RBT Initial Competency Assessment Packet

Overview

  • All RBT applicants must demonstrate competence in tasks listed in the Initial Competency Assessment to qualify for RBT certification.

Qualified Assessor(s) and Relationship Expectations

  • Responsible Assessor:
    • Must be a BACB certificant (BCaBA or BCBA) with 8-hour supervision training.
    • Employed at the same organization or have a contractual relationship with the applicant and client(s).
    • Ensures compliance with assessment requirements and quality standards.
    • Signs the Initial Competency Assessment and keeps records for all assessments.
    • May delegate assessment tasks to assistant assessors who are observed to be proficient.
  • Assistant Assessor(s):
    • Need not be BACB certified but must be proficient.
    • The responsible assessor is accountable for their activities.
    • Must not be related to, subordinate to, or employed by the applicant.
  • Relationship Expectations:
    • All parties involved must be employed at or contracted with the same organization providing client services.

Timing

  • Must be completed after the 40-hour training.
  • Cannot be completed more than 90 days before the RBT certification application submission.

Structure

  • Can be conducted in one or more sessions.
  • Can be conducted in person, via the internet, or through recorded videos.

Administration

  • Assessor provides opportunities for applicants to perform tasks and evaluates competence.
  • Assessment methods:
    • With a Client: Observing task performance with a client.
    • Role-Play: Simulated client interactions.
    • Interview: Live discussion to explain concepts.
  • Corrective feedback is provided until competence is demonstrated.
  • No corrective feedback on the final assessment.

Documentation

  • Assessor initials tasks when performed competently and notes assessment type.
  • Completed assessments are required for certification application.
  • Documentation must be retained for at least 7 years.

Responsible Assessor Checklist

Instructions

  • Checklist for the responsible assessor to review before overseeing an assessment:
    • Active BCaBA or BCBA certification.
    • Proper employment or contractual relationship with applicants and clients.
    • Completion of 8-hour supervision training.
    • Understanding of Initial Competency Assessment requirements.
    • Suitability of clients for the assessment.
    • Verification of applicants' completion of 40-hour training.
    • System for tracking assessment records.

Oversight and Evaluation of Assistant Assessors

  • Criteria and processes for evaluating and preparing assistant assessors.
  • Materials to ensure high-quality assessment.
  • Systems for procedural integrity and consistency.
  • Ensures assistant assessors are not related to or employed by applicants.

RBT Initial Competency Assessment: Form

Applicant Information

  • Requires details like applicant name, BACB ID, and employment information.

Task Sections

  • Measurement (Tasks 1-3):
    • Continuous measurement, discontinuous measurement, data, and graphs.
  • Assessment (Tasks 4-5):
    • Preference assessments and ABC data collection.
  • Skill Acquisition and Behavior Reduction (Tasks 6-15):
    • Include discrete-trial teaching, naturalistic teaching, and other procedures.
    • Three tasks must be demonstrated with a client.
  • Professionalism and Requirements (Tasks 16-20):
    • Session notes, client dignity, professional boundaries, supervision requirements, and seeking clinical direction.

Attestation and Signatures

  • Responsible assessor and assistant assessors (if applicable) must sign and date.
  • Confirmation of successful demonstration of all tasks and organization relationships.
