Basic German Language Crash Course

so in the next 25 minutes I'm going to take you from zero German to speaking real sentences on the A1 level as a native German speaker I've helped over 1,000 students learn German and trust me learning German can actually be very fun and easy I'm going to guide you step by step so covering all the essentials pronunciation key phrases basic grammar and real life examples and at the end of this video you'll be able to introduce yourself and speak basic sentences so let's go Okay so so before we jump into the actual Source let's quickly go over the German alphabet and the pronunciation because there are some differences compared to English so here is the regular alphabet at first please speak after me ah b c d e f g ha e y c l m n o p q l s t u f v x Upsilon set so let me go over it once again a little bit faster A B C D E F G ha e y c l m n o p q r s t u f v xilon z so the German alphabet has 26 letters much like the English alphabet but German also has four additional characters called uml and these are special characters you might have seen them in the past and wondered what the hell is that so the three are a u and U so it's a o and u but with two dots on top so how do we use these special characters so let's take the word m m this means girl and as you can see the second character is mat so for we have the word this is the word for Austria and for U we can say u u so this means over a u and U these are the special characters but there's also one more and it's this strange looking character right here this is called the S set it's also called the sharp s and in most cases it sounds like a double s for example Street and this is a special type of s sound now German also has specific sounds that might be new for you so we have ch H and this appears in a lot of German words we pronounce this in a very special way for example we have the phrase is means I or we can also take the word b b this means book so I would say CH has two sounds much like the one in is and the one in B so there is also s CH and you might have seen this in like school and it's basically pronounced like sh school you know and the character Z is also pronounced in a very special way it sounds like TS this is the future so it sounds like TS so let's do the first pronunciation exercise so please try to say these words with me now it's your turn all right so we have cleared the pronunciation and the German alphabet as the next step let's learn some basic greetings and sentences so please repeat after me hello hello means hello it's a very simple greeting then we can also say Gooden Morgan Gooden Morgan this means good morning guten Morgan good morning you say this in the morning then midday you can say guten G this means good day G good day you can use this basically at any time of the day and in the evening we say gent good evening guten abent good evening so in every single phrase we have guten you know guten Morgan guten T and guten abent and this means good okay so in case you want to say goodbye there are a couple of ways to say this in German so we can say choose this is a very casual way this means by or we can also say bisa bisa see you later and I would say the most standard way of saying goodbye is of v v so this means goodbye this is more formal and you can basically use it in any situation of V okay so as the next step let's introduce ourselves here are some basic phrases that you can use so if you want to say your name you can say Max Plus your name so in my case it's Max Max my name is Max now as an alternative you can also say B plus your name is is Max is been Max I am Max so to talk about where you're from you can say the sentence is Comm plus the country so in my case it's I come from Japan from Japan and if you want to talk about the city you're living in you can say in PL the city in in M this is for me in M I live in Munich so in plus the city all right so now it's your turn please say your name so you say plus your name is plus your name so once you say the sentence please also comment this one down below in the comment section and this way you can also get to know the other students so I'm going first is Max Okay so we've already covered some sentences and now I want to go into more detail and cover basic German grammar and this is so that we can build a solid foundation for the future so first let's talk about the German sentence structure you know German follows a very simple sentence structure it is subject verb object subject verb object and this is actually the same as in English so you should be familiar with so let's pick some sentences I learn German is means I Le means learn and dut means German so it's basically the same in English subject verb object so is the subject Le is the verb and is the object Le I learn German very simple all right next sentence Vasa I drink water subject verb object also very simple and the third one I eat bread subject verb object super simple so if you know the words you can form German sentences right away now in the last couple of sentences you might have seen the word is a lot and this means I and this is called a personal pronoun so let's talk about them you know there are multiple personal pronouns in English for example he she it and it is exactly the same in German so let's quickly go over the personal pronouns one by one so we have is is means I we have seen this so far then the next one is do do and this is youu but it's inal and then we have a a is he z z is she and s s is it then we move on to vi vi this means we and the next one is ear ear this means you all this is in a plural form and Fin finally we have Z you know Z can mean they and this can also be the formal U so in case we write z with a capital S it's the formal U and you use it in formal sentences but this is a very simple Avon crash course so you don't have to know this yet okay so let's form sentences using the personal pronouns okay let's pick is is B mut is B mut I am tired you learn German okay let's move on to a a means he a hat he has a car z z is z is she is happy s is cult s is cult it is cold all right we are doing well so far okay next one is inso V inso we are going to the cinema this is a more complex sentence but please bear with me so the next in line is ear SP FB FB you all play football and the