Learning the Bones of the Body

Introduction

Overview of Major Bones

Skull

  • Cranium: Protects the brain; remembered with "Cranium brainium."
  • Mandible (Jawbone): Use to talk; remembered with phrases "Man, I talk a lot" and "Mand to masticate" (chewing).

Ear Bones

  • Bones: Hammer, Anvil, Stirrup (incus, malus, stapes) – not detailed in this lecture.

Chest and Shoulder Bones

  • Clavicle (Collarbone): Remember by "Clavicle collar" starting with "C."
  • Sternum: Center bone on the chest, like a necktie. Divided into:
    • Manubrium (top)
    • Body (center)
    • Xyphoid process (tip)
  • Ribs: Known but not detailed.
  • Scapula (Shoulder Blade): Remember "Scap back."

Spine

Pelvic Region

  • Pelvis: Hipbone, connected to Elvis Presley and his famous hip shaking.

Leg Bones

  • Femur: Long thigh bone, remembered when a dress covers it.
  • Patella: Kneecap
  • Tibia and Fibula:
    • Tibia: Larger, main bone
    • Fibula: Smaller, "tell a little fib"

Foot Bones

  • Tarsals: Small bones in the foot, located where toes are.
  • Metatarsals: Extend from tarsals.
  • Phalanges: Toes, same as fingers in naming.
