Overview of Contemporary Dance Techniques

I'm a force of your love Good day everyone! I'm Mr. Felmar Villabanco from Andres Bonifacio Campus and I'm one of the presenters for this video lesson. And today, we're going to discuss about Countdown for Amidans. Before we go to deeper understanding of the topic, let us first know the objectives of this lesson. So first, define what is contemporary dance, distinguish the type and technique of contemporary dance, and create a dance routine of contemporary dance. Now, let us define what is contemporary dance. It is an expressive dance technique which is a combination of variety of dances like modern, jazz, lyrical, Contemporary dance is a performing art that involves rhythmic body movement within a given space and choreographed. based on a musical beat. So contemporary dance starts from pulling techniques from other dances such as jazz and classical ballet but it breaks away the strict construction of that dance. We have to remember always that classical ballet dancers are mostly focusing on the perfections of their posture, the perfections of their movement, and the perfections of their execution while the contemporary dancers are the exact opposite of that. So they are mostly focusing on to their personal expressions. Now let's move on to the history of contemporary dance. Contemporary dance emerged on the 1950s out of the constraints of classical ballet. When we say constraints, these are the restrictions of classical ballet. So while classical ballet dancers are forgetting that kind of restrictions, the contemporary dancers are embracing that. Specifically, Martha Graham. So Martha Graham decided to rebel. against the rigid style of ballet and perform movement that was fair and involved using the body and gravity So just like what I said earlier, ballet dancers or classical ballet dancers are mostly focusing on the perfection of their posture, movement, and execution They don't want that, so she started inventing dance that has fair steps Okay, because Martha Graham has ordered us to be a great dancer we don't need to focus on the technique so we need to focus on the passion in dancing so here's a picture of contemporary dance in the past she started to use costumes that were away from traditional lyrical dresses and ballet tutus so tulad nga nagsabi ko kanina ayaw talaga ni Martha Graham ng muna ganong style so she started inventing costumes na sobrang layo doon sa classical ballet Now, how about we take a look at our country's history of contemporary dance? So, after World War II, Filipinos freed from American domination, searched in creativity. So, as we all know, after World War II, doon nag-start tayong palayarin ng mga Amerikan. And yung mga Filipinos nag-search yung creativity natin, and doon tayo na naging aware sa mga different dances all around the world. Schools like FPU, PNU and PWU formed the Barangay Polk Dance Troupe. So Barangay Polk Dance Troupe is the longest running dance troupe here in the Philippines. Next we have Rosa Guginko staged in Noli Dance Suit and other ballets. So just to give you another information about Rosa Guginko, she was also a Filipino national artist in creative dance. And next we have Reminisce Nuteza for abstract ballets were performed by Manila Ballet Company. So Remedios Leoteza is one of the famous ballet performer and choreographer here in the Philippines. And just to give you another information about Remedios Leoteza, at the age of three, Remedios Leoteza went to Spain. And at the age of eight, he started learning ballet. And when he returned to the Philippines, he became a famous choreographer and performer of ballet. And one of her choreography performed by Manila Ballet Company. Do you know who are the most recognized artists here in the Philippines? Well, let me introduce you to the big three in Philippine dance, starting with Alice Reyes. So Alice Reyes, she received the highest award in arts, the National Artist of the Philippines. That is the highest award that you can get if you are a dancer. Next, the name Alice Reyes has become a significant part of Philippine dance parlance. As a dancer, choreographer, teacher and director she has made a lasting impact on the development and promotion of contemporary dance here in the philippines so alice reyes is one of the famous choreographer here in the philippines then and tuladganang sabi kanina talagang sobrang dami niyang profession such as director teacher and choreographer next we have lisa teresita pacheco mikuha elizalde or lisa mikuha elizalde for short So she remains the country's most recognizable face in the world of ballet. I'll tell you why later. And she founded her own ballet company, Ballet Manila, and became the first foreign soloist to ever join the Quirog Ballet, which is the world's leading company. So just like what I said earlier, why is Liza Elizalde the most recognizable face in the world of ballet, because she's the only Filipino who is recognized? who performed at Kirov Ballet. Kirov Ballet is one of the best performance or prestigious ballet performance in the world. And luckily, because of the technique and style of dancing of Elizalde, she was chosen. And don't get it wrong, Kirov Ballet is the name of the performance and Mariinsky Ballet Company is responsible for that kind of performance. And the form of the... Yung Mariinsky Ballet during 18th century and located specifically at St. Petersburg, Russia. And last but not the least, we have Douglas Ngeras. Okay, so for sure, aware kayo kay Douglas Ngeras. So Douglas Ngeras is a highly recognized in Philippine mainstream media, raising numerous major dance festival and dance competition as an esteemed judge. So he is... also famous for his jazz metanoia so Douglas Nieras, like what I said earlier, we often see him on TV especially with Ryan Peabjong. So those two are very important in dance industry because when there's play or theater play in a place, Ryan Peabjong is responsible for the sound and music while Douglas