Understanding the PEEL Writing Structure

hi everyone i'm teacher cheryl and welcome to my channel so today we're going to be focusing on the peel structure and i wanted to go through this today with you because many teachers including myself we always tell our students use the peel structure use the peel structure but what exactly is the peel structure and why should we be using it so the peel structure is basically a way to organize your ideas and your thoughts and you can actually use this not just in continuous writing essays but you can also use it for situational writing as well as oral communication so let's get right into today's lesson first of all you will need to know what this peel so peel is actually one of the best writing strategies that can help you to organize your paragraphs and your ideas clearly within the paragraph so what does peel actually stand for the p in peel stands for point e stands for elaborate or explain the second e evidence for example and l is the link let's start off with p so what is p p is the point and the point means where you make your point about your paragraph you need to tell the reader your main point or your main idea of that particular paragraph and usually we will refer back to the question that has been given to you we also have to ensure that our point answers the question directly one suggestion i would have when you're writing your point is to use keywords from the question so what you would do is probably paraphrase the question in order to craft your point e in peel stands for example so you will need to support your point with examples or evidence here you can give personal examples or examples or evidence from the text if there is a text provided or you could refer to research or studies that have been done on the particular topic that you are talking about the next e is explanation so explanation is basically an explanation of how or why your evidence supports your point notice how everything is linked together everything always comes back to the main point of this particular paragraph and the last letter in peel is l which is your link so here you will need to link back to your main point which again links back to the question so once more you will need to refer back to the question make sure that you're answering the question directly and similar to the point you can use keywords as well so for your link you might actually paraphrase your point again so p stands for p make your point e support with evidence for example e explain how why your evidence supports your point and your link which is your link back to your point so let's take a look at an example of how we can use peel in situational writing take a look at this example question propose one activity for student counselors to encourage team bonding you have to state which activity you have selected and why i have a model paragraph here for you and i'm going to read it for you first after careful consideration i feel that the best suited activity for them is the cooking team building challenge this activity requires students to design a menu split organize and allocate specific cooking tasks to each member in their team the activity also further requires students to come up with a three-course meal since students have to complete many sub-tasks in the activity it serves to actively encourage and elicit communication between team members help build up familiarity and hone their teamwork skills thus this activity is very suitable in achieving the ultimate goal of the team building program which is to strengthen their overall cohesiveness what i'd like you to do now is to pause this video and try to identify the peel in this particular paragraph [Music] let's see if you have accurately identified the appeal in this particular paragraph [Music] so the first sentence there is your point it tells us exactly which activity has been selected the next two sentences is the example because it tells us exactly what the students have to do in this particular cooking team building activity one more thing to note is that the example of the evidence can usually be taken from the visual stimulus itself so obviously i've not shown you the actual visual stimulus but i'm just going to point out that this is the part where we would use the information from the visual stimulus the next section that i have highlighted in green is the explanation so in this part we are explaining how or why our example supports our point and finally the last sentence that's highlighted yellow is our link and once more our link has to kind of restate what our point is let's move on to the next example in this example we're going to look at using peel in continuous writing so this is the question prompt to travel is to discover do you agree let me show you an example paragraph that was written by my student and i'm going to read that for you first traveling can serve to expand our view of the world for example my trip to germany in 2016 was a very enriching experience i traveled to different parts of the country tried many different types of traditional german food and learned about the history of various places and monuments walking down the neighborhood street i felt immersed in the german culture and could observe how locals went about their daily lives therefore i feel that travelling is an eye-opening experience as it teaches us a lot of different and new things that we would not have experienced if we do not venture out of our own countries once more i'd like you to pause this video and try to identify the peel in this particular paragraph let's check if you've identified the peel accurately in this paragraph so the first sentence highlighted in blue is my point which answers the question directly i'm agreeing that traveling is discovering and the point tells me the main point or the main idea of this particular paragraph the next line highlighted in red is my example and the sentence is highlighted in green is my explanation so here i'm explaining how why my example supports my point and finally the last part that's highlighted in yellow is my link and once again i'm restating the main point of the paragraph so now that we know what peel is let me share with you some extra tips when using peel so first of all the evidence of the example and the explanation can be swapped so your paragraph might look like this first your point explanation and then you give an example finally your link another tip is that you might want to repeat your evidence and your explanation so it will look something like this your point and then you give an example one and you give an explanation one and then you give example two and explanation two and then finally you end of the paragraph with your link let's take a look at one final example so this is the question prompt [Music] once more i'm going to read to you an example paragraph many people believe in the existence of the loch ness monster they argue that the many incidents seen by hundreds of different people over the years prove that nessie does exist an example of a sighting happened in 1933 when a london surgeon called robert wilson saw a creature with a long neck on the lock many other people respected and educated people also claim to have seen the monster a strange feature of all the sightings is that everyone reports the same shape and size of the creature what i'd like you to do now is to identify the peel in this paragraph as well and also think of how you can improve this paragraph let me know your ideas in the comment box below okay so let's identify the peel in this paragraph so first of all the first line that's highlighted in blue is my point and that states my main point or main idea of this paragraph next the words highlighted in red is my explanation so here i'm explaining why people believe in the existence of the loch ness monster next the words highlighted in green is the example and finally the words highlighted in red gives an additional explanation so how can we improve this paragraph you realize that the link is missing right so we need a link there we would say something like this therefore this is sufficient proof to many that the loch ness monster does really exist so to recap this very quickly heal stands for key make your point e support with evidence or example e to explain how why your example supports your point and l to link back to your main point i hope you found this video useful if you did please give it a like and subscribe to my channel for more videos like this also feel free to share this video with your friends or family whom you think might find it useful see you in the next one bye [Music]
