welcome everyone today we are doing class number one the first class in um if you're watching this as a makeup make sure that you have your workbook open to the page number four page number four is a page you want to be on as we will get started on the class number one the first class so class number one actually has a lot of information and really really important information so you definitely want to make sure you're taking good notes using the workbook if for some reason you don't have the workbook then um join Google Classroom you just open up Google you use the three little dots to Google Apps you'll see your Google Gmail um Google drive documents if you go down a little bit you get to Google Classroom Google Classroom is a tool that we use to allow students access to different documents so this is a Google Classroom you can see the code right there on the screen I'll zoom in a little bit um to read that code to you you'll need to enter the code s k a t s b M okay you can see the code I'll make it even bigger on the screen S A tsbm okay so use that code join the Google Classroom Google Classroom will have many different types of documents for example frequently asked questions there's a makeup assignment here um that tells you how to do the makeup class if you miss a day of class it'll just tell you as exactly what you need to do um and um how to do the makeup assignment if we go further down we can see the workbook the workbook is right here um so if you don't have the workbook or you lost your copy there it is you can download a copy print it at home or you can come during office hours and we can give you a physical copy of the workbook some other things on here are on the Washington driver's guide uh study through the Washington driver guide that's a very important thing to read through as it tells you a lot of the different rules and laws on the road as a driver is very important you know the rules otherwise you could end up in a crash and well we don't want that some other stuff on here is uh there's even a study guide when you take your testing and there's a practice test as well so get familiar with the Google Classroom um look through this make sure you familiarize yourself with what's on here and um make sure you join the Google Classroom using that code on the screen right now anyways what else are we talking about well another big important thing to know about is parent night you may want to take a picture of this uh use your phone or a screenshot or something like that where we have a parent night every Monday from 5:00 p.m. to 6: p.m. we're not going to do it on any holidays and so there's a meeting code we use zoom so you go to zoom you have this meeting ID and your parents can join in to um listen during a parent night there's a lot of really good information for parents and so I would highly recommend if your parents are interested interested to give them this information all right so housekeeping rules I'm assuming you're probably in your own house right now so at any point during the class if you need a quick bathroom break or you need to get some water or snacks is not that big of a deal where it becomes a problem is when people are not here they're not engaged they're not participating if you miss an attendance check if we notice people are not here if we notice people are missing engagement or they're not participating and especially if someone misses their attendance check they will be marked absent for the day okay so yes it's okay to quickly get up and you know get some water or something like that use a bathroom just make sure you are present in um that you're here doing your attendance checks as well there's a syllabus if you have the workbook open the syllabus is on page number three page number three will show you the syllabus and it tells you um what each class has uh there's 17 classes in total and um on top of the 17 classes there will be five driving lessons so five driving lessons is where you just sit in the car with an instructor and we teach you material that you're learning um based on which Drive you're doing uh for example the first drive is just like basic driving skills second driving lesson is like parallel parking third driving lesson is City Driving fourth driving lesson is a freeway and the fifth driving lesson is a practice exam or practice test okay so become familiar with the syllabus to point out a couple of key things here I going to circle each class that has a test so you will be doing a test on class number five you're also going to have a test on class number eight you're going to have another test on class number 11 and you'll have a another test on class number 15 it's important to do well on these tests and to make sure you spend a little bit of time to study so that you can um succeed okay our goal is to make sure you learn the material so that you can get your license but also so that you're a safe driver driving is risky is your life that could be injured very serious injury you could hurt someone else you could hurt somebody in the car or worst case scenario you could die in a car crash so it is very important that you are really focused engaged that you're participating taking good notes and that you're taking it seriously because it's your life it's literally your life or it could be somebody else's life all right well um class expectations for most people this is not required if you're an online student and um this is a part of the terms in agreements however from some students they'll be required to uh fill in this uh document with their parents if you're not sure if you need to do this just ask your instructor and your instructor will tell you whether or not you're required to do this um so if you're online student you're not going to be required to do this if you're an in-person student and you're taking class in person you will have this document and your instructor will tell you to fill this in and uh get a signed by your parents and then bring it back all right um speaking of expectations this is I would say a little bit more serious than your standard High School class when it comes to driving it really is a life skill it's something you're going to use every single day and most people drive every day of the week and on top of that driving is pretty dangerous if you do it improperly or recklessly you could get seriously hurt or die so our expectations is that you're on time you're here you're participating you're engaged that um if you're late you're not more than 10 minutes late if you are more than 10 minutes late were required by law to Mark you absent that you're ready to learn that you are taking it seriously that you are ready with your notes U writing things down engaged asking questions um participating right that you're prepared that you have your notes ready that you have your workbook open that you have your you know pencil or pen or whatever you're using to take notes that you're respectful simple enough right I shouldn't have to explain what being respectful means at this point in your life I think you can understand how to be respectful in a classroom rude um disrespectful or um very like people yelling and things like that is not appropriate in any manner at all so when we get students or even parents and Guardians who are acting in a very disrespectful rude or hostile manner we have the right to suspend you from our program or even expel you from the school without refund and you know it's as simple as that we're here to teach you a very important skill that could save your life and it's you know it's important that you take it seriously and that you're showing respect to your teachers and instructors and admin staff here as well all right well let's see what else we're learning here you're going