Modern art is defined as artworks produced between the 1860s to the 1970s. The birth of modernism and modern art can be traced to the Industrial Revolution. Modern art movement has lasted longer than any art movement.
The beginnings of modern painting cannot be clearly demarcated, but there is general agreement that it started in the 19th century in France. Modern artists experimented with new ways of seeing and with fresh ideas about the nature of materials and functions of art. The term is usually associated with art in which the traditions of the past have been thrown aside in a spirit of experimentation. A tendency toward abstraction is characteristic of much of modern art.
They challenged the idea that art must represent the world in reality, experimenting with expressive use of color. New techniques and non-traditional materials that are now considered the symbol of modern art. From about the 1890s on, a succession of varied movements and styles arose that are the core of modern art and that represent one of the high points of Western visual culture.
These major modern art movements include, Impressionism, Fauvism, Expressionism, Futurism, Cubism, Dada and Surrealism. Modern art is characterized by a spirit of innovation and experimentation, as artists sought to break free from traditional modes of expression and explore new forms of artistic communication. A good example of this is, Marcel Duchamp, who popularized the use of ready-made objects through his iconic artworks which he essentially created out of trash.
Most modern artists use vivid color in their works. The movements that made use of this technique the most were Fauvism and Expressionism, as artists practicing within these genres tended to utilize color in a different way to emphasize their emotions and attempt to convey. In contrast with earlier artists, who often used painting and sculpture to promote religion, revisit mythology, or celebrate the human form, modern artists often used their work to make statements.
In many cases, Artists drew inspiration from the present day rather than delving into the past. So, what's the difference between modern and contemporary art? Due to the experimental nature and overlapping themes of both modern art and contemporary art, the genres are often confused for one another. But actually the answer is really simple, you only have to distinguish with time. Modern art came before contemporary art.
It refers to art created from the 1860s up to the 1970s. As we said before, modern art is by no means current, but contemporary art means the art of the present day. However, both modern and contemporary art can be characterized as revolutionary.
