Aeneas' Journey in The Aeneid Book 3

what's up guys and welcome back to moaning if you guys are new here then what is up my name is erica hey how you doing if you're into the history of the ancient greeks and the romans maybe you're just into the mythology and maybe maybe you just want to see about aeneas wanderings through basically the whole mediterranean well then this is not only the video for you this is also the channel for you you guys are going to want to hit that subscribe button and the bell icon so you know every single time post in the future but also pick up today's video and as you can see from the title we're going to be discussing book three of the indian if i could summarize book three into one sentence it would be that aeneas is wandering trying to find a new troy and failing literally this whole book is just enough failing to find the new future site of where the trojans are going to prosper and they're going to exist in all of this so we have a lot a lot of stops on this journey now i have to say that i'm going to be summarizing the absolute out of this episode and that is because there are lots of things that you don't really need to know in order for the story to make sense and as i said last time you know we have like ania's just retelling what he's done so the whole point of book three is that it's more so an odyssey book right it's more so and when i say odyssey book i don't mean like it's a homecoming book i mean that like the odyssey in regards to how the odyssey was like a giant journey of odysseus trying to get back home so there's a lot of stops there's lots of places there's lots of names and i am going to be summarizing so if you need this for school if you need you know any of this detail for an exam you will just have to go and read it because if i sit here you guys if i sit here and i do every single stop we will be here for hours and hours and hours so with that being said just please keep that in mind and let's just roll into the video where i left you in the last book anias had just explained how troy fell to uh to dido and to all of the phoenicians who now live in north africa so he told this whole story he went through all of that and at the end of the book the trojans were being led the surviving trojans obviously were being led by aeneas to found another site for troy and for them to prosper and for them to live so this book opens with them walking go on this very long walk and they don't walk too far from troy initially so the first stop is a little bit further from troy it's sort of on the other side of mount ida where they get to and uh the reason why aeneas clarifies to dido into his audience of why they thought to go there first is because the people there were very similar to the trojans they had the same gods they had the same lifestyle and so he thought that would be a better place for them to just initially settle but unfortunately when they get there they start you know setting up the walls and nia starts doing all of these you know performing all of these rights to the gods and everything and there was sort of like a little foresty area near where they were so he walks off after just doing these sacrifices and he starts to pull up some plants in the like among the trees and everything pulls up these plants and uh the first plant he pulls up really weirdly starts dripping blood and he's a bit like that's not normal so he tries again second plant does the same thing tries the third plant and now he is spooked because he's like plants shouldn't be bleeding anyways let alone when i pick them what does this mean as he's panicking he hears his ghostly voice basically pop up from the ground there's like a little bit of a mound and the voice comes from there and it turns out to be this guy called polly doris who was a trojan a very long story short priyam had sent to uh you know bring gold to some other king so they would side with the trojans and that didn't go well because the guy ended up killing polly doris taking the goals from the siding with the greeks right that's a very very summarized version of the story of what the ghost of polydorus tells to aeneas aeneas is panicked by this and he runs back to the other trojans that he's brought tells the story they all say yep so this is definitely cursed land but what we should do is probably bury polly doris again give him like correct burial rights and then we'll just move on so they do exactly that right so they they rebury the guy they give him all of these rights and they get back in the boat and they start sailing the second stop that they make is to the island of dilos now during this time delos is it actually has a king people live there nowadays it's just like a site that you can go and visit it's near mykonos right so they go to that island and there is a sacred island to apollo which aeneas tells his audience as well he says just in case you didn't know this is the island that was originally moving which housed apollo's mother when she was pregnant with the twins him and artemis and then when she gave birth apollo then rooted it to the ground so it's now like a proper it's a proper island right where people can go so they pop up there and they meet the king and the king recognizes and kisses from way back when and so he basically accepts them into the palace with open arms and lets them stay while aeneas is there he takes a moment to actually speak to the god he speaks to apollo and he asks what they're supposed to do and where they're supposed to go and apollo comes back to him and apollo you know in like his little divine voice comes to an ears and asleep and all this and he says that where they're supposed to go is where the trojan race actually came from that where their founder came from when he moved from his original place of settling he moved to troy and he then built troy the city they're supposed to go there so when aeneas wakes up they all discuss it like him and the other trojans discuss you know where it was and they realized that one well the the guy that they can remember at least one of the founders of troy is from crete so they're like oh we're supposed to go to crete amazing so when they go down to crete they start building a town down in crete and then all of a sudden a plague hits them and everybody starts dying and aeneas is like what is happening i thought you said we were supposed to come to the land of our predecessor the person who found troy we're here and now we're dying and kisses his dad is also spooked by this and so he says we should probably retrace our steps to go uh back to d loss to find out what apollo actually meant so that's what they do he goes to speak to apollo again aeneas goes to speak to he's like okay so you did listen to me you did hear that i said the whole founder thing but there were two founders of troy and you went to the wrong one so you are not supposed to go to crete because that is jupiter's island he is not going to be happy of course he wasn't happy that you guys were there there were already people there you know i remember dominions and all those people that they're fine they don't need you there it's the other founder who's from italy you're supposed to go