EcoSchools Programme and Achieving the Green Flag Award
Introduction to EcoSchools
- EcoSchools is an international network focused on environmental and community improvement.
- Participating in EcoSchools connects children and young people globally to address environmental issues.
- In Scotland, the program is funded by the Scottish Government and is free for nearly 1,000 participating schools, nurseries, and clubs.
- Successful schools are awarded the Green Flag.
Achieving the Green Flag Award
- Schools must follow seven elements to earn the Green Flag.
- Flexible approach to meeting these elements allows adaptation to different settings.
The Seven Elements of EcoSchools
1. Set Up an EcoCommittee
- EcoSchools is pupil-led.
- The EcoCommittee leads the EcoSchools activities, ensuring inclusivity and communication.
- Committees can vary in size and include pupils, staff, and community members.
2. Carry Out an Environmental Review
- Identifies current environmental actions and areas for improvement.
- Templates are available to assist in conducting reviews.
- Decision on which topics to focus on, including the mandatory topic of climate action and at least two additional topics.
3. Create an Action Plan
- Focus on climate action as a mandatory topic.
- Define desired changes and improvements for each topic.
- Plan actions and methods for achieving goals.
- Include at least one litter pick activity.
- Consider ways to measure and monitor progress.
4. Measure and Monitor Progress
- Evaluate if actions meet aims.
- Celebrate successes and identify areas for future improvements.
5. Link to the Curriculum
- Track learning experiences from EcoSchools activities.
- Connect experiences with various academic subjects.
6. Connect with the Community
- Share EcoSchools initiatives with the school and local community.
- Utilize both in-person and online methods to engage and create partnerships.
7. Create an Eco Code
- Develop a mission statement reflecting environmental values.
Application Process
- Submit a completed application via the online system.
- Successful applications are awarded a Green Flag.
Support and Resources
- Online training available for pupils and educators.
- Additional resources and templates available on the EcoSchools website.
Celebrations and Recognitions
- Annual Eco School celebration event in June.
- Special awards for schools excelling in environmental protection.