to see the page number four so you want to have your workbook open to page number four and on page number four write this down for number one number number one in the workbook tells us that we have 17 classes in total and you cannot miss more than 3 days if you miss more than three days you'll have to retake the entire program with a $150 fee okay so you cannot miss more than three days if you do Miss class you just simply use a Google Classroom to make it up you have to make up every day you miss if you miss class number three you just do the makeup assignment for that day and all of those details are on the Google Classroom okay number two number two in the workbook uh number two tells us that we need to participate in five driving lessons um you'll schedule those uh throughout uh several months most people take anywhere from three months five months even some people take um six seven months to complete these driving lessons I've even seen it take a year or more than a year for some students so I would say on average it's anywhere from five months to one year for most people to complete the whole process and to get their driver's license so it takes time and well it takes time to learn how to drive and a lot of practice too completing an observation Drive observation is exactly what it sounds like you just sit in the car and You observe another student driver to schedule an observation you'll basically set that up with either your instructor or uh emailing an admin staff okay I'll give you that email address later on observation we can schedule that for you all other scheduling is done online and we can talk more about that um later today this is number four in the workbook number four is a orange PowerPoint slide and anytime you see a orange PowerPoint slide I strongly encourage you to Star this put a star next to this it's really important and something on a quiz or a test something you really need to know and it takes an average of six months to one year to finish the five driving lessons and to get a license so I'll give you a moment to write that down in your notes excuse me so yeah it takes time it takes time if you're expecting to get your license in just a few weeks guess what that's not really how that works there's a lot of state laws that we have to follow and if we don't follow the state rules our business will get shut down I've seen it happen Okay so because we need to follow State rules and we need to follow state laws it takes several months or even up to a year for people to get a driver's license it takes time okay cool some other requirements I haven't um finished talking about yet number five in the workbook pass the exam you'll have several testing we do in the class you'll also have the state testing the state testing includes the written exam and the driving exam all testing can be conducted through the school we have instructors such as myself who are examiners I'm an examiner so I will give the testing um including I can conduct the written exam and I can give the driving exam as well so no need to go to the department of license to take your test number six number six again um do not show up more than 10 minutes late make sure you write that down in your workbook as we are going to move on to our next topic okay all right next up what do I do if I miss class well as I said before you want to join the Google Classroom Google Classroom is a really key part of our course that has has a lot of really good information um as I mentioned earlier so join that use the code make sure you're a part of the Google Classroom if you miss class there's a makeup assignment the makeup assignment and all the details for that are posted on the Google Classroom it tells you exactly what you need to do okay so yeah um it's really pretty simple thing if you miss class keep in mind you cannot miss more than three days and um if you need to contact the school for any reason the best way to do that is through email the email address being on the screen contact at 405 drivingschool.com okay all right so what else are are we talking about today remember you cannot miss more than three days of class and any day you miss has to be made up instruction permit keep in mind if you get a paper like this one here read what the paper says because this says it's a pre-application I've seen times that students and parents both see this thinking this is a permit an application is not a permit I want to make this very very clear that an application is not a permit okay a permit looks like one of the ones uh down below it says instruction permit it is either the um plastic hard copy or it says say temporary um a document it'll say it's an instruction permit um so those are permits at the bottom a permit allows you to start practicing to learn you don't actually have to learn with a parent it could be any older adult who's at least 21 years old and that adult has had their license for at least 5 years so it could be an aunt or an uncle grandma grandpa an older sibling it could be a cousin it could just be a family friend so you don't necessarily have to learn from your parents uh it could be someone else who is teaching you as long as that person follows these requirements okay all right so getting a permit is our next kind of a topic if you don't have your permit already there's a couple of steps you want to follow the first step is you just apply you have to apply for the permit you apply through the Department of Licensing usually we call this a pre-application pre-application you're just applying to get a permit now when you apply to get your permit you're going to be sent a license number this is really important your license number is something that we're going to need from you so license number is a few characters and digits it's about 12 um characters and digits it starts with the letter wdl wdl and then it's you know a couple other numbers and letters after that you need to get your license number this is a really really important step so yeah apply online get your license number once you finished that you need to send your license number to the school this is so important and you can see this in big red text do not skip this step do not skip this step even if you have your permit we still need your license number the school will need your license number from all drivers we need to have that okay so it's very very important that all of you make sure that you have sent over your license number to the school in case you didn't get it before there's the email address you can just email the School contact 405 drivingschool.com if you're sending an email tell them who you are right a name first last name tell them you know it doesn't have to be a long email but you guys get the point all right so what do I do after this basically the school is going to confirm your license number you need to wait a little bit maybe a couple days will give you the next steps ultimately the final step is you go to the Department of Licensing with your parents and you get a permit from the Department of Licensing however I need to make this very very clear this is a final step if you have not done the other steps you will not be able to get your permit okay so if you just walk into the Department of Licensing they're going to turn you away they're going to say nope you can't get your permit so you have to have to make sure that you have completed the other steps first okay so really the easiest way is once you've done the steps you go with your parents to the Department of Licensing and you get your permit through the Department of Licensing with a permit no you cannot drive by yourself you cannot drive by yourself until you get a driver's license the permit is what allows you to start to practice so yeah definitely cannot