Donning and Doffing PPE and Isolation Precautions

Donning PPE

  1. Order of Donning
    • Gown
    • Mask
    • Eyewear
    • Gloves
    • Use mnemonic "GMEG" (Gown, Mask, Eyewear, Gloves) to remember the order.

Doffing PPE

  1. Order of Doffing (Dirtiest to Cleanest)
    • Gloves
    • Eyewear
    • Gown
    • Mask
  2. Perform hand hygiene after removing PPE.
  3. Avoid touching the outside of PPE as it is contaminated.

Transmission Precautions

Standard or Universal Precautions

  • Apply to all patients.
  • Hand Hygiene: Wash hands or use sanitizer.
  • Clean Gloves: Use non-sterile gloves.

Contact Precautions

  • Use when a patient has a pathogen spread through contact.
  • Examples: C. diff, MRSA, VRE, RSV, lice, scabies.
  • PPE Required: Gown and clean gloves.
  • For C. diff, wash hands with soap and water (not sanitizer).

Droplet Precautions

  • For conditions spread by respiratory droplets.
  • Examples: Influenza, pertussis, group A strep, mumps, diphtheria, rubella, bacterial meningitis.
  • PPE Required: Gown, gloves, surgical mask within 3 feet of the patient.

Airborne Precautions

  • For conditions spread by aerosolized particles.
  • Examples: Tuberculosis, varicella (chickenpox), measles.
  • Requirements:
    • Private room with negative pressure airflow.
    • PPE Required: Gown, gloves, N95 respirator.
    • If the patient leaves the room, they wear a surgical mask.

Protective Isolation

  • Protects the patient from others.
  • For immune-compromised patients, neutropenia, recent radiation.
  • Room Requirements: Private room with positive pressure airflow.
  • PPE Required: Mask, gown, gloves.
  • Restrictions:
    • No live plants or flowers.
    • Limited visitors screened for illness.
  • Patient Education:
    • Avoid crowded areas, sick contacts, sharing personal items.
    • Avoid raw foods, ensure meats are cooked thoroughly.
    • Avoid live plants and gardening.
