
      • Prosencephalon
      • Mesencephalon
      • Rhombencephalon
  • Secondary Brain Vesicles:

    • Prosencephalon -> Telencephalon, Diencephalon
    • Mesencephalon -> Mesencephalon
    • Rhombencephalon -> Metencephalon, Myelencephalon

Outcomes of Brain Vesicle Development

  • Telencephalon: Develops into the cerebrum, comprising various lobes.
  • Diencephalon: Remains as diencephalon (thalamus, epithalamus, hypothalamus).
  • Mesencephalon: Becomes part of the brain stem, specifically the peduncles and superior/inferior colliculi.
  • Metencephalon: Forms cerebellum and pons (part of the brain stem).
  • Myelencephalon: Develops into the medulla oblongata.

Examination Points

  • Cerebrum:

    • Primary: Prosencephalon
    • Secondary: Telencephalon
  • Thalamus/Diencephalon:

    • Primary: Prosencephalon
    • Secondary: Diencephalon
  • Superior/Inferior Colliculi & Cerebral Peduncles:

    • Primary: Mesencephalon
    • Secondary: Mesencephalon
  • Pons/Cerebellum:

    • Primary: Rhombencephalon
    • Secondary: Metencephalon
  • Medulla Oblongata:

    • Primary: Rhombencephalon
    • Secondary: Myelencephalon

Additional Notes

  • Secondary vesicles are highlighted in slides; primary vesicles need to be known.
  • Titles in brain lecture slides list primary/secondary vesicles before new structures.