drive by yourself all right let's move on to our next topic and that's going to be number seven in the workbook number seven in the workbook is a really important one another orange PowerPoint slide really anytime you see these orange PowerPoint slides you should star this star this um if I I'm telling you to Star something that means it's really important it'll be on a test on a quiz and literally just put a star next to it anytime you drive always make sure you have both your permit and photo ID photo ID could be a school ID it could be a passport it could be a state ID your photo ID could be your permit if your permit has a picture on it no pictures on phones what that means is no electronic pictures of permits it has to be with you you have to have have it you have to have the physical copy okay you can't just have a photo of your permit that's not good enough so anytime you drive even driving with your parents anytime you drive always make sure you have your permit and photo ID okay all right next up on the list number eight number eight you can see is another one you want to Star so star this in the workbook as we talk about license your license is going to eventually occur but you need to meet a few requirements first to get a driver's license you must be at least 16 years old to get a driver's license you must have your permit for at least 6 months so remember earlier when I said it takes most people 6 months to one year well guess what this is the reason why there's a state law that says you can't even get your license if you haven't had a permit for at least 6 months okay 50 hours of practice you can log these hours in whatever way you want um you can log it your parents can write it down put it on a piece of paper write it down in the workbook um on the workbook that should be page number two um page number two there is a driving log um you can put it on a phone or there's some apps that allow people to log uh hours it doesn't really matter how you do it it's just important that you have um at least 50 hours of practice 10 of those hours being at nighttime so once again write that down for number eight and make sure you have a star on this one okay so what we're looking at next is also a part of number eight and um you will need to of course pass the driver's um education course you need to pass the State written exam and you need to pass the state driving exam okay once again I'll um repeat myself that you can take your testing with the school there's no longer a need to go to the Department of Licensing to do your testing currently in 2023 right now um if you're you're over 18 that technically adults that are over 18 don't need anything other than taking the test that they would just take a written exam take a driving exam and get their license if they pass um those laws might change in the future but currently um people over 18 just need to pass a test anywh who next on the list when you get your license if you're a minor great the license allows you to drive by yourself that's what the license allows is now you can start driving on your own that's fantastic that's wonderful you don't need the supervision of an adult anymore but this license has some restrictions if you are a minor if you're under thee age of 18 you'll be given what's called a intermediate driver's license the IDL intermediate driver's license comes with the following restrictions keep in mind as you can see you want to Star this you should start each one of these starting with number nine number nine says for the first six months there's no passengers under the age of 20 except for family basically you can't have anyone else in the car with you unless it's family or if it's people who are older um over the age of 20 in other words they don't want you chauffe furring your friends that you're not allowed to drive your friends to school or whatever and that'll apply for the first six months after that 6mon waiting period for the next 6 months you're now allowed up to three passengers you can drive your friends you can have up to three passengers okay for the first 12 months or in other words for the first year they don't want you driving between the late night or early morning depending on your perspective between the hours of 1:00 a.m. to 5 a.m. um reasoning for that is that's a pretty dangerous time to drive and so really all of these restrictions is to help new drivers stay safe okay there's been many studies that show um people are at the highest possible risk in the first six months after they get their driver's license so we want to reduce that risk as much as possible all right well here's some other rules that are not necessarily stated um but it's still things you really need to know and these rules apply to most drivers not just intermediate driver's license but most drivers and no cell phone period no cell phones unless reporting an emergency and even for an adult driver even for someone like myself there are rules against using cell phones cell phones are very dangerous very hazardous it's a major risk and could cause people to crash if I turn 18 um I don't have um restrictions like the ones we talked about earlier there will still be some other um you know like rules against cell phones for example of course there's rules against using drugs and alcohol I mean those are just just rules that apply to everybody but the restrictions that I mentioned for number nine number 10 and number 11 would no longer apply if you're over the age of 18 it's possible that these rules might change in the future but anyways okay so let's take a look at our next topic you have to think to yourself as well why do they have these rules in place why do they restrict your license why is this happening and the main reason is young adults are at a really high risk of crashing in Collision young adults crash at two or three times the rate as older more experienced adults okay so that inexperienced plays a massive role so let's take a quick look at the video that hopefully will explain why these rules are in place now statistically speaking of 11 drivers within their first 2 years of driving 37 will receive tickets for speeding U bear with me I want to just do a quick little optimization that'll make the video a little clearer and easier to watch four will be ticketed for DUI 28 will be involved in Collision 13 will be injured in a collision one will be killed in a collision and 17 well 17 will be just fine based on National driving statistics team driving collisions have been extended ofely research one study by the Pacific Institute for research and evaluation found that 16 and 17y old drivers make the same kind of driving errors as older drivers they just make them more often so what are these errors failing to scan the driving environment safe drivers take that extra moment of time to look ahead to the side to the rear before entering traffic before changing lanes and before passing other cars teen drivers often don't take enough time observing traffic before they make their move think of this as a more impulsive style of driving secondly in attention being distracted this is a big factor in teen crashes and it's a growing Menace with the Advent of cell phones and texting the major reasons for collisions involving 16 and 17 old drivers failing to visually scan the driving environment 44% not paying attention 23% speeding 21% and while those are the big win winners there's also tailgating 6% DUI 2% and note that this is a major cause for fatal collision and fatigue 2% so I think at this point you get the general idea driving is a major risk and especially for young adults with little experience um so this is why I keep saying that you have to have to take it very seriously because at the end of the day it's your life or