where's the script i don't know paul it was here and now it's gone but we've recycled all the paper we can't go back to print we love sean you couldn't ask for a more creative creative ambassador but honestly the guy is a bower bird i mean don't put that camera down in here he'll hot glue it to a mannequin head and use it in his next collection see so what are we doing about this training video now that the camera guys are here already we have to get this done today all right that's it i think i've got an idea everyone props follow me [Music] [Music] how am i looking hi my name is paul frasca welcome to your intro to sustainable salons by the end of this short film you'll be well on your way to green warrior status now sit back relax and let the good green times roll was my hair okay in that did it what oh [Music] sustainable salons rescues up to 95 of the salons resources from landfill and finds repurposing solutions that benefit the environment give back to the community and reward your salon but you know sustainability isn't just about the planet it's about people planet and profit it's about making real measurable change to make life better for everyone in the community so that it creates a ripple effect and we can be on our way to a better future sustainable salons exist because the salon industry has a massive waste problem how do we know well because we figured this out firsthand and who's we let me introduce you to my beautiful partner in life and in sustainable salons evelina sirocco haley do you know where evelina is isn't she evelina in 2010 we took a long drive around australia to research the waste bins of 160 salons i've been in the harrison game a long time by then so i knew the salon industry was long overdue for a sustainability checkup but we didn't realize exactly how extreme the situation was we discovered that aussie salons are sending over 1.5 million kilos of aluminium fall to landfill every year don't think you're off the hook there kiwis we found that you guys are throwing away more than 400 000 kilos of foil every year anyway back to 2010. we couldn't believe it mostly because aluminium is infinitely recyclable so evelina being the environmentalist insisted we do more homework on all the different items a salon uses during a client service then we went looking for recycling and repurposing streams for each of them so they didn't have to end up in landfill a few years later sustainable salons was born we started in sydney with just a few hairdressing salons and now we have hundreds of salons right across australia and new zealand including barber shops beauty salons dermal and cosmetic clinics and pet groomers you might be wondering what makes sustainable salons programs so different to your regular recycling options we get you to separate your materials at the source we give you separate bins for different items that way it comes to us clean and sorted which puts it in tip-top condition to be recycled and made into new products standard recycling services are co-mingled and the risk of contamination is huge they need large-scale machinery and manual labor to sort and separate and sometimes the cost of separation outweighs what they're trying to sell the materials even for that's where this gets really tricky but sustainable salons does way more than just repurpose your materials the items you no longer want become food for those in need or a job for a person with a disability or a hair boom that might one day clean up an oil spill all true stories and they're coming right up ultimately when you're part of sustainable salons you become a member of an amazing research movement we found solutions for so many items in the salon but there are still so many more that we can't repurpose yet because of your willingness to stick with us and your commitment to doing the right thing we're working every day to change this for the better you have insulin separation bins for your materials each time they fill up you empty them into the sexy purple bin where then every fortnight our drivers they come to your salon door to collect your valuable contents they come back to our depot where they're then sorted and sent to recyclers or researchers that give them a new life just before we jump into the nitty-gritty it's a good time for you all to grab your phones and follow us on social media and join our newsletter that way you won't miss out on anything from now on salon owners have you joined our members only facebook group get involved here we go then first up your insulin bins [Music] each bing comes with its own set of yes and no instructions which you'll find here on the label inside the lid or on the nifty salon guideline poster it's really important that you stick to the rules here if something ends up in the wrong bin it could make the whole bag of valuable resources unrecyclable forcing it to go to landfill it's like evelina always says so there's no use in which cycling when someone puts something in the recycling hoping that someone on the other end is going to do something with it it's not going to happen did you know that only 14 of plastic packaging is recycled globally at sustainable salons we take pretty much all types of plastic from your salon and we turn it back into plastic this is your plastic spin what do we take things like hard plastic like milk bottles we take color brushes bowls plastic bags we even take plastic film lids even mixed materials like chip packages but things we don't take like coffee bean packaging watch out for that regular latex and biodegradable gloves so please make sure all containers are empty and lightly rinsed don't forget to pour this into your chemical bucket which we'll talk about a bit later crush your product bottles and packaging and don't forget to remove the lids from your colored tubes we send your plastic to specialized recyclers such as plastics forest where it's made into underground cable cover for the nbn even new packaging or even outdoor furniture so when you put your plastic wrappers in here they could end up here in a table made from recycled plastics cool huh ultimately this means all of your plastics are kept in circulation and out of our oceans aluminium is infinitely