Melody and Harmony
- Melody is a succession of single notes that express a musical idea.
- Harmony is the combination of two or more notes played together.
- Chords are a form of harmony.
Rhythm and Tempo
- Rhythm is the time element of music, organizing sounds in patterns.
- Tempo describes how fast or slow the music is.
- Italian terms: "Largo" means slow, "Presto" means fast.
Dynamics and Timbre
- Dynamics refer to how loud or soft the music is.
- Timbre is the characteristic of sound that distinguishes different instruments or voices.
Texture in Music
- Monophonic texture has only one melodic line without accompaniment.
- Polyphonic texture has two or more independent melodies played together.
- Homophonic texture involves a main melody with accompanying harmony.
- A round is when the same melody starts at different times in polyphonic texture.
Musical Form

- The ABA form has three sections: the first and last are the same, the middle is different.
