How to Clean a Horse Stall

Introduction

  • Essential part of horse ownership
  • Question: Does your horse live out in the field 24/7 or stay in the stable sometimes?
    • Personal preference: horses live out 24/7 unless injured or weather is bad

Supplies Needed

  1. Wheelbarrow or Muck Bucket
    • For transporting dirty shavings to the manure pile
  2. Pitchfork
    • For picking up poop and dirty shavings
  3. Shovel
    • For scraping bad and gross shavings, especially where the horse peed
  4. Broom
    • For sweeping away shavings from the door and food areas
  5. Bedding for Horses
    • Type of bedding can vary (shavings, straw, pellets)
    • Important for horse comfort and health, especially for those with breathing issues

Cleaning Process

Initial Steps

  • Identify poop and pee spots in the stall
  • Remove all poop piles first
    • Shake pitchfork to save good shavings

Handling Pee Spots

  • Depends on type of flooring
    • Rubber Mats: Remove peed-on shavings, mats absorb moisture
    • Dirt Floors: Allow ground to dry before adding new shavings
  • Remove clean shavings from around the pee spot
  • Scrape and remove wet shavings
  • Cover cleaned areas with clean shavings

Final Steps

  • Look for smaller pieces of poop missed earlier
  • Sweep doorway, under food bucket, and hay area
    • Prevents inhalation of dust or shavings

Adding Bedding

  • Reasons for bedding:
    1. Absorbs horse's pee
    2. Provides comfort for standing and laying down
  • Evaluate if a stall needs additional shavings
    • Ensure an even layer for comfort and absorption

Disposal

  • Dump wheelbarrow in manure pile
  • Importance of muck boots for easy maneuvering
  • Keep manure pile away from the barn to minimize flies and bugs
