autismhacks.net right now and download my free autism life hacks book just because you're awesome okay guys so i wanted to do this video on autism and musical talent because basically like it fascinated me i am a musician i'm a multi musician if you don't already know i play in a band called straightjacket legends i play bass and i sing in that band but i also play guitar and drums and violin and cello and piano and i play all these instruments i'm self-taught because i have a relationship with uh music and that relationship stems from a vast amount of different reasons now a lot of people on the autism spectrum are musicians and a lot of very talented musicians in the music industry are on the autism spectrum so i wanted to know why you know what what is this relationship um and i remember i met an autistic savant who was also blind when i was doing a show he was closing the the show when i was doing a keynote and um he actually was just a fantastic pianist and it really got me thinking i was like wow this guy's amazing and um you know he's on the spectrum and like what relationship does his um condition have with music like why is music so interesting so at first i was like it has to be patterns right it just has to be like patterns of things that they just like you know we all like patterns i like routines or maybe music is repetitive patterns that people love but it goes deeper than that yes um you know learning structure and how instruments and chords are created is kind of a pattern and that's a lovely pattern and it has a relationship which i love doing but in terms of why it has such a deeper level it's all about mathematics now i didn't really think about this until i was applying to university and my uh the the person who's out in the tutor who's helping me kind of like do my application said um i wanted to do chemistry right and chemistry is all mathematics based and i had no previous kind of science education so i was like really going off on a whim here so in my personal statement to the university uh by the way guys i did get that placement and i did do my degree which i have degree in chemistry which is crazy i'm so proud of myself for doing it um so yeah blow my own trumpet there but um when i was applying my my tutor said why don't you say that you are a multi musician because music and maths are very much linked together and i was like okay and it worked they really did go for it then i realized huh music and maths are very much linked together like oh my goodness because music is patterns of timing signatures and you count when you play music and i was like dang this all makes sense i love counting i love numbers i actually would do a degree in mathematics if i had time but you know i i think maths is such an interesting concept and such a comfortable concept i actually like being around numbers um as weird as that sounds actually all my clocks are like 24 hour clocks because i like the the longer numbers you know um but in terms of music you know you're counting bars you're you're you're creating a mathematical kind of uh pattern sequence in your head to create music and then it made sense this is why autism and musical talent comes hand in hand because autistic people are generally aligned with the logical thinker type of brain and that logical thinker type of brain is the type of brain that enjoys mathematics and numbers and because mathematics numbers are related to music it's kind of only fitting really that autistic people would be really interested in music and play instruments this was kind of like the glass shattering moment for me and i was like oh my goodness how did i not think about this before um but you know music is no exception mathematics and sound are closely linked together also music is sound waves and sound waves are mathematical kind of nodes and troughs you know and and i think i i just love this i love the fact that it's like that now are you a musical autistic person let me know in the comments down below i'd love to know do you play an autistic do you play a musical instrument are you autistic let me know i read every single comment so yeah it's never wasted um but but this is fascinating and it fascinates me and i just love to see you know how many more musicians out there are on the spectrum and this would just be so interesting to see i'm just really like i don't know just brighten up my day to just look at more autistic musicians i just love that i think it's great um i think you guys are great and thank you so much for watching this video if you think this can help somebody or it's interesting please share it on your facebook twitter and instagram accounts if you have those and give this video a thumbs up if you enjoyed this one and i'll see you in the next one guys peace [Music]