even somebody else's life that could be in danger so these rules are really in place for your safety as a bonus information you won't want to write this down in the extra note section there's a section in the workbook that has um room for your notes um so write this down on page number four and also star this as as well you notice that we've had a lot of stars well I mentioned earlier there's a lot of really important information from today's class and remember anytime I tell you to Star something it'll be on a quiz on a test really really important if you change your address notify the Department of Licensing within 10 days okay give you a moment to write that down in your in your notes all right questions if you do have questions I'm gonna strongly encourage you to look at that Google classroom in the Google Classroom one of the very first documents and I can zoom in so you can see it better is a frequently Asked question document if I open this up um you'll see some of the most frequently asked questions that I get from students so it's very likely that most of your questions are in this document things like how do I get my permit or what do I do if I miss class things like what are the requirements for getting my license how do I schedule an observation Drive how do I schedule my driving lessons these are things that I or we do our best to cover in class but sometimes these questions get skipped over and so that's why we have this document to hopefully answer the questions that you may have okay so once again that is a part of the Google Classroom that's why it's very important that you get into this Google Classroom there's a Code one more time in case for some reason you didn't get it earlier going back to the PowerPoint slide now um if you have questions and some of your questions are not answered um make sure you're asking your instructor and if you have a question that we're not answering and your instructor didn't really answer either you can feel free to reach out to the admin staff by email really email is one of the best ways to um get your questions answered as well but I would encourage you to look through that document first ask your instructor and then email as kind of like a last resort okay driving lesson so all driving lessons are scheduled online and I can quickly show you how to do that right um basically you'll go to our website 405 driving school.com 405 drivingschool.com right here shows us the website and um one of the most important parts is making sure you sign in to your account so there's a sign in option at the top right corner here so I'm going to do that that way we can see what it looks like to schedule so bear with me for a moment while I sign into my account and I have to switch um so that I can show you so when you sign in as a client as a member you'll see something similar to this it might look a little different for you you'll have a drop- down menu in the drop- down menu we'll have options for driver's education for driving lessons for the written exam for the driving exam if you're trying to do a driving lesson you'll click for that driving lesson and it'll give you details on kind of the basic ideas of what you need to know I will strongly encourage you to read through this at the bottom if I scroll down I have options here now I'm going to use Renton as a example your driving lesson is 1 hour 60 minutes this is for you 60 Minutes do not schedule the 30 minute lesson 30 minutes is for adult drivers who are like a refresher course for someone this is not for student drivers okay so do not schedule this 30 minute time you need to upbook one hour so click on that one hour time slot again I'm using Renton as an example if you were a Vancouver student you would click on Vancouver if you're a Lynnwood you would click on lywood okay but I'll continue using Renton as an example and Bam everything that's in green is available so I can see available on um the date over here available December uh 12th 13th 14th 15th I can see the green slots are available in the morning afternoon and evening let's say I want afternoon I can click on the time and I can see there's time available 4 to 5 4:30 to 5:30 okay it'll even tell me the instructor I'm booking with so that's me um I have availability that day and I just would click that um and go through the next steps now for me on my profile it looks like I have to pay that's because I would have to I don't have um a pass um for you if you have paid for the classes you would not have um payment you don't need to pay because the driving lessons are already paid for as a part of the class so when you pay for class um the driving lessons are included testing however may not be included the testing depending on location might not be included in the payment so keep in mind when you schedule a test it is possible that you may have to pay for those exams okay so scheduling is actually quite simple to do um you just go to our website and click a couple buttons and it's very simple it's it's pretty easy to do um if you could also see um a reminder of how to do that with the frequently Asked question document okay so how many lessons do you need well you need five driving lessons five driving lessons and one observation observation again is exactly what it sounds like you sit in the back of the car You observe another student driver just an observation you're just observing somebody else drive you can schedule an observation um either with your instructor or most of the time the best way to schedule is email um the admin staff um there's that email again um contact 405 drivingschool.com um you just need one of these so you just need to do one observation it's a requirement by state law that you have to do this so it is what it is um but yeah okay now cancellation fee I mentioned no more than 10 minutes late if you're late if you don't have your if you don't have your permit if you cancellate if you just don't show up if you whatever the reason might be a lake cancellation fee will cost you a $40 fee we need to pay instructors for the time that they're here working right so if you just don't show up yes we're gonna charge you a fee if you show up but you don't have your ID we're going to charge you a fee if you show up late we are going to charge you a fee we require 24-hour notice and you have to have your ID you have to have your permit okay so try to avoid those fees um if you do need to cancel an appointment cancel at least 24hour in advance okay all right so here's another um really important topic and this is number 12 in the workbook still looking at page number four on page number four number 12 number 12 says that our expectation is that students have a minimum of at least 5 hours of Prior experience at home before they ever do any driving lessons with the school the reasoning for that is mostly a safety concern if I as the instructor take your student directly on to a 40 mile per hour road on a busy street with other drivers and you have almost no practice or you've never driven a car we're going to crash that's what's going to happen so it's very important that you are practicing at home as much as physically possible remember the rule is that you need 50 hours of practice think of this like any other skill you're learning football basketball piano violin it takes dedication it takes practice it takes numerous amounts of hours and hours and hours weeks and weeks months and months to learn okay and that's true for almost any skill a especially for driving so yeah you have to be practicing parents if you're scared to practice with your kids take them to a parking lot I can walk faster than 5 miles per hour I can walk faster than 5 miles per hour what's the worst that's going to happen a 5 m hour crash it's going to be