recyclable meaning it can be used again and again forever plus recycling aluminium takes 95 percent less energy than producing it from its raw form so this is the metals bin what can go in here things such as aluminium canisters colored tubes foil metal cans even packaging can go in here so things that we can't take metal razors now these go in the razor tin stay tuned mix metal packaging plastic lids look these should have gone into the plastics bin because you're going to remove them from the colour tubes so if you're not sure if it's metals look at these symbols on your packaging or do the scrunch test pretty much just scrunch it into a ball see if it comes back and if it does well then it's plastic it needs to go in the plastics bin our metals are sold to scrap dealers whether then sold to manufacturers that then make them into new products like refoil your metals also do something extra special but that's coming right up next stop the razor tin in here goes metal razors feather razors and even threading needles but please do not put your plastic attachments in here or your razor handles separate these then put the razors only in this tin once it's full just seal it up with a bit of sticky tape and then just place it directly in the metal spin just like the contents of the metal's bin raises are sold to scrap dealers then forwarded on to manufacturers to make new products out of metal i bet you didn't know that paper can only be recycled twice but even so for every tonne of paper that you recycle almost 13 trees and more than 31 000 liters of water has just been saved so this is your paper bin what can go in here things such as office paper cardboard paper packaging wax coated cardboard magazines disposable coffee cups and even tetra packs can go in here but please watch out for things such as biodegradable coffee cups and packaging any mixed paper products only when the paper and plastic can't be separated check coffee cups for the recyclable symbols separate the plastic lids make sure to place that in the plastic spin for large cardboard items fold them flat and place them together in one large cardboard box that goes beside the purple bins for your collection place magazines in a plastic bag make sure to put no more than 20 inside one bag otherwise it will just fall straight through place this in your purple bin and make sure to keep the tie always at the top paper is sold to specialized recyclers where it is reduced into a pulp first and then it's created into new paper products so to make sure you are not destroying our forest always choose paper products from a sustainable source where possible look out for the fsc certified badge when you're purchasing your new paper products but here's the really awesome part a hundred percent of the proceeds from selling the metals razors and paper goes directly to ozharvest and kiwi harvest a full head of foils can provide a quarter of a meal to somebody in need in fact for every dollar we donate we provide two meals to australia and new zealand's most hungry we have over 60 vans across the country nationally and we need finances and money to help those vans go around the country and the beautiful partnership that we have with sustainable salons eliminating that plastic and going to landfill really helps us to eliminate the food also going to landfill and being delivered to those people that really need it within our community here's one that's going to blow your mind did you know that shampoo and peroxide are approximately 98 water it's a true story that's why it's easily recyclable here's how we do it so this is your chemical bucket what can go in here you can put your color solutions that's pins semis or even lighteners you can add peroxide even developer lotions in here you can add your perm liquid straightening liquid tanning solutions even acetone but please make sure you're not putting things like in here such as solid chemical waste things like wax even pomade watch out for chemical packaging plastic bags even cleaning products rinse product bottles and empty them into your chemical bucket only liquid chemicals from the salon are accepted if you're unsure call the sustainable salons head office you can find the number on your trusty fridge magnet your sustainable salons manager will leave on your fridge chemicals are sent to specialized recyclers where they're turned back into water that's used for roadworks manufacturing even construction together we're now keeping excess salon chemicals out of our waterways preventing harmful toxins from destroying marine life and entering our food supply for our beauty friends this one isn't part of your setup but i bet you're going to find this really interesting so stick with me yep i'm talking about hair did you know that a full head of hair can hold the weight of two elephants crazy hair is one of the most undervalued resources in the world we found a pretty cool purpose for it but we're going to get to that so this is the hair bin what can go in here well simple things like human hair clippings virgin and natural hair colored hair 100 human hair extensions ponytails including 100 human hair extension ponytails more on this soon so what can't go in here please do not add any synthetic ponytails or hair clippings make sure to remove the metal clips and please no general waist goes in the hair bin hair only so when you sweep it up from the cell and floor separate the general waist from the hair clippings it's that simple so waste materials other than hair will contaminate the hair supply meaning that we can't make hair booms or add it to any compost mixture and let's not forget about our furry contributors pet groomers you have a special set of instructions but pet hair is just as useful so what can go in the pet hair bin simple you can put any clean hair from the body or legs can go in this bin simple as that but please watch out for things that shouldn't go in this bin hair from the sanitary area or around any injuries matted or excessively dirty hair hair where there's fleas or eggs are present and please watch out for any doggy poo we don't need this in our bin if hair is in poor condition or there are fleas or eggs found around the pet please