How to Perform CPR - Victor Chang Cardiac Research Institute

Introduction

  • CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation) is a lifesaving technique used in emergencies when someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.
  • The technique involves hard and fast chest compressions and can be performed by both trained and untrained bystanders.

Importance of CPR

  • CPR maintains circulation of oxygenated blood to the brain and other vital organs.
  • It is crucial during heart attacks or near-drowning incidents.
  • Brain injury can occur within minutes without CPR.

Steps to Perform CPR

  1. Call for Help

    • Always call Triple Zero (000) for emergency assistance before starting CPR.
    • Untrained bystanders should await instructions from the operator.
  2. Performing CPR

    • Follow the DRSABCD action plan:
      • Danger: Ensure the area is safe.
      • Response: Squeeze shoulders, ask loudly.
      • Send for Help: Call 000, get an AED.
      • Airway: Check and clear airway.
      • Breathing: Look, listen, and feel for breathing.
      • CPR: 30 compressions followed by 2 rescue breaths.
      • Defibrillation: Use AED as soon as available.

When is CPR Needed?

  • When a person is unconscious, breathing abnormally, or not breathing.
  • CPR is most effective when started immediately.