a small small little Dent maybe a couple of scratches okay take them to a parking lot anyhow driving lessons you can also see this on page number four um let's break it down to the simple stuff Drive number one is basic driving it's left turns it's right turns it might be um just control of the car acceleration breaking um basic RightWay rules stop signs intersections um it's awareness it's Vision it's it's kind of just more of the basics more of the basic skills sometimes we'll do more advanced things if students have um more practice if they're capable of doing these skills we might take them on faster speed roads 35 40 miles per hour we might have them change lanes just depending on the student and where they're at so we try our best to meet the student um where they are especially on the first driving lesson okay after you do your first driving lesson you need to make sure you're practicing again as much as physically possible we strongly strongly strongly strongly recommend that you're getting about five hours of practice between each driving lesson so five hours before number one 10 hours in total right 10 hours in total before lesson two 15 hours in total before lesson 3 20 hours in total before lesson 4 and 25 more hours before lesson five the more the merrier if you can do more than this fantastic get as much practice as you can so yeah definitely write that down for number 13 Drive Number Two Drive number two is actually a really really important lesson it's where we teach students the skills they need to know know for their driver's exam it's things like backing around a corner it's things like parallel parking uphill parking downhill parking changing lanes it's the really really important skills that you need to know for your test so this is a key super important driving lesson and it's really important you practice these skills at home as well so yeah we'll teach you these skills we can teach you parallel parking and then um it's up to you to practice that at home okay drive number three is City Driving um when I say City Driving um if you're a renon student you'd be going through renon downtown renon The Landing um if you're Vancouver or lywood just think of like a busier Downtown City area and that's probably where the instructor will take you I'm not too familiar with those cities so I'm not exactly sure where the instructors go you can always ask your instructor hey where are we going today or where are we going next time what is the next lesson feel free to ask questions because you know otherwise I'm going to assume that you don't have any questions question number four or sorry Drive number four I mean on Drive Number Four is the freeway the freeway or the highway Drive um will take you to a major intersection a major freeway interchange um all those things um the interstate just all the good stuff on the freeway a highp speed 60 M an hour changing lanes merging on ramps off ramps can be intimidating and a little bit scary the first couple times but after you've done the freeway a few times you get to learn for yourself it's really not that bad Pi practice of course so that's Drive number four in a nutshell and drive number five is a practice exam we often call drive five the practice Tess or the practice exam um for good reason we're going to keep a little score we're going to grade you we're going to see okay how would you do if I gave you a test tomorrow what would your score be how would you do would you pass would you fa um so it's not a real test it's just practice but we're going to treat it the same way we would on a test we're gonna grade you we're going to score you we're gonna see how you're doing your score doesn't really matter but um it's important to track how you're doing all right so at this point I'm going to put on a 10minute timer um uh usually when it's close to 1 hour in the class we take a 10-minute break so I will put on a 10-minute timer and um if you're watching this as a makeup you can feel free to skip ahead all right so that 10minute timer is over so we will get back to the second half of our class class number one today um that also means you should have your workbook open to the next page looking at page number five make sure you join me in opening your workbook to page number five as we get back to the class so again if you have questions um I would first ask you to look at the frequently Asked question document that this is a part of the Google classroom room I would then tell you to ask your instructor and finally if you still didn't get an answer you can ask admin staff by email I want to encourage you to maybe have that as your final step um as we get a lot of emails and are not always able to respond to all of them all right check in what does that mean I'm checking in with you to see how are you when I was your age when I was 15 or 16 I was super excited for driving and I hope you feel the same um you know I I don't want students to come in with a like they don't want to be here or like a poor attitude and so remember our expectation is that you're here learning that you want to be here that you want to learn driving is a really good like super super critical skill is something you absolutely will need to know how to do and we're going to do everything we can to teach you that skill how to do it how to do it safely what to look for what to watch for okay lots of things to cover so how excited are you on a scale from 1 to 10 I don't know right for me it was like a 9.5 um I was definitely really excited to get my license and start driving it's like this level of independency that almost a level of Freedom where you get your license you can start going places you could start going where you want to go and it's it's Freedom that you probably haven't really had um but that freedom comes with a huge responsibility responsibility as a driver well if you do it improperly if you do it d dangerously or recklessly it'll lead to injury your injury somebody else's injury or worst case scenario fatality that motor vehicles is the number one cause of leading um death for young adults so crashing in a car that's not good right that could be very fatal and we don't want that I don't want a single one of you to to ever crash to ever crash and we're going to do everything we can to teach you how to drive safely so time to get serious it is a freedom it is this kind of new level of responsibility and for most of you you've only been passengers you've been in the back seat you've been a passenger but this is really your first time as a driver and so you got to understand the risk that you are responsible for the safety of yourself for the safety of other passengers for the safety of other drivers other cars on the road other people pedestrians bicyclist motorcycles it's in your hands and so you have to take it seriously you have to any who moving forward moving on lots to cover well one second 1 second is on your workbook and I think I told you the wrong page we should actually be looking at page number four sorry about that page number four on page number four we're going to see this on number 14 number 14 90% 90% of all fatal crashes could be avoided if the person had just reacted sooner and just by one second that's why things like your phone in distractions are very very dangerous because it takes your eyes off the road and your eyes off the road for even just one second is long enough for someone to get hurt to get injured or to die in a crash so star this make sure you have that down for number 14 if for some reason you're lost and you're like I don't see where this is you should again be looking at page number four page number four we got a little bit more to write down let's see what's next what's next is really our primary goal our number one