dispose of this in the general waste bin even if it's been treated eggs could still be present hair clippings are stockpiled in the sustainable salons depot ready to be made into hair booms in the event of an oil spill emergency in the meantime hair is used in research at the university of technology sydney our goal is to make hair booms a commercially viable sustainable option for the oil spills both at land and at sea hair clippings are also used in compost projects and research and in art installations to help raise the awareness of the hair booms project and its sustainability future so the work they're doing at uts in collaboration with sustainable salons is looking at all of the different solvent types that we sell in australia and comparing them with natural synthetic products to try and find the best product possible to use in oil spills so here's a really fascinating product because you can consider it a bit of a waste stream but we're diverting it and reusing it into purposes like cleaning up oil spills on in the ocean as well as on land now we're looking at um so we're finding that it's incredibly effective at cleaning up crude oil in all sorts of contexts it's time to talk ponytails i was a salon hairdresser for 20 years and do you know how many ponytails i actually cut off to donate to charitable wigs in that time zero zip not even one no one ever told me that other people could actually benefit from my clients ponytails they are so incredibly valuable they contribute to wigs for people suffering from cancer alopecia areata and other hair loss conditions sustainable salons is now the largest collector of ponytails in the southern hemisphere before our network existed not even half the amount of ponytails needed for the medical wigs were making it to the charities here's what you need to remember we take human hair ponytails 20 centimeters or longer coloured or uncoloured human hair extensions must be verified 100 human hair by your supplier things we don't want we don't want synthetic hair ponytails okay wait wait wait i want to get real here the super high quality 36 centimeters and above virgin hair is the holy grail these ponytails are so powerful because they end up on weeks for sick kids and they can really help fund life-changing programs so guys when you have that client sitting in your chair getting ready for their big chop be bold be brave and always ask them if they'd like to go that extra mile to chop 36 centimeters for a truly special impact on that note now seems like a great time to show you just how a ponytail donation should be done let me bring in my trusty model his name's sean sean mate just come through here please great so you'll find out a little bit more about sean and what he does later but for now he has a great ponytail that is ready to donate no no you're good you're good you're good step one wash and dry the hair first don't apply styling products [Music] step two so what have i done to sean i've sectioned his hair into six small ponytails around his head i've secured it with an elastic one to two centimeters down from where i intend to cut plaited it into a length of a ponytail and secured it with another elastic at the bottom one two [Music] three four five and six [Music] step three measure the length of the ponytail planned for donation it must be a minimum of 20 centimeters long from where you have tied the elastic not from where you will cut the hair wow sean you're going to be giving us over 50 centimeters no i'm not step four cut the hair one to two centimeters above the elastic band of each ponytail do not wet the ponytail after it has been cut off step five ask your client to fill in the ponytail donation form step six simply bag up the ponytail by putting in the donation form and ponytail inside and zip it up [Music] step seven simply put your ponytail inside your hair bin present your client with a ponytail certificate and be sure to snap a photo of your client holding the fantastic donation to post on social media did you know it takes 20 ponytails to make just one wig we grade all the ponytails that come through our depo and then we send them off to charities such as variety the children's charity the australian alopecia areata foundation and many other local wig makers who produce charitable wigs barani's relationship with sustainable salons australia is very important for spreading awareness about variety's work and connecting variety with the hairdressing industry so they can support children across australia by collecting hair to be made into weeks for some single single-use disposable items there is no repurposing solution available just yet mostly due to the hygiene standards and the way they're produced and manufactured using mixed materials for our beauty dermal and cosmetic friends we're working really hard to find the answers to these single use disposables you use every day but the good news is that you're on board and every salon involved brings us one step closer to finding solutions in the meantime here are a few things that we can take in our paper bin whoa such as we can take paper-based wax strips paper bedrolls wooden spatulas but please with the wooden spatulas make sure you take off as much wax as possible things that we can't take fibrella facial wipes cotton fabric or synthetic wax strips mixed materials such as hair nets and g-strings whoa hey if you're unsure about any items consult the product manufacturer's guide or just ask your sustainable salons manager plus we provide loads of sustainably minded alternatives for disposable items on the reward shop which we'll talk about later there are some items we also collect that don't actually go in any of the in-salon bins here's how you need to get them ready for our collection tools and e-waste the things that we can take are blow dryers straighteners irons curling wands all handheld tools no problem things that we can't take climazons white goods mounted hair dryers or household kitchen appliances hey only handheld tools are accepted so grab your tools place them in the plastic bag make sure you tie it really tightly because you're going to be placing this in the purple bin e-waste is sent to recyclers where the items