Types of Words in Arabic

  1. Ism
  2. Fi’l
  3. Harf
    • Harf: Doesn't make sense alone; needs another word.

Focus on Ism

  • Ism is complex; includes persons, places, things, ideas, adjectives, adverbs, etc.
  • Takes three days of the program to cover Ism.
  • Four properties of Ism:
    • Status
    • Number
    • Gender
    • Type

Current Focus: Status

Ism Status

  • Forms of Status:
    • Raf’a: Subject/doer
    • Nasab: Object/receiver
    • Jarr: Possessive/related to "of"
  • How to Tell Status:
    • Ending Sounds: Un, an, in
    • Combinations: Ani, Aini, Una, Ina, etc.
    • Light vs. Heavy: Heavy is default; light is unusual and needs a reason.

Combinations and Memorization

Light and Heavy Ism

  • Light: Requires a specific reason
  • Lightening involves removing the heavy elements (i.e., nun or doubling marks).

Examples & Applications

    • Heavy implies generality with exceptions.
    • Light implies no exceptions.
