Understanding Simple Past Tense

  • Used to describe events that happened and ended in the past.

Summary

  • The formula for simple past tense: Subject + Verb (V2) + Object.

Types of Verbs

  1. Regular Verbs
    • Formed by adding -ed or -d to the base form.
    • Examples:
      • Stay → Stayed
      • Punch → Punched
      • Play → Played
      • Touch → Touched
  2. Irregular Verbs
    • Do not follow a specific pattern and often change completely.
    • Examples:
      • Awake → Awoke
      • Begin → Began
      • Drink → Drank
      • Eat → Ate
      • Run → Ran
    • Some irregular verbs remain the same:
      • Put → Put
      • Split → Split
      • Spread → Spread
      • Set → Set
      • Cut → Cut

Examples of Affirmative Sentences

  • Abdul went to Bali for holiday last Sunday.
  • She joined English club class at school yesterday.
  • John got an accident at the office last Monday.
  • Ronnie bought new laptops last night.
  • They watched Dylan, the newest movie at the cinema yesterday.
  • Adi went to school by his new cars this morning.

  • My mother cooked grilled fish for my birthday party.

Forming Negative Sentences

  • Formula: Subject + did not + Verb 1 or Subject + to be (was/were) + not

Examples of Negative Sentences

  • I did not sleep well last night.
  • Ronnie did not come to the office yesterday.
  • Adi did not win the English debate competition last month.
  • Arif was not the smartest student in the class.
  • She did not complete her job.
  • Many kids did not like horror movies.
  • Dodi did not eat the vegetables.
  • John did not buy a car.
  • Thomas did not come to my party yesterday.
  • George did not go to the dentist because he was afraid.

Forming Interrogative Sentences

  • Formula: Did + Subject + Verb 1 or To be (was/were) + Subject
