in this video we shall learn the important river systems of maharashtra if you see the river systems of maharashtra most of the rivers they flow parallel to each other and they flow from north west towards southeast the major river basins of maharashtra are the tapi river basin godavari river basin krishna river basin and west flowing rivers when i say a river basin it means an area covered by the main river and its tributaries so let us begin with the godavari river basin river godavari is the largest river in peninsular india it is also known as dakshin ganga or vridhanga this river flows through the central part of maharashtra it originates in nasik near trimbakeshwar brahmagiri hills trimbakeshwar is one of the twelve jyotirlingas in india and five in maharashtra now this river flows through maharashtra telangana andhra pradesh and finally at the mouth of this river a delta is formed and the river finally joins bay of bengal the total length of this river is 1465 kilometers and in maharashtra it is 668 kilometers godavari river basin lies at an altitude between 300 to 550 meters it mainly flows through [Music] the left bank tributaries of this river that is rivers joining kodavari from the north are wayne ganga wayne ganga means the arrow of water wayne ganga is joined by vardha and in the final part this river is known as praanhita vardha is joined by pain ganga and pain ganga is joined by aran then it is river purna and river poorna is joined by dudhana finally at gadchiroli it is joined by indravadi and indravati is joined by bandiya the rivers joining godavari from the right that is from the south are and prabhavara is joined by mula then it is river manchera the tributaries of manjira are terena and manar we come to the next river basin and daddy's river krishna river krishna is the second largest river of the peninsular india the first being river godavari this river originates in the western ghat at the jor village near mahabaleshwar at an elevation of about 1300 meters this river starts from maharashtra and then flows through karnataka telangana and andhra pradesh and finally merges into bay of bengal river krishna is around 1400 kilometers in length and 282 kilometers in maharashtra the main tributaries of river krishna in maharashtra are river koina panchkanga ganga and ghat prabha from the north that is the left bank tributary river bhima joins krishna this river originates near bhima shankar temple in cade taluka it flows down the bhima shankar wildlife sanctuary and finally merges into krishna along the border between karnataka and telangana about 24 kilometers north of raichur river bhima is 861 kilometers long and 451 kilometers in maharashtra from the north the rivers joining bhima are river gold then it is sina river sina is a large tributary starting near ahmadnagar city from the south the rivers joining bhima are indraining and nira river these rivers can be seen in pune district neera river flows along the border of pune and joins bhima in solab we come to the third river basin and that is tapi 80 of river tapi basin is in maharashtra this river is 725 kilometers long it originates in the mahadev hills of multai in the bethul district of madhya pradesh tapi river is the second largest westward flowing river the first being river narmada tapi covers its first 282 kilometers in madhya pradesh out of which 54 kilometer is the common boundary between the state of maharashtra and madhya pradesh in maharashtra this river flows for 228 kilometers before entering gujarat and in gujarat the length is 214 kilometers tapi river merges into the arabian sea through the gulf of kambay in hindi it is called the gulf of khambhat after flowing past the surat city the north tributaries that is the right tributaries of tapi are gomay arunavati and the south that is left bank tributaries are purna purna is joined by pedny morena then it is girena and panjara now we shall learn the other westward flowing rivers which is mainly confined to the western coastal plains of maharashtra which is the konkan region so to begin with it is daman ganga also known as dhawan river rises in the sayadaris close to ambegan village in dhindori taluka of nasik district then it is it flows through nasik and palgary district its left bank tributaries are tansa and pinjal deheraji and surya are its right bank tributaries then it is river ullhaas it flows through pune rygard and thani after coming to thane it splits into wasai creek and thani creek in the ryga district the major rivers are amba kundalika tala and savitri which forms a border between rygard and ratnagiri districts in ratnagiri the major rivers are bharja joke vashishthi vashishthi is joined by jagbudi then it is jaigarh in the sindhudur district the major rivers are which again lies in the border of sindhuduruk that is between sindhuduruk and goa thank you