are pulled apart and the valuable materials such as the copper wires are repurposed into new products all recycled e-waste reduces the amount of raw materials mined and prevents toxins from leaching into our environment glass we take glass bottles treatment bottles jars vials and pipettes things that we don't take drinking glasses broken glass light bulbs window glass ceramic plates cups and crockery we just don't take it remove any rubber stoppers and put them in the general waste bin and place any plastic lids in the plastic bin for safety of the drivers and the depot staff place all collected glass in a cardboard box secure it with tape label it glass and then place it right next to your purple bin for collection all glass is sent to local recyclers where it's made into new versions of itself it's also infinitely recyclable recycling one bottle saves enough energy to power a tv for one and a half hours sharps waste is a form of biomedical waste which includes any devices or objects used to puncture the skin including hypodermic needles disposable blades and scalpels syringes and injection devices often sharps are not disposed off correctly they can harm workers in the collection process and they mostly end up in landfill with us your sharps are guaranteed to be disposed of accordingly and to legal requirements they go to the correct registered biohazard handling where they are incinerated and kept out of landfill okay now we're talking about batteries ink cartridges whoa doll's heads and polystyrene foam we also take non-biodegradable coffee pods group same items and place them in a separate plastic bag because you're going to tie it tightly and then you're going to place it in the purple bin right all items are sent off to specialized recyclers for repurposing and upcycling education organizations and there are a few things we don't take from you anything biodegradable or compostable that includes towels gloves capes beauty products food packaging coffee pods or cups how to diy follow the product manufacturer's guidelines on how to responsibly dispose of these items organic waste we don't take food scraps green waste such as flowers plants or leaves how to diy implement a composting solution in the reward shop you can get a picashi an in-salon composting solution or talk to your sustainable salons manager for more information textiles please don't give us natural or synthetic materials such as cotton bamboo towels or capes how to diy before the waste bin think of a reuse option can you donate it to a local charity arts project animal rescue organization sustainable sounds is searching for recycling answers so stay tuned sometimes there is just no category for some items well we've given it a category it's called weird some things we can take some we can't things you might classify as weird include whoa a clock some sort of spray thing even a gun before you add any of these items or other unusual things to the purple bin please take a photo and text it to your sustainable salons manager they'll reply and let you know if we have a solution for it if we can't take it we hope you'll continue to hunt for a solution before you send it to landfill now let's bring in the star of the program sexy fun unique and great at holding all your stuff ah there you are baby it's true the purple bin has become one of the most iconic parts of the program when people see it they know the sound is proactive about changing the future it's awesome too because it's easy for our drivers to recognize when they're out on the road but sometimes i catch paul in the depot staring at them for long periods of time i think he loves them more than he loves me the purple bin is like a protector of your valuables like a safe it comes with a locking key to prevent passers-by from throwing their rubbish in and contaminating your valuables don't worry the driver has a key so you don't have to be there when they're coming to collect all you need to do is remember to put it out on the specific location on collection day your nominated salon representative owner or manager will receive a text reminder the day before collection or same day if it's an evening pick up now that we know what's what let's head out and see how the collection happens come with me [Music] this is russell he's one of our drivers here in sydney but there are people just like him in every location who come to your salon each fortnight these guys are the rescue operation for your salon materials they fight peak hour traffic crazy weather conditions traffic cops speeding cameras no parking signs all to make sure your valuable resources make it to their second life they're top quality driving professionals and they're guns of what they do oh man [Music] now our guys collect everything by hand sustainable salons doesn't use dump trucks we want to make sure all your materials make it back to our depot in tip-top condition you can help make it easier faster and more importantly safer for our drivers with these simple steps step one compact your materials as much as possible and pack them tightly into your purple bin so there's nothing overflowing out of the top step two tie your bags as tightly as possible so nothing falls out and pack them in the bin with the tie facing upwards when it's open like this things could fall out and other items may also get in and contaminate the collection this one is perfect nothing's getting out of here okay step three make sure you leave your chemical bucket and any large items such as cardboard or glass next to the purple bin for easy access speaking of the chemical bucket put this out to swap when the contents reaches the top of the label just reply yes to the text for the next collection to request the new bucket when you leave it out the driver will pick up the full one and leave the fresh empty one inside the purple bin man i love my job so much honestly i tell my mom i'm a recycled materials extraction technician it's awesome to know that i'm rescuing all of this material so that it gets another use so it really grinds my gears when i pick up a bag and it falls out all over the place it takes up a lot of time to pick it back up and paul really hates it when i'm late all