Science 7 - Module 1: Scientific Ways of Acquiring Knowledge and Solving Problems

Introduction

  • This module is intended for Grade 7 students as part of the Alternative Delivery Mode.
  • It introduces the scientific method as a way to explore questions, conduct experiments, and solve problems scientifically.

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the steps of the scientific method.
  • Use the scientific method to solve problems via experiments.
  • Relate the scientific method to everyday life.

Pre-test (What I Know)

  • Questions on the correct order of the scientific method, identification of scientific questions, and variables in an experiment.

Scientific Method

  • Steps of the Scientific Method:
    1. Make Observations: Notice phenomena that prompt questions.
    2. Come Up with a Question: Develop a specific question based on observations.
    3. Develop a Hypothesis: Formulate an educated guess or prediction.
    4. Conduct an Experiment: Test the hypothesis by manipulating independent variables and observing changes.
    5. Record and Analyze Results: Collect data during experiments to determine outcomes.
    6. Draw Conclusions: Determine whether the hypothesis is accepted or rejected based on results.

Activities

  • Activity 1.1: Understanding how science works and the role of the scientific method in investigations.
  • Variables in Experiments:
    • Independent Variable: The variable that is changed or controlled.
    • Dependent Variable: The variable that is observed or measured.

Example Experiment

  • Example: Testing how different liquids affect the rate at which ice melts.
    • Independent Variable: Type of liquid.
    • Dependent Variable: Time it takes for ice to melt.

What I Have Learned

  • The scientific method involves detailed observation, hypothesis formulation, and experimentation.
  • Steps to solve a problem include identifying variables, testing the hypothesis, and drawing conclusions.

Assessment

  • Understanding the steps in the scientific method and the roles of variables in experiments.
  • Questions focus on using the scientific method and its importance in experiments.

Additional Activities

  • Matching exercise to reinforce understanding of the steps in the scientific method and their descriptions.

Note:

  • Use the module carefully, follow instructions, and consult with teachers if needed.
  • Answer keys are provided for self-assessment.
