Lecture Notes: Blood Pressure Measurement Training

Speaker Introduction

  • Dr. Robert Kolak: Co-chair of the Medical Committee of the Virginia Healthy Pathways Coalition.
  • Part of a toolkit for blood pressure measurement in the 21st century.

Blood Pressure Measurement

  • Stethoscope Usage: Placed over an artery occluded by an inflated blood pressure cuff.
  • Korotkov Sounds: Series of sounds heard as the cuff is slowly deflated.
    • Five Phases:
      1. Phase 1: Tapping sound indicates systolic blood pressure.
      2. Phase 5: Disappearance of sounds indicates diastolic blood pressure.

Training Objectives

  • Identification of systolic and diastolic blood pressures.
  • Demonstration of the recommended deflation rate while measuring blood pressure.

Video Content
