Efficient Use of 3D Warehouse in SketchUp

let's go ahead and bring in the cooktop or range oven a hood and the refrigerator so this might be our first trip out to the 3d warehouse so go ahead and click through the 3d warehouse it might ask you to sign in i'm already signed in if it does you may either need to create an account you can try your student credentials but you may need to make an account so there's a lot of a lot of content here and some of it is a really good content i can see even right here this furniture this is a trusted commercial furniture brand so i would feel good downloading from them and you can see there's a lot of brands some you may recognize and you can search for almost anything so if i type in range let's spell it right or um okay so uh here's an actual range a range in hood um here's a kitchenaid range and hood but you see there's some sort of miscellaneous ones as well things that maybe don't fit in here you know why is there a paint sample when i type in range or base cabinets so i'll usually and here's some more you can see kitchenaid puts their own content on here decor puts their own content on here so that helps give us a little clue on maybe what to search for so if i back up and maybe search for a brand like kitchenaid you can see that there's a lot of different content here so i'm going to need a dishwasher now that i see this little drink cooler i might want one of those too but there'll be a lot of content in here specific to the brand so it's nice to look around and kind of shop around a little bit before you end up bringing things into your model i saved a few models so i could show you this so i'm going to go to my content here and click into this folder and look at the models so you can see i've saved i actually made a really simple garage door so i put that in here this is the first thing i've ever uploaded to sketchup and i found a sectional sofa the interesting thing when looking for sofas was there's not a lot out there that i want to put into my model so i started looking even deeper and there are sites that you can buy a brand name sofa like mod way or joy bird and some of the models cost up to 30 dollars and i i'm i may if i end up buying one i'll let you know but what i'm looking for is just something really basic simple and small so when i look at a model for evaluation i want to look at this model info and i want to see this file size and i can see this is under one megabyte so i feel okay downloading something that small into my model i can also see that it was uh the unit of measure was meters so it's not going to be a specific size but i can use my scale tool and fix that and even though this is an individual designer not a name brand i like the size of the model and the style of the model so i will probably use this if i back up and go to my refrigerator here you can see this is also a nice small file size so and it's ha it's been downloaded 40 000 times so it's probably a pretty good model it's a very basic looking refrigerator but it's rather current i can see the size of it here and i do like that file size so i'll feel okay putting this into my model and let's see if i can find tried to save actually i really like this dining room set as well i'm going to go back and i'm going to search for a bed there was something i found earlier that i wanted to show you i think it might have been tufted bed so i'm looking for a model to show you that's going to be really large something that i would really hesitate to bring into my model you want to be careful when you're selecting any model and for example if i click on this model here i can see that the file size is 45 megabytes and there's a lot going on in this model it looks like it might be you know it's um it might be the whole space but that's really big if i start um downloading really big files into my model it's going to slow down the performance and make working on the project really difficult because the model will stop moving so whatever you choose to download make sure that you're sticking with something that is a really small file size so let's go back and grab two of the things that i've saved two or three actually and i actually want to go to my folder and i made a folder for this project and i'm going to grab first the slide in range and again i can see that it's a very small file size i can see the size of the range itself and it actually might be a little bit short for the space so when you download something usually you have the choice to download directly into your model or to save the file so if you're exploring the 3d warehouse maybe just have a blank model open where you can open some of these objects and see if you really want them in your model because you can always bring them in later for this one i'll say yes and i'm going to come in here and it looks like it's backwards so let's just set it down on the face in the group and right now actually i'm going to hit escape because i don't want to be in the wall group i want to be in the kitchen group when i bring that in so let's go back to the warehouse and it opened right to that page lucky me let's bring it in not sure it went where i wanted it though so once i've got it in here i'm on the move tool so remember these little plus signs allow me to move the object so i've rotated it 180 degrees i'm on a red axis and i'll go ahead and click inside now i want to get the back end of this aligned with this back edge and see how this is fitting in here so let's go ahead and try to put that in and as i suspected this is actually only a 30 inch range going into a 36 inch space so i could go back and find another one or let's see if i can it's going to allow me to use the scale tool and i don't see any grips which is interesting so they might have their model set to size and won't allow you to change them which is fine let's go find a 36 inch range so i'm going to go back to kitchenaid i didn't find anything in kitchenaid per se so i'll grab this one this whirlpool let's click on this and this one this file is a little bit bigger it is one megabyte so let's go back and see those are all from whirlpool corporation so they're just a little bit bigger file so let's go ahead and download this one and once again i'm going to set it into place and come on to the top of it until i get that tool for rotating and gently drag it 180 degrees and once again let's get in a position where i can grab it from the corner and then into that end point so now i've got it in place but it's not inside of the kitchen group so what i'll do now is go ahead and cut that so i can tap control x double click into that kitchen group so i'm in here now go to the edit pull down and choose paste in place and that brings it in and let's also go in and delete the guide so now we've got that range in there looking nice and let's bring in the refrigerator so let's go about here back to the warehouse and let's see if the one that i saved will fit in there i also have a dishwasher that i'll use later oh and the um hood which i may need to check the size so this one's coming in i'm going to place it on the face navigate to the top select one of the red plus signs click once drag around with my mouse until i get to the perpendicular and click once again and now i'll simply zoom in and move this into place from an end point to an end point i like how it's sort of going into an x-ray mode for me while i move it it's making it really easy to move so now i'll place some cabinets above my refrigerator and find a hood for above the range and next we'll work on creating the island and to give you a little preview i've got one started out here and i'll put the dishwasher inside and then move that back into place don't forget to save your work
