3 months ago I posted this video explaining how I was converting this Old Barn into my new gym well a lot has happened since then so it's time for an [Music] update now before we go inside some of you might be surprised that I'm even continuing with the gym build because of this recent video if you've not seen it I use it to make people cry by explaining how one of my dogs passed away and the continued use of my race walking clip it's going to in every video get used to it and I explained that I was no longer going to be training and exercising in order to achieve the physical Excellence that I've become known for trry all you want I don't care but not wanting to give 100% or even 80% effort to working out does not mean I've quit Fitness which some people did seem to think it did living here it might be more important than ever I need to be fit to do all the work here I'm getting older and that means I need to battle natural aging and my wife's Instagram game is killing mine right now which she reminds me of annoyingly often so this channel Remains What it always was not a fitness channel a what am I doing Channel and I'm still going to be using a gym excuse the mess come with me okay this bit is not done yet which is why the building materials are still all pared up outside so why are we starting in here so the layout of This Barn is one large room on the end there and then this large room with a dividing petition halfway down and then there's a small store room individual doors into each of the three sections and a dividing door between these two big ones when I made the first video explaining the gym plan the idea was that this was going to be the cardio Zone and then the other room down the end would be the weights area the store room just becoming a workshop garage that has changed for a few reasons this is now going to be the workshop area with a cycle storage area behind the little wall there the small store will then just be that a small store room basically a garden shed and the gym will all be in the end room because I just did not realize how many jobs there are here that require some space like this a place with all my tools some of the complete DIY projects is having a smaller gym therefore B yes and no yes because obviously the idea is that you just have a huge anything size matters but in the real world this is going to be a home gym the idea is that a few of the things we're going to be doing here might be of interest to people watching with their Home Gyms the average UK garage where many people have their gym space it's where I had mine when I started YouTube It's a small space and most people are sharing it with other garage stuff so people are going to have their squat rack right next to their pressure washer and then they're going to have their dumbbells and they can't get to the dumbbells cuz on top of those is a gaming chair that's got really cool built-in cup holders but they bought it when they were drunk cuz they thought they might get back into Counter Strike and now they're not allowed to have it in the house because apparently it's not very grown up so the space we've got this is more than three times the size of an average UK garage so yes it is bigger than average but hopefully still relatable as a home gym and also big is expensive and what spare cash we do have is really needed on things that are important like the broken tree that is in my field and has crushed the fence and now means my goats will escape If This Were the ideal size it would just suck up too much money to have renovated it let alone kit it out so what have we done in here and what's coming up well quick recap first of all the walls are Stone and lime mortar few years old the floor was a couple of lumpy concrete slabs and the roof was O B boards then some insulation and then tiles on top no heating no cooling no ventilation because it was a barn so it didn't need any when it was built because it had big drafty doors and holes everywhere and there would have been cows wandering around so we had to get the walls to what you see now we had to get the floor leveled which included fixing a big sloping section going down towards the door that robbed us of floor space and address the temperature and humidity so how do we do all of that that's coming up first this video is sponsored by hu which is handy because that broken tree is going to need a big chainsaw and they are surprisingly expensive and I don't mind working with hu because I've been using their stuff and making videos about using it for years back when nobody was watching and then I have this this is my hu shake they certainly weren't paying which is fine I didn't need a chainsaw then so I use it and I love it I don't need to Hype it up with stupid gimmicks to promote it sure black is my favorite because it's got a decent amount of protein in it which is important to me because I'm in the gym every day currently I'm still building it rather than working out in it do not get distracted it's got a bunch of vitamins and minerals which is important because my days are physically draining so I need all the help I can get how the heck am I supposed to build that and it is easy to make which is important because when I get up in the morning my alternative breakfast is across a field and sometimes it's raining I mean eggs I'm not eating my hens for breakfast I've always loved it but in my new place here it is near perfect if it could stop me banging my head on every door frame in the house it would be perfect and a tip for how I like it best mix it with crushed ice never add chocolate chips that's insanity and turn it into a Hu slush puppy a hush puppy forget breakfast take it with you in a thermos have it on the go perfect click the link in the description box and use code Mark Feb for a discount so the walls all got repointed using quick lime that is the same product that has been used for building for thousands of years it's natural it's breathable and highly dangerous do not get it anywhere near you they were then painted in a watered down slurry of that lime mortar and then painted on top with a lime wash it took both of us a very very long time doing multiple coats of each to get it where it is but the Finish is exactly what we imagined it's clean it's fresh looking but it's no different to what could have been achieved when they built this place hundreds of years ago and we got a section up the top that we left completely untouched just as a sort of reminder of what it was the floor was then dug out down here where the slope was and a step was created and I should point out everything you see us doing here in terms of DIY we watched YouTube and just went for it I'd never seen a cement mixer in real life let alone used one and then once the step was done self-leveling compound across the whole lot because we had some crazy slopes going on in here and bits of floor missing by doing that we were able to deal with the fact that we had a sort of Ridge that went across here that was 40 Mill higher than the back wall on either sides and more importantly this corner here was 10 mil lower than this corner here so this whole back section here was doing this we fixed that completely that's now a dead level which is really important bear in mind what's going to be going there in simple terms when you walk around here you can't tell that it is not perfectly level it feels very flat which it is and then on the floor sprung SE Fleck premium gym tiles now I said we wanted to watch the cost we paid a bit more for these than going with regular plain black tiles but we're very happy we did the look is superb up close it is like a blue Fleck but when you come back to a distance it doesn't look blue at all it's almost a color that's hard to describe it's simply not plain black actually it looks