Nieras is responsible for the dance choreography. Good day everyone, I'm Mr. Renzon Roncalis. So now let's try to distinguish modern and contemporary, as both dances have similar styles that does not follow a set of rules. Many people think that modern and contemporary dances are the same thing. They are actually two different styles. The primary difference is that modern dance is codified, which means that it has the common movements that are set in a particular style and it has the specific needs and expectations. While contemporary dance is not codified and encompasses different styles, it is expressive and can include moves from other genres and it is more on one. Now class, let's define first modern dance. So what is modern dance? Modern dance class is a specific style of dance that is a free form and it stems from the core or torso of the body and uses elements like contract release, floorboard, fall and recovery, and also improvisation. Modern class, this style of dance challenge the art and philosophy of times. and it was inclusive of other cultures. Modern dance is about to express your own inner feelings on stage, incorporates techniques while encouraging you to experiment with some moves of your own. Second, we have the contemporary dance. Neblus contemporary dance is a collaborative style that includes modern, jazz, ballet, and hip-hop elements. Contemporary dance has a lot in common with modern dance and we have their roots and the same foundations. Contemporary combines elements across different genres including classical ballet, jazz, lyrical and modern dance. Actually class the goal of this dance is to connect the body with the mind through a fluid movement. This is style of dance We focused more on expression and emotion than on formal techniques. When it comes to different style or difference of style, modern dance involves adherence to technique and style, uses traditional or popular music, and steps with heavy themes. Contemporary on the other hand tends to be intricate and physical, and the dancers change levels and directions quickly, and some lose lean, and meddle with abstract concepts. images or emotional extremes. But today class contemporary dance is a mixture of different styles and choreographers take moves from all different tracks. So some dancers base the dance on a character, a theme or story and they all may add their own unique style to their dance. And now class let's proceed to the technique used in contemporary dance. So starting with the Cunningham technique. Now Cunningham technique it is named after teacher and choreographer Mercy Cunningham. So the technique emphasizes clarity of form, coordination of torso and leg work, rhythmic accuracy, spatial awareness and virtuosity. A Cunningham technique class is a rigorous 90-minute class that includes a thorough 45-minute walk followed by a series of diverse movements and phrases. So Cunningham uses the idea of the body's own light, light of energy to promote easy, natural and movement. So class, let's watch together the video clips example of Cunningham technique. Next is the Graham Technique, named after Martha Graham. So Graham Technique is characterized by foreboding and the use of abdominal and pelvic contractions. So this style is very grounded and the technique visibly contrary to the self-like airborne ideals of ballet. It also focuses on the use of contraction, release, fall and recovery. So this is the example video you will see of Graham technique. The third one we have the Limon Technique named after Jose León. Limon Technique uses the feeling of weight and heavy energy in the body and movement is instigated using grip to lift and swings through the body to create and halt movement. It also feels very nice to perform. It involves exploring the use of energy in relation to gravity. and working with weight in terms of the fall rebound recovery and suspension. Then the fourth one we have the release technique. So, Ecclesiastes is a release technique which places emphasis on minimizing tensions in the search for clarity and fluidity and efficient use of energy and breath. So release technique is focused on the principles of ease of movement and fluidity. Dancers learn to minimize tensions in the valley through a three-double movement. Okay, so this is the example of release technique. Lastly is Improvation Technique, focuses on the investigations of movement and its relations to performance. Another type of Improvation is Contact Improvation, describes a two-intense form characterized by weight exchange, fluid movement, and match. Partners improvise using the natural movement of the body. So this is the example of video clips of those techniques. Good day, I'm Miss Cruz. Now that we know the different techniques used in contemporary dance, let's find out what are the types of contemporary dance. Contemporary ballet is a genre of dance that incorporates elements of both classical ballet and modern dance. Contemporary, by definition, means happening or existing at the same time, and it is often used to describe works. that are created in the present or recent past. Contemporary ballet represent a departure from the restraining of traditional classical ballet techniques. And traditional rules are composition. Here is an example of contemporary ballet dance. Dance improvisation. Commonly known as Evo, this is the process of creating movement without pre-planning any steps or choreography. Pre-movement is a great way to have fun, relieve any stress, and express new ways to move and know the moves. Improvisation can lead to a better choreography and make the creation of choreography easier. Improvisation is not only about creating, New Move Back is also defined as freeing the body from habitual movement, hunger. Did you know that dancer and singer Michael Jackson combined improvisation in both of those definitions? Insisting that he had an interest in performing a dance in villages only if he could only do it a new way each time. So here is the sample