  • The elements include melody, harmony, rhythm, tempo, dynamics, timbre, texture, and form.

Melody and Harmony

  • Melody is a succession of single notes that express a musical idea.
  • Harmony is the combination of two or more notes played together.
  • Chords are a form of harmony.

Rhythm and Tempo

  • Rhythm is the time element of music, organizing sounds in patterns.
  • Tempo describes how fast or slow the music is.
  • Italian terms: "Largo" means slow, "Presto" means fast.

Dynamics and Timbre

  • Dynamics refer to how loud or soft the music is.
  • Timbre is the characteristic of sound that distinguishes different instruments or voices.

Texture in Music

  • Monophonic texture has only one melodic line without accompaniment.
  • Polyphonic texture has two or more independent melodies played together.
  • Homophonic texture involves a main melody with accompanying harmony.
  • A round is when the same melody starts at different times in polyphonic texture.

Musical Form

  • Form is the structure or plan of a piece of music.
  • The ABA form has three sections: the first and last are the same, the middle is different.