reason for having education is safety we want you to be safe drivers we want you to never ever be in a crash or Collision or injured or worse so in order to do that you have to learn how to drive carefully and react into situations that are difficult this is a difficult situation we have a narrow road lots of parked cars and if we don't react properly or if we're distracted not paying attention well guess what happens boink we end up in a crash okay now this crash could have occurred for any number of reasons um but you have to make sure you're aware of your surroundings now not only a crash could be worse you could end up injured this is a clear case where someone just didn't follow the rules that they did not and were not paying attention distracted they weren't looking whatever it might have been so pay attention the light's red with that red light that driver just blew right through a red light they were obviously not looking or paying attention and this um crash ended in injury as well which of course is really bad death I'm gonna say a number this number is something you might want to write down the number is 40,000 40000 40,000 what does that number represent 40,000 is the number of traffic fatalities in America each and every single year okay so we're talking a matter of multiple traffic deaths every day okay 40,000 traffic fatalities every year so yeah we don't want that of course it's your life in your hands and we you got to be careful you have to have to be careful okay often times people think of parking lots as uh easy area and they can be big open parking lot with not a lot of cars is super easy super um simple but busy parking lots at a grocery store or something like that that at Costco is incredibly stressful and very high amount of activity so let's see what happens to this driver you are about to witness one of the best arguments against elderly people retaining their license until they're either blind or dead watch 92-year-old Russell Kerr as he backs out of his parking stall in the Blu gry minivan okay so far so good now get ready to count with me 1 2 3 four five six oh we've got some speed going now seven and that might have been eight nine cars in total were damaged by the insure fuel driver who was finally stopped at the sight of a subsequent no I don't mean to make a defense for this person obviously their driving was extremely Reckless and probably shouldn't be driving a car um they hit seven eight cars in a parking lot that's unacceptable um you know parking lots can be dangerous places you got to use extreme hazard in parking lots especially busy parking lots like this one lots of people lots of podian lots of cars and it means you got to be extra cautious extra careful remember that once second earlier one second makes a difference imagine a scenario where this driver did not respond in time it's pretty easy to imagine because that happened so quickly you almost missed it and so this was expert navigation expert awareness expert um ability to react in um really excellent job by this driver of avoiding a situation that could have been really really bad um so yeah um one second makes a difference all right I think you get the point or do you or do you find a place in your notes um either uh there's an extra part on P page number four so there should be room on page number four um find a place in your notes in the workbook to write this down follow most of the laws most of the time I want you right now to think of a situation in which you might have to break the rules I'll give you a few seconds to think about it think of a situation of when you might have to break the rules now your answer to that question might be something along the lines of an emergency your car is on fire you have a crash or you're trying to avoid a crash uh there's an animal in the road or something else blocking the street there will be extreme situations where you might have to break the standard rules okay so that you don't crash so follow most of the laws most of the time there might even be scenarios where uh breaking a rule is just a safer thing to do I'll give you an example what is safer if all the cars are going 50 miles an hour is it safer you to for you to go like 30 miles an hour or is it safer for you to go 50 well the answer is pretty simple it's safer for you to go 50 in most cases it is safer to go the flow of traffic even if traffic is going a little fast or speeding most of the time I would encourage you to go with the general flow of traffic now don't drive like a maniac and don't drive crazy don't go 15 over in the pouring rain or snow or ice or something like that you still got to use caution you still got to be careful you still got to make sure you're driving in a way that is logical and makes sense well follow most of the laws most of the time hey number 15 um once again still looking at page number four page number four we have this one telling us that the number one reason young adults crash is inexperience inexperience is really the leading to cause of crashes for young adults okay you can think of it like this you have five hours maybe 10 hours maybe you have 20 hours or 50 hours maybe you have 100 hours I have 15 plus years your parents have 20 plus years your grandparents have 40 plus years of Driving Experience okay so that's a little bit of a difference I'm just saying all right next on the list let's see what's coming next well that means you should join me in looking at the next page page number five page number five we get to talk about vehicle Basics and a little bit of this is on the workbook uh I would also encourage you to take some extra notes at the bottom of the page where there's plenty of room for notes okay so sometimes not every single thing is in the workbook but there should be extra room for notes if um you find something is important to write down okay so vehicle Basics let's go through some rapid fire basic skills rapid fire question number one do we drive with both of our feet no we don't we drive with the one foot you're going to rely on your right foot doing the job your right foot controls the gas pedal your right foot controls the brake pedal and you switch in between gas or brake depending on what you need you do not use your left foot the only time you would ever use your left foot is something like in a manual stick shift vehicle where you have to change thear here using your left foot pressing down on the clutch uh but most of you that's not going to apply rapid fire question number two is it important to check the car yeah you should probably get familiar with the car and make sure you're checking that it's in a good condition to drive check the things like tires make sure they're not flat make sure they're in a good condition check things like if there's body damage to the car check things like the windows make sure there's no major cracks or um something like that check things like if there's any debris maybe there has been a windstorm or bad weather conditions and now there's some tree branches or glass or uh rocks or debris that's around your car and that might not be safe check to make sure you didn't accidentally put something on your car and I've seen this happen more times than I can count and it's really awkward and a little sad when someone puts their phone on the top of their car and they forget about it and they drive away you could say goodbye to that phone you could say goodbye to that cup of water or or that cup of coffee or whatever it was that you put on top of the car it's not a really good idea to put things on the top of your car um that's not a great location to put items because you might not remember and uh well that would be really bad windshield wipers yall live in Washington welcome to Washington it rains