right so we've got everything now back to the depot [Music] right now you're inside the sustainable salons headquarters this is our main depot and also the reprocessing depot for all of our new south wales act salons in other locations the sites differ in size and operations but they all do the same thing sort and process your materials and then send them off for recycling but there's something even cooler you should know about our reprocessing operations in some locations we work with some amazing partners such as the endeavour foundation to employ people with disability to sort and prepare your materials so not only are you helping the planet but you're also providing stable and purposeful work for people and local communities now some of our resources don't even make it out there into the big wide world some end up in the hands of our creative ambassador let's go find him sean sean sean sean mate all right sean hey what are you doing sean mcgraw is a hairdresser and artist he loves creating awesome artwork and things you wouldn't even think about in fact the weirder the better we love having him around because he shows us that cool stuff can be made from things we normally just throw away dude what are you doing oh i found all these discarded items i saw you have a blank wall in your office i'm gonna make you a mural a mural cool did you say discarded items yeah discarded wait i don't know about what the hell is that my phone that's not an ah bugger the sustainable salons depot is kind of like my own personal art store everything's free you know i can just come in and take it i haven't paid for anything in ages but you know what i've learned everything in here has potential to become art potential to become something new and bin diving does make me very very happy how cool is it that your selling materials can do so much but that's not all why don't i show you follow me [Music] we're here at one of our community hair cutting events this is the eat shop shop event today we're partnering with oz harvest thread together and a bunch of other fantastic community organizations to bring free goods and services to sydney's most vulnerable people as you can see here this is a hard-working team of stylists all behind me all sustainable salons members who have chosen to volunteer their time and skills to give someone a fresh haircut and a confidence boost people often forget about the people part of sustainability when we share what we have we help lift those around us to a better place and that builds us stronger and empowers communities for the future so a big part of our mission is to get up and lend a hand and that's where you come in we have volunteer opportunities throughout the year that you can get involved in and not just for hairdressers there's a call out for beauty therapists and potentially pet groomers all you need to do is register to volunteer with us through our website or facebook page and we'll get in touch with you when the next local event is in your area okay guys so now that your sustainable mission is clear how do you guys stay on track and keep your clients in the loop i'm so glad you asked let me grab the team and we'll head back to the salon [Music] [Applause] so here we are in the salon you don't want to miss out on an opportunity to tell your clients about what their visit is actually accomplishing but don't worry we've got some amazing merchandise that you can spread around your salon to show off all the amazing things that we do at sustainable salons [Music] what's going on here oh god it's not enough is it they're never gonna know it's a sustainable salon look while these guys are trying to sort out the situation here why don't we roll the sustainable salons montage for visual merchandise for dummies hey when we're going to change that title [Music] so let's talk about the sustainable salon fee this is the client's contribution to minimizing the footprint of their service and also ensuring all these other cool things we talk about can happen too but how can we possibly take two dollars and turn it into all that it's pretty simple really 40 is for resource collection and redirection this allows us to process all the materials and then direct them to get recycled or repurposed 25 percent is for implementing green practices this part comes straight back to you guys you get reward points that you can spend in the reward shop on sustainably minor products to use in the salon which means you can become more sustainable 20 helps us support the community social change organizations and charities benefit from the redirection of materials plus it helps us provide free services to those in need via community events and partnerships 10 goes into researching recycling solutions ongoing r d ensures we can keep finding new ways to repurpose more of the materials you guys use every day five percent is for awareness and education we believe knowledge is power so we invest in talking to salons schools community events national and local media all in the name of spreading the sustainability message and getting more people joining the movement to a zero waste future as you can see a tiny two dollars can go a long way when we're all in this together when the client is ready to pay all you need to do is add the two dollars to the final bill at checkout some of you might be using a salon software that has created a special function which will include an automatic fee on the bill check with your provider on this for others you'll likely need to just hit the necessary button or insert the surcharge you've created in your service list to add the fee so if your client service cost is 250 dollars you'll just need to add the two dollar sustainable salon fee and their final bill comes to two hundred and fifty two dollars easy some software companies have provided us with a step-by-step instructions on how to set up the sustainable salon fee in your computer which we've added in the member kit you can find this in the sustainable salons member account on our website let's log in and have a look around just give me a second i need to call the office because i forgot my password thank you for calling sustainable salons this is lizzie hey lizzy yeah i'm