final one Z abon here Z abiton here they work here now if you like the teaching style so far it would mean the world to me if you could subscribe to the channel I have a lot of other videos on my Channel about learning German so make sure to check them out after watching this video and at the end of this video I also have a surprise for you so stay tuned until the end all right so with our knowledge let's move on to asking and answering basic questions as always please repeat after me so we could ask stuff like com to where are you from V means where V com to where are you from and to this we can say I come from Spain means I means come our means from andanan means Spain very simple okay next question V what do you do V means what to this you can answer student student I am a student been student I am a student and somebody in Germany might ask you do you speak German do you speak and Dutch means German to this you could answer yeah yes a little now from earlier in the video you probably remember the SVO sentence structure right subject verb object structure now in the question as you can see the subject and the verb switch positions so now it's verb subject object now sometimes there can also be a question word at the front like vas or V so let's look at the difference with a simple sentence so a normal statement would be z z H hunger she is hungry so if we flip the subject and the verb we get a question Z hat Z is she hungry so we flipped Z and hat so instead of saying Z hunga we say hat zunga it's very simple so my question to you is com com where are you from please answer this question if you don't know the answer to this question you can also go back about 1 minute in this section there you can find the answer okay next let's learn the German number step by step so first to keep it simple the numbers from 1 to 10 so please repeat after me f z z so let's do it one more [Music] time all right so the numbers from 11 to 20 are a little bit more complex let me show you l [Music] so let me do it one more time Z so these are a little bit more complex and a great way to learn them is by recognizing the patterns in their formation so here are some strategies to make it easier so you can break down the numbers into groups so 11 11 and 12 12 these numbers don't follow a clear pattern and you have to memorize them but for the next numbers the te numbers 13 to 19 we can spot a pattern so and so on these numbers all end in which means 10 Z and so on so the first part is actually the root of the corresponding number from 3 to 9 you know we can see so we combine which means three and which means 10 there is only one exception this one is Ze in this case we drop the ending from zeben and are left with zeep Zep but the rest please combine the root and all right and we also have one number left 20 and this number stands alone and you have to memorize it okay so let me give you a couple sentences do you recognize the number here I have 20 okay next sentence Leon CED Leon where is the number it's D Leon buys three apples d app three apples so let's say your phone number is this okay so what can you say in this case hm so we can say Min plus the number [Music] Min so let me do it one more time that's the phone number now with the numbers we can also talk about our age so to ask for someone's age we can say v v b how old are you v b so to this you can answer bin plus uh B 19 I am 19 years old or I am 19 all right so let's move on to the days of the week in German so let's learn them step by step let's start with Monday Monday is Mon Mon Monday Dean St Dean star Tuesday MIT MIT Wednesday Don Thursday FR FR Friday Zam Zam Saturday z z this is Sunday and this way the whole cycle completes and we start with Monon again so as you can see all weekday end with t m de m is an [Music] exception z z so let me give you some example sentences today is Monday or Morgan is m Morgan is M tomorrow is Wednesday so we have h means today and Morgan means tomorrow H is Morgan East mid mid and M this is Monday and Wednesday all right let's move on to a very I would say confusing Topic in the German language noun genders and articles now in English for noun we just say the but in German there are three different words for the so we have there which is masculine D feminine and D neuter so we have three words for there which is very confusing right deas the infamous noun genders so every single word in German is assigned a noun gender and the big problem is there is no clear rule for gender you just have to memorize these articles for every single noun but don't worry here are some examples so let's take the table for example if you had to guess what gender would be the table I mean it's very hard to guess but you know in German the table is masculine detish detish the table this is masculine next is D cat D cat the cat is in German d and a neuter noun is D house D house the house so when you learn new words in German it's always best to learn them with the article in one big package and in this case flash cards can actually help a lot and at the end of the course I'm going to show you how you can get access to A1 flash cards now I would say noun genders is basically the enemy of every German student and it's perfectly normal to make mistakes in the beginning so it's very important to learn them from the beginning and also in combination with the individual noun so if you do this properly once you get to the B2 and C1 levels it's going to be very easy for you so don't worry it's going to get better with time so with all the concepts we learned so far let's look at a short dialogue to practice our understanding gut talk Bish beta okay so what did we learn from this dialogue there are two people talking the first person is Max and the other person is Leon Max and Leon are talking they introducing themselves and they're also asking where the other person is from and in this case you know Leon asks Max here comes to Here Comes to means where are you from and Max answered so max is from Spain so this dialogue actually tests if you understood the concepts from the Scrat course now of course 25 minutes is not enough to fully learn German what you saw in this video is just a small part of the A1 curriculum if you're serious about mastering A1 I have a complete German A1 course it has literally