I mean I don't think I really need to say much more than that you got to make sure your wipers are in a good condition all right so rapid fire question number three should you know the inside of the car you should know the inside of the car like the back of your hand you should know every little button every little uh instrument every little uh tool every little um right you should know the inside of your vehicle like the back of your hand how do you signal left turn signal right turn signal how do you turn on your headlights your high beams how do you turn on the wipers how do you make the wipers slower or faster how do you put the car into gear Park reverse neutral Drive how do you read the speedometer or the gas um how do you read the um instruments how do you turn on the parking brake the heat the AC the defroster the okay I could go on and on and on and on it is absolutely critical that you take the time to learn the car I'll give you an example let's say it's a hot sun summer day I'm sweating I'm getting hot and I'm driving a car do you all think it would be a good idea to drive a car like this oh man I'm hot where's that AC H uh oh where is that AC man I just can't find it uh woo still looking I can't ah no that's not a good idea because I'm not looking at the road if I'm not looking at the road I could crash simple as that okay so learn your car and every car is going to be a little bit different if you don't know something ask ask I'd be happy to show you how to do the headlights or the wipers or whatever okay if you don't know something ask okay starting the car um I would assume the majority of you would either have a key ignition switch like this or a button where the button you just press to start using a key is a little bit more complex I suppose I mean it's really not that hard you just put the key in the hole there and you twist it on you start the engine all the way twist it as much as you can you start the engine usually you hear a sound and then you can let go of the key after you start the engine okay to get the key out it does require a slight push um pushing the key in twisting to the left and then pulling the key out and that's most cars um there's some cars that are different but this is why I said get to get to know the car know how to start the car how to turn it off how to take out the key um things like that okay the worst thing that could possibly happen is you step on the wrong pedal and you slam down on the brake or you slam down on the gas or something crazy because you're just like not familiar with the car and you don't know where things are and that would be really really bad that's why it's important you're practicing practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice practice okay some other thing are you all familiar with the Prindle Prindle look it says p n DL Prindle Prindle no you're not familiar with the Prindle Prindle is the gears um Park reverse neutral drive low gear I'll explain a couple that a lot of students don't normally know a neutral so neutral is basically the car is not in any gear neutral really the purpose for that is let's say you run out of gas and you have to push the car and put the car into neutral you're able to push it okay a drive of course simple enough in low gear a low gear really the purpose for low gear is your Towing if you're towing a boat or you're towing another car or you're towing um something like that low gear can be uh critical for people who tow um but if you're not Towing then you're probably not going to be using the low gear option keep in mind of course your vehicle may be extremely different it may look very much like this but it may be very very very different um every car is different and I've seen many different designs for this system some are not even in this location sometimes it's on the steering wheel um so every car is different get to know the car okay yes you need to be stopped keep in mind you must have your foot on the brake pedal you must have the car stopped pushing down on the brake then you can change to the next gear okay so completely fully stopped pushing down on the break then we can move it to reverse or move it to drive or move it to park okay so get to know the car your homework assignment get to know the car you don't even need to drive it you can just sit in the car and have your parent or guardian or whoever's teaching you just walk you through the interior and show you where things are and how to turn things on and how to turn things off all right parking brake the parking brake is a very essential part of parking and you're going to want to write this down in your workbook use your parking brake and use it it every single time you park every time always every time use your parking brake and use it every single time you park I'm begging you please and don't tell me your car doesn't have a parking brake that's a lie your car has a parking brake I promise it does every car has a parking brake it might be a foot lever parking brake it might might be the hand lever parking brake where it's a hand lever you pull up and down it might be a button that you press and then in some cars it might come on and off automatically your car has a parking brake use it every time you park every time the parking brake is what holds the weight of the car without the parking brake the car could roll away do do you want your car to roll away I don't even on a flat Road the car could roll okay so it's important you use the parking brake and you use it every single time all of the time always every time o get to know the vehicle when I say get to know the vehicle this is another part of what I mean by that right let's go through some of this I probably won't go through each and every single thing but we'll go through some of this okay we have our speed this car currently going zero uh 0o miles per hour or kilometers per hour if you're driving in Europe or in most countries actually um but zero miles per hour in America we have our odometer below this odometer reads how many um miles is on the car so I'm going go with Miles I know this says kilometer but in America we use miles per hour so miles per hour is zero um odometer would read 12,26 miles this car has 12,000 mil that it's driven which is really low actually that's a very small amount um a high amount of miles would be over a 100,000 um when you're reaching over 150,000 or over 200,000 that's where cars start to break down and need major repairs in many cases not always we have over here a couple of warning things um including up here as well um things like battery warning and seat belt warning um steering wheel locking warning or power steering it could be a couple of different meanings um we have in the middle in the middle some important ones we have our gas keep in mind look this car has almost zero gas zero zero at the bottom you're extremely close to zero you're less than a quarter tank you're you're probably going to need to stop for gas really really really soon um this arrow means something as well this arrow on the gas meter here this Arrow tells you where the gas tank is so in this car the gas tank is located on the left side of the vehicle this is our heat rating um heat rating could either be too hot or too cold looks like the scar is right in the middle there um looking good um you have a lot of other things here um you can find what these mean in the owner's manual or by looking it up online I'm not going to go over every single detail but it's important that you learn the car in the symbols in what these mean I'll go over one more though and that's this green symbol here this screen symbol here is our headlights that's headlights are active or headlights are on okay so get to learn your car get to learn what the ratings