Guidelines for Buying a Used Catamaran

[Music] have I gone mad F so you're entirely Bonkers but I'll tell you a secret all the best people off ah ladies and gents the wonderful world of multi-holes specifically catamarans today we're going to start taking a look at the used catamaran Market tell you what I think go through what I'm looking for personally when we shopping to buy ourselves a new to you us fancy Dancy used catamaran now let's all be honest love them hate them the reality is catamarans are far far superior to monoh holes when it comes to comfort as far as living aboard now you can go out there you can look at a bunch of sailing channels we'll use sailing parlay Revival as an example these modern-day production cats can pretty much get you anywhere in the world that you want to go except maybe a bali or something because those are uh those are pretty cheap little catamarans very very pretty nice Coastal Cruiser Island Hopper not so sure I'd be uh ripping around the world on a bali catamaran but outside of that your modern production boats you know the lagoons the leopards the fountain P things like that those bad boys are going to get you pretty much anywhere in the world that you need to go now when we're looking at used caterans we're not going to really be looking at the length of the waterline versus length overall like we do with monoh holes catamarans are a bit different as far as far as their usable space and it's split up pretty drastic so let's go take a gander at the used catamaran Market I'm going to walk you through where I think it's going what it's doing and where to find the best deals so here we are we're on the wonderful world of Yachts gosh I think I spend more time on this website than I do uh with my own family that's actually true for sure sad State of Affairs all right so when it comes to camars all I'm doing 75k and above budget the reason for this trying to eliminate a bunch of backyard built trash cans that's all I'm trying to do now catamarans are more expensive than monoh holes for a decent catamaran but you get a lot of benefits with that and uh if you can afford them in reality everybody goes to a catamaran look at all the fancy Dancy sailing channels the second they make it what do they do they get themselves a used catamaran but we need to be smart with catamarans just like we do with monoh holes we cannot be buying both that are 30 and 40 years old you're going to encounter a dramatic increase in running cost on a catamaran now with monoh holes of course yes the older The Vessel the higher the running cost but with catamarans it's even worse because catamarans in general all things equal always cost more to run than a monoh Hool does so we have to literally just eliminate any boat that's going to be a fixer upper unless that's your plan if your PL to be a famous YouTuber and you want to fix a boat in tropical locations right on man go do your thing I think it's stupid uh but if that's what you want to do go do it my man uh I will not be doing it so these are getting wiped out no 89s no 96s as a matter of fact let's just change this we're going to put the year in 2000 at minimum Booyah there we go now right off the bat we got the Tomcat 9.7 located in Panama this is somewhat comparable to like a Gemini 105 MC um this is more of a it's not really a boat I'm I would ever go after this is a smaller catamaran meant to fit in a normal slip and that's all fine they're just not built nearly as well as some other boats on the market such as this very very next one the Gemini 105 MC now in my opinion this is your introduction to catamarans it's going to cost you just under 100k on average somewhere 75 and 100K range now there is the Gemini 105 and the 105 MC what's the difference Chris well the 105 MC has a mast that's about a foot taller and with that comes an increased sail area like 300 ft larger than the 105 and your Headroom right in here it's a little bit taller than it is on the 105 that's the basic differences not all of them but that's the basics and then we have an idiot broker in Florida that did three three pictures if you own this boat and this is your broker fire them right now call yacht Masters call them up fire them because if they will not put any effort into your listing no one's going to buy your boat that's why it's sitting here just rotten look at this things just falling apart and let's go down here see if you told me anything oh you copy and pasted awesome great job idiot so the 105 MC would be like I said my introduction to a budget Catan this is going to be a great little Coastal Cruiser Island Hopper Now by Coastal cruising I don't mean staying 2 miles from Shore all the time you can rip this bad boy offshore 100 miles no problem I wouldn't suggest crossing the Atlantic Ocean in the darn thing but yeah you can get 100 miles offshore 50 Mi offshore do all the coastal cruising all the Caribbean things like that but all the same things apply this boat's over 20 years old so 20 years old with any sailboat you have to have had a major refit so when we're going through these this is what we want to see we want to see a broker that number one lists out the things that were done and we want to see some pretty big things done to the boat because it's 20 years old so this one I got uh a new main sale New jib 2022 got a new dinghy awesome got a useless 6 horsepower outboard but hey it's fairly new air conditioning I don't know when that was got a generator so we have some things uh screecher saale track and rigging sale needs repair just go fix it idiot um three AGM batteries so yeah this isn't any kind of a wow look at all this awesomeness but this is a very budget in my opinion affordable way to get into Coastal cruising island hopping in the Caribbean now before I go further I've gone over this before but I'm