a little bit like the those Magic Eye pictures that if you stare out for a long time it slowly becomes three dolphins and a mermaid it's certainly much nicer than just plain black and also the surface is smoother than many tiles I've seen which makes mopping it which it does actually need at the moment it makes mopping it much much simpler and they all hook together very easy using these little locking plates they are going nowhere very very happy with these got a few spare probably going to end up I don't know lining the goat stable with those or something we do need to put a couple down in the floor space here but this floor section is getting finished off next week and then the lights LEDs provided by garage style uh these guys have worked with some of the biggest YouTubers out there so I sent them my race walking clip boom package in the post now these are something that I know some people won't like Jen for example I think they are very very cool I love the J position of the funky modern looking light units against obviously the old structure of the building I should say it's not a twers job to put all these up uh we did manage it but we almost got divorced three times and even worse nearly dropped the things we also have one minor problem that's going to get fixed we have a surge issue let make it to myself right back there with a little lemon twist it's good so when you turn LED lights on at the switch initially they draw a lot more power at that point for a fraction of a second than they require for their normal running uh what's it called uh inflow surge free flow surge high flow surge in flow there's a name for it I can't remember what it is anyway what happens is it confuses the breaker and so the fuse trips so for now I've got it wired into the wall socket ring which is fine obvious got a bigger breaker on there and next week got an electrician coming to put a new breaker on the fuse board so I can have that one working on the same light ring as well and then the biggest expense up here there are some advantages to having 800 mil thick stone walls temperature changes happen in here very very slowly when it's freezing outside it's not in here and I expect the reverse to true come summer and that actually makes it perfect for a gym but you have to be able to exert some control over the temperature right now it is warmer in here than it is outside but it is still very very cold in here so we have two independently controlled split units providing Cooling in the summer Air Conditioning Heating in the winter that will deal with the excess moisture being discharged out through the external wall Big Unit in here slightly smaller unit in the Next Room but both are oversized for the space so the hope is that they will be all we need they also run very economically once they're installed and the room is up to the right temperature and once the units are turned on next week and up and running and it's up to temperature we can get some of the jobs done in here that the current temperature was making very hard to do there are lots of little bits of trim finishing that we need to do in here around the doors around the windows we want to get some sealant around around the edging between the floor tile and the wall the tiles are up real tight to the wall for most of it but the walls Reven there are places where we need to do some filling we also want to get the line of lime where it borders the wood nice and neat and straight and finished but none of this can be done while the temperature in here is so low because all of those sealants and fillers and stuff they just don't want to set hard in this temperature interestingly we had no problem with the lime setting because lime cures through carbonization absorbing CO2 from the air but stuff that does actually need to just literally dry out doesn't so next week warm cozy in here finishing touches to be done and then kit got the two zift bikes going to have two TV screens going on the wall behind them both bikes independently communicating with a gaming computer that will be running zift at maximum specs I've just realized I'm probably going to want some mats underneath these just to stop sweat dripping onto the floor and then creeping down between the tiles these mats do sit real tight up against each other but a pool of sweat sitting there for an hour or so will not be ideal then got the ski urg on the wall which is in a position where it would not have been possible for it to be with a sloping floor but we managed to reclaim some useful floor space there and then under here is going to be storage everything from exercise clothing and Cycle Gear and trainers to electrolytes and Sports Nutrition gym kit if it's Fitness related it's going to be on this wall somehow storage type to be decided once we know what is going to be stored there then got the freak aete bench love this going to be crushing my Nordic curls with that in the summer and unlike the garage back home last home plenty of room to just pull it out and use it wherever I need to got a chin bar going going real high up on the bar here up here because I can't stand Chim bars being too low being quite tall so I'm going to get the bar up about 7'2 7' 3 and then the Highlight squat rack going here going for a unit from Extreme Fitness and the thing is an absolute Beast it's got duwel pulley couple of 120 kilo Stacks it's got a Smith machine built into it a regular squat rack can bench on it seated rows it's got a land mine attachment there's pretty much nothing it can't do that I would want to do unfortunately we just missed the last one they had in stock so now got to wait a few weeks for delivery on another but it is going to be well worth it what we need in this space here is all of our weight training requirements met by a single unit taking up a single space I'll do a full review of it when I get it but the piece of Kit going in here looks absolutely perfect for the type of training and lifting that I do I can't think it's going to have anything missing and because we sorted out the levels completely flat bags of room here yeah can't wait and then it is just decoration and bits and pieces we need to get internet run through into here the music and zift signals and the phone signal and some sort of motivational wall art if you're a regular here you'll know that I'd rather put my head through a wall than just slap traditional motivational wall art on it for me that's up there with tattooing corporate logos on yourself but something is needed not sure what ideas on a postcard please and we're going to hang a few things up in the rafters not sure what but is a very cool space up there in the void that is just crying out for something cool and funky to be dangling within it more thought required and that is it for now it's is almost ready to start featuring in some regular content going to be getting the zift bikes going and hooked up very soon so look out for me racing around on those things and obviously as soon as that Extreme Fitness squat rack unit is here going to be doing a deep dive into that and then of course just discussing how I'm going to be getting back into the shape I want to be in so an awful lot of stuff coming up along we're fixing those broken trees and whatever else this place throws at me if you want a more comprehensive look at any of the build stuff we're doing here whether it's the walls the floors the lights uh in here or indeed out on the land it all ends up on the Lewis Life channel so go check that out it will either be there or will be there soon get there hit like hit subscribe and then do the same thing to my Instagram Channel I don't put much effort into it but I need the subs yes I could just go stand in the Stream but if you could subscribe without me need to bother that' be very handy oh
