RICE Prioritization Technique

hi everyone i'm nikki co-founder at jexo and thanks for joining me in our second video about prioritization techniques today we will learn more about rice prioritization technique the rice stands for reach impact confidence and effort this method was developed by intercom and they also use it internally it's really simple but powerful and helps remove personal opinions from product backlog prioritization this technique is great for established product to work with rice prioritization method you will need to be able to quantify how many customers does this change impact but of course rise method isn't only for prioritizing product feedback it can also be used for prioritizing content marketing activities and similar let's have a look on how to work with this method shall we the first metric to look at is reach when filling this one up ask yourself a question how many customers does this change impact in a specific time frame for example quarter or month the answer is the exact number of customers next in the row is impact here we are looking at how much does this change contribute to our goal when assigning confidence we are asking how confident are we that this change will work while we are asking this often people overestimate the impact or the reach can be assigned with certainty because there aren't data to pick up the idea available usually when there are data that can back up our decision the confidence is high if there are no data confidence is low last metric to fill is effort let's make sure that we really include all parties involved when filling this one up and ask question how hard will this change be to implement the rise score is then calculated with the following formula now let's have a look on how we can use this template in practice i prepared an example backlog in jira and i'll be using foxlip prioritization plugin to record our metrics when assigning reach to the onboarding video task see how many new customers you had last quarter or if you want to be even more accurate you can calculate how many you are expecting based on your growth rate our navigationary design task will impact every user that logs into our app if we have 2 300 users then that's the number we are going to use here and last task is adding new filters we can check how many users used filters last three months you can see that this wasn't that hard in the end and it really helps to make better decisions next metric to fill is impact when filling up impact focus on your goal in our case the goal is to increase the conversion the onboarding video has high impact our data shows that not that many users get to the aha moment fast enough and stop using the app the navigation redesign has medium impact over the user testing some people got confused by icons and couldn't find their way around there is a high risk that these people would drop using the app due to frustration and adding new filters has low impact it was only few customers asking for these and there is a workaround available next in the row is confidence how confident we are that onboarding video will work i would say the confidence is high because we don't have onboarding in the app yet and placing model in the app should help plus the number of new trials every day is high confidence of navigation redesign is low we've done user interviews but there needs to be further testing them and last is filters the confidence is medium we do have usage data from filters and few customers mention missing filters but number of due requests aren't high enough last metric to assign is effort onboarding video is s almost no coding is required here and we know from the past that we are able to create videos quickly redesign is l the designs are almost always big tasks involving everyone from design development to even changing documentation and website and filters are medium we already have some filters in place so adding additional ones shouldn't be a big issue now we can have a look on the priority score and order our list by the priority score from highest to lowest and see the items that are most important on the top you can also visualize the effort and impact metrics on the priority matrix to easily identify quick wins high impact tasks that are achievable with low effort if you are looking for a backlog prioritization tool that integrates with jira where you can use this template you can try our app foxley it's really fun and easy to use and helps keep everyone in your team and stakeholders up to date with the latest priorities there is a prioritization method similar to rice called ice to keep it simple just remember if you have data about how many customers or users task reaches you can use rice method if you don't then it's better to use ice if you feel that dry's prioritization technique might not be the right one for you and your team have a look on our other videos where we introduce other prioritization methods like ice weighted shirts job first value versus effort or quick wins method see you in the next video and in the meantime happy prioritizing you