going to show you again everybody thinks in the world is sailing everybody's got these delusions of grandeur that you need to be going offshore and Crossing oceans and doing all this nonsense now if we look at any YouTuber none of them do that they do one big trip then they're derping off for a year Coastal cruising and island hopping once they make it big they get themselves a catamaran the same thing continues let me show you something really quick right now to show you what you can actually achieve Coastal cruising and island hopping so here we are we've got a map of the world a map of the globe so I live in Puerto Rico now let's say I wanted to Coastal Cruise an island hop my way into Paradise check this out San Juan Bay Marina boom this is all Coastal cruising keep this in mind I can hit the Spanish Virgin Islands bingo bango bongo can then hit the US Virgin Island can hit the BV s Gilla St kids Stiga monzerat guadaloop again Coastal cruising Dominica martinque St Lucia Barbados St Vincent the Grenadines Granada all the way down to Trinidad and Tobago then I can follow this little Coastline here I can go all the way over the ABC islands Aruba jaming and jam it now from here we've done about, 1300 nautical miles I could Loop right back around I could just go to the opposite side or I could do my one passage right so if I went from here in Aruba over to Jamaica I've got about 500 nautical miles now in my opinion a Gemini 105 MC can absolutely make that trip is it going to be enjoyable H not going to be the greatest thing in the world you need to pick your weather window but this is just Coastal cruising now if you didn't want to do the big long offshore one Coastal cruising and island hopping you can keep on cruising man hit over here go to Panama Costa Rica Nicaragua go up you can jump off from here going to save yourself a little bit of mileage you make the pop right on over to Jamaica from Jamaica holy Shenanigans you can go over here hit the Dominican Republic bingo bango go back here I can go right through the Mona passage up then I can hit Turks and caos up through the Exumas the Bahamas yea look at us I can jam over to the Florida Keys from there I can go all the way up the coastal east coast of the United States and this is all just Coastal cruising man if you were to do this trip you'd have out sailed 99% of YouTubers it's hilarious I mean you could take yourself an easy 6 s 8 9 10,000 nautical miles just Coastal cruising and island hopping easy cheesy I mean you could spend the rest of your life doing a trip like this and you would there's just the point being there is no reason so this right here this is 6,000 NAU miles roughly so in Atlantic Crossing all that is Bermuda over to the azors BAM it's got 2,300 nautical miles right there but then from there it's just Coastal cruising you're jamming out so you don't need an ocean Crossing vessel to do the coastal cruising if you want to do the Caribbean Jamaica Panama Costa Rica East Coast United States cool buy a boat in the Caribbean and do some Coastal cruising you don't need some offshore blue water cruiser to go 10,000 nautical miles and visit a bazillion different countries if you want to do it over here the same thing just buy your boat in Croatia over here Bingo and then for from Croatia Coastal cruise to your heart's content visit Rome Spain Madrid France Netherlands it's all Coastal cruising and island hopping you don't have to cross an ocean to enjoy the world of sailing so let's get over the we need Blue Water Boats blue water boat that's just a term for an antique piece of shitake mushrooms that somebody's trying to get too much money to point being the Gemini 105 MC it would totally handle that no problem on either side now you wouldn't want to cross the Atlantic in it um but it could handle that trip and you can pick up the Gemini 105 MC for less than 100 Grand look at this you know and you're going to get a boat it's going to be right around 20 years old so we've got to look into it we got to make sure that uh you know somebody's done some things here new blah blah blah is this one I just went over I feel like it is um yeah we got merland Florida Dominican Republic again these are backyard built caterans these Crowther Catans um another Gemini so you're going to find a whole bunch of Gemini 105 MC's in the 100K or less range my opinion that's going to be the best cat around to get for 100k or less easy solved all your problems you're welcome super chats are appreciated uh pdq's backyard built nonsense warms no thanks um you know it's uh first of all this broker you watermarked your photos as if someone's going to steal your photos your photos are dog nobody's stealing them and this warm is built like a train wreck uh it's a disaster so let's not waste so buch of time with shitake boats okay keep on going now we're not buying hyped up Hobie catr that's what this is It's a hyped up Hobie Yep this owner is going to get mad at me but that's what it is a hyped up Hobie it's a lightweight racing catamaran not at all what we're after then if we keep on moving along got an Endeavor catamaran very very cheap catamaran again the 105 MC in my opinion going to be far far better than this but that doesn't mean that this is bad all things considered um you know you'd have to take a look at both of them and kind of see this is just this is a very awkwardly laid out cataman in my opinion Endeavor did not do a good job with their user friendliness on these budget catamarans that they were building for a while it's not um you know the did a good job with this being open which is very very nice but outside of that no I wouldn't buy this catran maybe for like 50k but that's about it so the best bang for the buck like I said 100K NE is going to be one of these Gemini 105 MC's I have nothing to do with any