of Dance in Pool. Interpretative dance. This type of dance encourages the dancer to express his or herself with or without music. The dance may express a story or simply emotions. Interpretative dance is a family of modern dance, style that begins around 1900s with a historical dance. Interpretive dance allows for more expression work of the dancer, whereas more traditional dance requires straight adherence to choreography. So here is the example of interpretive dance. Lyrical dance is the dance style that embodies various aspects of ballet, jazz, acrobatics, and boulder dance. It is performed to music with lyrics so that it inspires expression of strong emotions. the choreographer feels from the lyrics of the song. This style is usually danced at a faster pace than ballet. Interpretative dance is similar to lyrical dance in that it expresses It expresses strong emotion associated with a piece of music or song. Lyrical dance comes from a heavy use of the tics that come from jazz and ballet, yet interpretative dance, there is much more space for expressions and interpretations on the part of the dancer than in more traditional dancing. So here is the example of Miracle Dance. And now, let's talk about the 8 elements of contemporary dance. The theme. Most basic elements of the dance. It may not mean the dance is the motive or the idea. What inspires you to create the dance and what it is about. What is it based on? All of that is theme in dance. The inspiration is the theme. Next, design. Pattern of movement in time and space. Just as music can enhance the mood of the dance and influence the way in which the spectator interprets its dramatic content. Movement. The bodily action of the dancer that includes his step. The movement in dance such as locomotors and non-locomotors. Locomotor movements in which the body travels from one location to another and non-locomotor movements that occur in the body parts or the whole body and do not cause the body to travel to another space. Technique The skills of movement executed by the dancer. It's the basics of all fundamentals of dance, from holding your body to correct your wild core quality, to executing skills properly in a for example canning ham graham and limon technique next is music the auditory background to which the dancer moves dance needs music to set the mood drop the beat and create the motivation needed to start moving music has the ability to make us feel a certain way which is why it plays such an immense role in dance. Different styles of music create various types of beat, which all corresponds to the specific dance types. Costume and body paraphernalia. Properties formed by the dancer that helps reflect the message, customs, and beliefs. It's like attraction and adversity. Your audience will fall for the way you carry yourself and be pleased to speak and see what's beautiful. Performer care offer, then you need to get your crowd attention the moment you step on the stage. Choreography, the figures and step in dancing that enables the dancer to perform in a organized manner. You can use the word choreography to mean dance or ballet. But its specific meaning is the notation a choreographer makes on a paper as she plans out the complex movement and step made by the dancer. Scenery, the background or setting where the dancer is performed to make it more realistic and enriching. It enhances the mood and the dance. Good day, I'm Miss Marsa Dorano. And now for the last part of our lesson, let's get familiar with the contemporary dance vocabulary. First, we have parallel full position. The feet may be side by side, apart the distance of the center of the hips sockets, or in a wide position. Derived from classical ballet, the turnout positions are both classical positions in jazz dance class. So here are the examples. Next is Demi Points. Describe the position of the feet where the dancer has their full body weight on the balls of the feet at half-pointed. This not only ensures clean technique and nine but also enforces a strong ankle and prevent the dancer from injury. So here are the example. Contraction, made popular by Martha Graham and found in Graham's technique. Contraction focuses on the mobility of the torso. It can be taken standing or sitting. This movement should take place with the seats, both staying on the floor, and mimic what happens when you laugh or cry. Here's our example. Release emphasizes on releasing the muscular tension in order to achieve the most efficient expanse of energy. As the body recovers from contraction, the release strengthens the back and takes the body to its starting position. Here's our next example. Roll down is another exercise for the spine. This involves engaging the stomach, muscle, and trying to visualize each vertebrae moving one at a time. Here are the examples. Jump. Jump is a conglomerate of a number of forms. that are about innovation to focusing on traveling across the space. Depending on the teacher, jam can be taken from other styles such as ballet, jazz, and compilero. Here are the examples. Support or balance. Calipurari dances tries to give each dancer equality. So this often turns into support with an equal sharing of weight. Good balance is necessary in order to make smooth and complete moves. Here are the examples. Contemporary dance gives several benefits on the body and mind. It is an aerobic training that allows you to increase power and endurance and improve breathing. It develops physical skills and training habits. that can help them maintain better health throughout the lives of students who love to dance with fun. It also gains poise, confidence, emotional stability, and creative thinking skills that will help throughout academic and professional careers. class choose one time of paniparali dance and make at two to three minutes students should wear a proper costume for this activity so this is our rubrics to how to grade your activity once again i am mr philia banco mr on callas miss cruz and mr thank you for listening