and meters and symbols mean in your vehicle because your car could be a little bit different than this or very different all right um a few other things you may just want to make sure you're aware of is make sure you're set properly in a good position seating position your mirrors are adjusted appropriately your phone is preferably on do not disturb airplane mode silence whatever you want to do or completely off um you you have your headlights on especially if weather conditions are not good um yeah double check before you go one thing I see is uh students sometimes get a little impatient I'll give students a key and they just try to immediately put the car into reverse or they just want to go they just want to leave I'm like dude slow it down slow it down you need to adjust you need to move your seat move the mirrors get those headlights on slow it down let's make sure we're completely set and ready before we actually go and start driving one thing to get ready is your seat belt of course always always wear your seat belt wear it every time wear it properly wear it correctly wear it every single time move your seat in a way that's comfortable right in a way that's comfortable um it should feel like your body's in a comfortable position relatively upright your legs are um in a good comfortable position where you can easily reach the pedals your arms are in a comfortable position where holding the wheel feels comfortable basically it should be comfortable the height of the seat should not be too low or even too high you should be able to see clearly um at a good height okay the idea when you're adjusting your seat is adjust your seat first then the mirrors so that you don't have to do the mirrors multip mle times there is a way to properly adjust your mirrors and we'll cover that momentarily this is what a proper seating position might look like notice their body position is not too leaned back um relatively upright arms are in a good comfortable position legs are in a good comfortable position can easily reach both pedals uh left leg is just off to the side um right leg is controlling the pedals um yeah so cool here is the proper way to adjust your mirrors I want you to pay close attention to this video as a lot of people not just students even adult drivers don't correctly adjust their mirrors so this is the correct way to adjust your mirrors and this is a way that you should be doing it setting your rear view mirrors properly will ensure that you can always see what's behind your car even if you don't have a high-tech blind spot monitor or one of the new full-time rear view cameras that are hitting the market is there really a correct way to position your rearview mirrors when it comes to size mirrors the answer is definitely yes many drivers will position the side mirror to show an expanse of the side of the car why do that are you afraid the rear of the car is going to vanish if you don't keep an eye on it what this does is it limits the field of view of the side mirror if you tilt the mirror outward you start to see what it's been missing such as another car to position your side mirrors make sure your driver's seat's where you want it and then lean a little bit to the left look out the side mirror and adjust it so just the very slightest amount of the car is visible on that Inside Edge then lean a little bit to the right and do the same on the right side mirror what this does is it allows you to see the car if you're backing up or parking just by leaning a little bit but in most cases driving straight you get the full field of view out of both mirrors with this Arrangement every car behind you three lanes wide should be visible in at least one mirror also if the car passes you on the right as soon as it leaves that right side door mirror it should appear in the window itself high-tech features are nice but drivers should always check their blind spots no matter what features they have and of course set their mirrors properly to see all there is to see absolutely no matter what features you have no matter what technology you have no matter what you're doing that doesn't eliminate the need to check your blind spot your mirrors have blind spots they do not show you everything so you got to check yourself you have to learn how to turn your head over the shoulder and check into your blind spot to make sure it is clear before you go we'll talk a lot about that in future classes for now let's talk a little bit more about pedal control so once again with the pedal control you're right foot is controlling both pedals right foot on the gas right foot on the brake it switches in between right you pivot your foot kind of either you pivot from the gas to the brake or breake to the gas okay when you're pivoting your foot try your best not to lift your foot off of the floor sometimes students will take their foot and they'll lift the foot off of the floor I find if people lift the their foot up that they might have really hard um acceleration or they might have really hard breaking so keep your heill planted on the floor mat and try to use your foot just the top like the um top part where your toes are um to Pivot between and using primarily you're primarily using the top part of your foot often called the ball of your foot okay um one other key tip for pedal control before I move on is squeeze down ease off I'll say it again squeeze down ease off so what you're doing is you're taking your foot you're going to squeeze down on the petal however ever you have to learn that you will also need to release some of that pressure if you don't release some of that pressure you're going to have too much acceleration or too much breaking you could jerk forward or jerk back and it's going to be a very uncomfortable um ride for you and your passengers so squeeze down ease off if you're struggling with smooth acceleration or you're struggling with smooth breaking go into a parking lot go up to 5 10 miles an hour then all the way back to zero up to 10 miles an hour then all the way back to zero up to 10 miles an hour then all the way back to to zero and just practice smooth acceleration in smooth breaking okay all right the last couple topics here let's quickly discuss hand position in most cases you want your hands positioned both of them on the steering wheel at either 9 and three or a little lower down at 8 and four some times uh people are taught higher hand positioning at 10 and two and we're not teaching that anymore and the primary reason for this is actually a safety concern let me explain with your hands and arms a little higher up at 10 and two if the airbag deploys if you crash and the airbag goes off it's going to fly towards your face okay with your hands a little higher up that airbag will cause your arms to come back into your face you'll punch yourself in the nose you'll punch yourself in the face you might break your wrist you might break your hand um you might break your nose and have more injuries that way with your hands a little lower down at 9 and 3 or even 8 and 4 if that airbag deploys if that airbag goes off now your hands are flown to the side or flown down and it's definitely still possible to get injuries but it's less likely all right with that being in mind um you may have homework assigned for today you can find that homework on page number five of the workbook on page number five if you you're a online student and you're doing a online class you do not need to do this middle one this middle one of having this form signed by a parent if you're taking online class you do not need to do this okay for everyone for all people make sure you get your permit and learn the vehicle okay learn the vehicle with that being said that's going to wrap up class for class number one today thank you