of these idiot Brokers so if it was me I'd just be trying to get the newest one possible with the most stuff on it boom solves all your problems get the newest one possible with the most things this looks like great shape this would be amazing just kicking back in the Caribbean the Bahamas oh man be living your best life out there uh this somebody's put some money into this one this this dingy however was not uh somebody did not splurge on it looks like somebody's repainted this and they taped off all their instruments I mean you could have removed the tape for the photo oddly enough it wouldn't have been that difficult to do but this boat looks nice looks like she might be in good shape need no need to compromise preliminary list oh uh copy and paste third owner okay so we got some stuff here so again over on my members area which you reach through Patron $10 a month I have a whole pamplet of questions to ask all you'd want to do is crack up my spreadsheet compare all these Gemini 105 MC's put them all on the spreadsheet compare them all get the one that best works for you like I said 100K or under the 105 MC that's the catamaran I'm choosing that's it not doing any of these other ones Charter cash shakar no not doing it the moing 3800 this is like an old this is like the uh see this bad boy will load let's load one two we're loading no we're not wow won't load this is basically a leopard's Lagoon 40 uh or 38 just a very very old one um it of course doesn't want to load at all so I guess we're just going to keep on moving until that decides to load and we got it to load boom like I said this is basically like a leopard 38 Lagoon 38 is what this is now this is just an older one this one's in Trinidad Tobago I'm going to go out on limb and assume this is thrash now if you could get this if all things were equal uh I would probably take this over the Gemini 105 MC not this particular boat but this Mak model uh the moing 38 but this one you know it's 25 years old it would have needed a major major refit um which it has not had because it's in a charter company or was a charter uh so it's going to be very very basic is my assumption but it's probably worth calling as usual they've given us nothing but this isn't you know not the end of the world we'd really really have to dig in and see how much money is it going to get us how much money is it going to cost us to get this bad boy up to speed for the next let's say 10 years you know so we don't want to be spending a bunch of money but I do like those moing 38s definitely worth a call in the budget Catan scenario now here's a dumpster went over this in my last monoh hole video actually it's a great price but this is an absolute train wreck it was picked up after the hurricane hurricane herma uh somebody was going to fix it they never got around to it and it's just been sitting and rotting so we don't want to do that now we got a sea wind 1,000 again there's better boats on the market we don't need to spend a lot of time on these why is everything taking 10 years to load um you could compare it I mean it's comparable to like the uh moing 38 and the Gemini 105 MC I mean if you loved something about this sea wind then maybe it's worth taking a look or you know if you were in New South Wales that can make sense oh my gosh it finally decided to load here we go boom now what you're going to notice most of these catar are pretty similar but as you can see these guys have kind of derped it up they did their salot like their I don't know like their seating area is kind of outside it makes the interior more like a bunk house type of a thing um not really what I'm going for so again no just no that's not going to it's not going to work for me boom got some Geminis another Endeavor again these Endeavors are not uh they just kind of derped them when it came to user friendliness on these things uh this guy is a big fan of his exterior photos though I mean he's wow he's a big big fan he's like oh my God I went to the Caribbean this looks like cheap dog um versus expensive dog not sure what the difference in appearance is but this boat looks like a disaster uh which is probably why there's so many exterior photos and not very many interior photos all done with this boat Endeavor don't like those cats anyway uh the 105 MC again main cat this one's you see how quick we jump up to price you know we're already all the way at 150 is this bow worth 50k more than uh 105 MC Gemini absolutely not so You' be better off buying the Gemini 105 MC put 45 Grand into it you'll have a much much better boat same thing with the maximum and you see how quick we're going up in price in reality in my humble opinion 200k or less you're looking at a Gemini 105 MC a lagoon 380 uh you could do the Gemini Legacy 35 which are phenomenal um and that's a the moing 38 as well uh and the leopard 38 uh are going to be your makes and models in my opinion for the 200k or less now the newest one you'll be able to get always going to be the 35 Legacy 35 legacy's got more head room and everything uh then the 105 MC it's laid out a lot different a lot different changed in this model when we compare it to the uh the 105 MC so we got more Headroom a more open cockpit nice open Salon a lot more head room when you walk inside the vessel these are fantastic and so the newest one you'll be able to get for around 200k will be the 35 Legacy you can go and you can get like a 2000 2003 Lagoon 38 moing 38 leopard 38 something like that occasionally um but again you're going to be buying a boat that's 16 years older so you'd really have to compare them as far as what's going to fit your needs the most is it going to be you know because the legacy is going to cost you a heck of a lot less money in the long run cuz it's so much newer so for your first 10 years the legacy is going to