okay I mean is this video long overdue yes it is but I mean is it here now yes it is so let's get right to it we love a little teacher moment so today we're going to be talking about the SAT grammar rules that you guys are going to want to know whenever it comes to studying for the digital sat this is part one and so today we're going to be focusing on colons semicolons commas and dashes first things first you're going to want to know the difference between a colon and a semicolon and I'm going to move myself a little bit o let's go up there for now and I'm going to be using myself in some examples to help you know demonstrate the difference between the two and so for colons you're going to want to think introductions so you use a colon when you want to introduce something like a list or an explanation and so my example here is I only ask for three things in a friendship loyalty humor and maturity so in my example here you're using a colon to introduce the things that I value most in a friendship which are loyalty humor and matur you're introducing the three things I value most and then on the other hand you have semicolons and for this you're going to want to think matchmaking right semicolons the difference here is that semicolons serve as like a bridge between two related ideas and so my example sentence here is meet analie she's passionate about content creation and has a heart full of compassion so in this example the semicolon is used to link to related ideas linking myself anal right and some things to know about me and so in a nutshell colons introduce something so they point to what comes next and on the other hand semicolons connect related thoughts so they link two things together okay so when will colons and semicolons appear on your digital sat and they're going to appear on the punctuation question specifically those questions about the conventions of Standard English right and so my example here is on their strange American foods tour Ida and Jeff discovered three of the country's oddest and most delicious desserts deep fried Coke bacon donnuts and chir pumple three pies inside a cake that sounds actually disgusting but here you want to think as there introductions connections neither and here you're introducing something you're introducing the country's oddest and most delicious dessert so reverting back to you know colons and semicolons are you introducing something or connecting two thoughts together right you're introducing something so here you're going to want to use a colon so your correct answer Choice here is going to be a okay so now you're going to want to know the difference between a comma and a Dash and for this we're going to be using Rory Gilmore to help us out with this one and so for a comma you're going to want to think Clarity so comma are used to indicate a pause in a sentence they're used to separate items in a list they're used to clarify relationships within a sentence so my example here is I live in Two Worlds one is a world of books so here you're providing a distinction between the two Realms of Rory Gilmer's life right and for dashes you want to think drama see these are really easy to remember comma Clarity dashes drama pretty easy right so Dash Es are used to create emphasis or to indicate a sudden change in thought um they add a sense of drama if you will to a sentence and so the example here is I am not afraid of commitment I'm afraid of settling and so here you're emphasizing the distinction between commitment and settling and so an easy way to remember this and in a nutshell is that commas provide information uh they provide Clarity and organization and dashes will emphasize that information and add emphasis or drama so commas help in organizing and clarifying the structure of a sentence and dashes create a more I guess abrupt break in a sentence and draw attention um to the information that they enclose and so again commas and dashes will appear on your punctuation questions my example is pretty easy here and I don't even need to read this through because I hope that you know just by looking at this for a split second that we're dealing with a list here and so you're going to use commas right so your correct answer Choice here will be B okay so I really hope that this video helped you guys in some way and if you guys have any questions whatsoever then definitely check out the study cave Discord Community there is an SAT help section and either I or another sat studier will help you also if you guys enjoyed this video and want to see more like this video the definitely make sure to let me know Down Below in the comment section I'm also working on another Discord Community server which is still in the making but I'm really excited about it and the second it launches and the second it is ready best believe that that link will be in the description um so be on the lookout for that thank you so much for watching and I will see you in my next one
