Counting in Spanish

Introduction

  • In today's lesson, we will learn the numbers in Spanish.
  • By the end, you will be able to count as high as you want.
  • Focus on understanding and practicing the numbers, not just memorizing them as a pattern.

Numbers 0-10

  • 0 (Zero): cero
  • 1 (One): uno
  • 2 (Two): dos (Push tongue forward with 'd')
  • 3 (Three): tres
  • 4 (Four): cuatro (CU makes 'choi' sound)
  • 5 (Five): cinco

Tip

  • Practice saying the numbers out of order to ensure understanding, not just memorizing a sequence.

Numbers 11-15 (Ending in -ce)

  • 11 (Eleven): once
  • 12 (Twelve): doce
  • 13 (Thirteen): trece
  • 14 (Fourteen): catorce
  • 15 (Fifteen): quince (QU sounds like 'K')

Numbers 16-19 (Combining Dieci/Dieci + ones digit)

  • 16 (Sixteen): dieciséis
  • 17 (Seventeen): diecisiete
  • 18 (Eighteen): dieciocho
  • 19 (Nineteen): diecinueve

Number 20 and 21-29 (Using Veinte as base)

  • 20 (Twenty): veinte
  • Numbers 21-29: Combine 'veinte' and the singular number, changing 'e' to 'i':
    • 21 (Twenty-One): veintiuno
    • 22 (Twenty-Two): veintidós
    • 23 (Twenty-Three): veintitrés

  • 94: noventa y cuatro

Hundreds

  • 100 (One Hundred): cien (cién when just 100)
  • For numbers like 101 or 120, use ciento:
    • 101: ciento uno
    • 120: ciento veinte

Hundreds in Order

  • 200: doscientos
  • 300: trescientos
  • 400: cuatrocientos
  • 500: quinientos (follows Latin root QU)
  • 600: seiscientos
  • 700: setecientos (drops the 'i')
  • 800: ochocientos
  • 900: novecientos (follows Latin root)

Thousands and Millions

  • 1000 (One Thousand): mil
  • 1,000,000 (One Million): millón
  • Date example: 1993 = mil novecientos noventa y tres