save you a ton of money compared to like a 2,000 boat and another 10 years from now it's going to be a 35-year-old boat uh whereas this boat's going to be 20 years old so there's a big big difference there uh really if it was me I'm looking at the 105 MC if I'm 100K or less I'm looking at the 35 Legacy if I'm 200k or less unless some newer 38 popped up like a lagoon 38 or something like that and then from this price point we drop into the depths of uh the Twilight Zone and Never Never Land because people just become absurd so here's something to consider now we have a 2003 Lagoon 38 uh see if this bad boy wants to load nothing wants to load today there it is all right so 2003 so we're still 21 years old that's a problem so you'd really have to get on this boat in like a 35 Legacy and see now this boat because of its age it's going to cost you more in your first 5 years of ownership getting it up to speed unless by some miracle these people have done some amazing things based on the limited trash can photos I'm guessing no uh we read through this nope copy and paste get six batteries change your batteries the you so we got some stuff we got solar water maker tender so we have some things here um new batteries 2023 yeah so these guys have actually done quite a bit to this boat now it's located in martinque great place to buy a boat one of my favorite islands and this boat looks to be in really really good shape and based off of what they've posted they've done quite a bit so your comparable would be that 2016 Legacy 35 you're going to have to get on them both and see which one suits your needs the best if this one has had enough done to it then this might be the way to go you know if you could pick up that boat for 160 155 I mean it's a pretty solid solid solid deal but again that Legacy you might able to get for 150 so there's a lot to consider really um you know then we get the power bows for some reason here's another 35 Legacy but see what I mean this is going to be your comparable boat uh you're just going to get one that's a decade newer which is a pretty big deal in the world of boats because in that decade there's a lot of replacing that needs to be done um I mean this to me you know it's tough um what 13 yeah so 10 years newer see what these see now these guys should have done some stuff to this too just based off of the year but this is all copy and pasted uh stock nonsense okay yeah you got to call gosh I wish these guys would just give us more info but in reality best bang for the buck best budget catamaran 200k or less the 35 Legacy the Gemini 105 MC possibly a lagoon 380 uh we got a NCH 40 here now this one's in Croatia uh nchs are not horrible they're not phenomenal um but again wouldn't be bad at all for Coastal cruising island hopping and the only way that this boat would make sense is if you were in Croatia if you're over here in the United States you wouldn't be buying a boat in Croatia now I don't like this this is more like an enclosed monoh hole type of a cockpit so for me the reason I'm going to get myself a Catan is for the wide open cockpit along with other things but so this one's going to get instantly xed out for me personally does that mean it's going to be xed out for you no this might be your jam you know you can trip down this stair right here smack your face right on the door if you're lucky you can trip right into the bathroom and break your ankle right here on the way or when you're coming down and you're always trying to tuck right in here you come down you go to step in just wait till you miss and you roll your ankle right there I hear ankle Replacements are cheap in the Dominican Republic but who knows uh yeah I hate this gosh darn boat uh it's just laid out they're just not laid out very well so you know you're not going to get much more room there's a lot of wasted space on the uh NCH 40s now we've got a 2008 uh leopard Lagoon 380 see if they can get this bad boy to load I don't know what in the world's going on with people not loading uh whoa you gave me one photo you mother guy gave me one photo idiot uh then we got the fountaine POU this is worth looking at because of year 36f Footers so again I mean you got quite a bit of comparables here lots to choose from in the budget catran Market uh the cheapest probably being the Gemini 35 Legacy if you go even cheaper you got the 105 MC then you get up into these 36 38t pountain be lagoons leopards Moorings things like that any of them are going to be fine choose the one that is best for you for myself because I've done so much sailing and I know what time does to boats I'm going to try to get as new as I can and if that means that I have to go with a Gemini Legacy 35 then that's what I'm getting I love those boats anyway uh you're going to feel like you get a little more room with something like this fountaine Pau just cuz it sits higher um but really running cost overall best bang for the buck Gemini Legacy 35 200k and under for your budget catamaran in my humble opinion is going to be the way to go these are ones Lagoon 380s and stuff like that you got to take a look at now we got the F Pau 40s but again we're talking a 21-year-old boat 2010 leopard 38 hey that's not that bad now this might be comparable you could take a gander at this we've only got a five or a six year difference versus 10 or 15 years so that's much much better but you're really going to have to Compare Quality uh and that one you would obviously buy over there not over over here here we go leopard see you probably pick up this one for 200k you know if you can get into a leopard 38 2010 2011 for that 175k range then sure could be comparable to the Legacy 35 but those my friends ladies and gents those are my picks for the best budget camans Coastal cruising island hopping remember you can do tens and tens of