there he also explains now the reason why the italians are called the italians because there was a king at one point called italis and so that's where they took their name from but he says yeah that's the plot of land that i meant for you guys to go to and then just wakes up and he's like oh we were wrong so again they get up they go into the boat because now they know where they're supposed to be going and they the first place that they stop off is actually where the harpies live the heartbeat is these terrifying mythological monsters the men rock up there the harpies are just tormenting them and all the men are just like what the are we supposed to do now and in fact one of them one of the harpies has this moment of realizing who enes is and is like i'm going to tell you the story that actually jupiter told to apollo who told me so i'm going to tell you that this is what i hear that yes you're destined for great things and you're supposed to go on to found this whole new race and bring all the trojans with you in the household of gods but it's not going to be done without a ton of hardships okay so there's gonna be a whole famine that hits you it's gonna be rough if all of your men survive this that the other is gonna happen she basically tells them this terrible fate that aeneas is going to uh to to have to endure and denise is terrified he's like that is everything that i have to do on this journey no one told me that naturally he's terrified repeats it to all of the other trojans his dad and crisis is like right that's like definitely our cue to go and so they get back in the boat and then they start sailing again and there's like a list of all these islands that they cross like zacanthus and ithaca and islands that you would all be familiar with again there's just like a lot of moving and a lot of place names and a lot of hero names because it's all like who are these places famous for and all of this that's why i'm sort of really making this quite a quick video because we'll be here for a while they pass all these really famous islands they end up in actium and this is where they hold these trojan games they do that really to celebrate their you know safe passage they celebrated that they made it that far they've all survived they have like wrestling competitions and all this sort of stuff you know it's like ooh it's great in fact it's so great that they stay there for a year but they literally stay in this one spot where they're like you know what i'm pretty happy here that's fine even though they know that that's not where they're supposed to settle and so when they realize the time has come for them to leave aeneas does this really famous thing where he takes a a shield a bronze shield and he nails it to the door of this temple and he writes in this inscription that aeneas dedicates this uh this shield which was taken from like the super tough greeks during the war and all of this so they just have this little landmark there and they get back in the boat and start sailing again the next place they stop is the most important place they stop on this journey right so when they stop next it's actually on the mainland of greece but it's in line with where corfu is and when they arrive there there's first of all like no peoples when they first arrive and they sort of you know they wall the ship they kind of get comfortable they start walking inland and then all of a sudden they start seeing these very familiar faces of people that they definitely know first person that ania sets eyes on is actually andromache so andromache was hector's wife and she now appears in front of aeneas and both of them are kind of a bit like what is going on to the point where andromache runs towards him and thinks that she's seeing his shade thinks that she's seeing a dead aeneas and so ask how hector is ask how her husband is ask if he's okay and aeneas has to be like no no no i'm alive i have no idea how hector is because like i'm i'm real you can definitely you know like touch me let's click all of this sort of stuff i'm real andromeda i'm alive he asked andromache what the fate was for all of the people who left troy who were still alive all the trojans and what happened when they left and uh she was actually taken by pirus who is achilles's son she was taken by him as a war prize so he asked you know are you still married to paris like like what exactly happened with all of that are you guys safe very long story short and dramakey tells us in detail what happened to a lot of the trojans and she said that she yes was taken by paris back to greece which was where they are now but not everybody made it out basically that a number of them were killed she was lucky enough to be taken and to survive all of this so she's taken it to the house of paris to where he he then grew up and where he ends up being king of after achilles dies and when she arrives there he also took a wife of hermione hermione is helen's daughter so he takes her as his wife and apparently she was promised to somebody else she was promised to arrestees and so when arrestees hears the pirates has taken hermione he's a bit like well what and so he gets super mad comes down and he kills peris by slaughtering him on an altar like an animal shocking i know but that's the end of pierce right so he dies there and then and then arrestees take some money to be his wife which like i wonder how you feel if you're that girl but anyways because of that the plot of land that they were on because it was mostly just slaves or whatever it ends up being left to helena's who uh was another trojan and he is actually one of the sons of priem he's the brother of cassandra so he is also some kind of like a like a seer profit person so it was left to him and now they're all trying to like rebuild troy there in this little teeny tiny patch of grease she then asked what happened to him aeneas catches her up on the whole journey because you know she's like what happened to a doubt what happened to all of these people he catches her up with all of that and then he wants to go and speak to helenis to figure out what exactly they are in store for after they leave the spot of land because he knows that they're not supposed to settle there because they have to go again to where the founders of uh of troy came from which he knows is on the other side of italy so he wants to go talk to helenis and helena has a moment where he he he is aeneas and he goes great makes a couple of sacrifices and then he's like okay let me tell you what you're in store for now i would like to clarify that hillels tells us a lot okay helenis tells us a lot of details in this scene it's actually fantastic for ines because there is nothing and there's one thing actually but there's nothing aside from that one thing that's going to shock aeneas for the rest of the time um and and just so that you can see how long it is i brought the original notes i make so the way that i do these videos is that i'll make a large summary and then i'll summarize our summarize i'll summarize until i kind of get everything down to about a sentence that i can just speak on camera but i had to show you my original summary of how long everything that helena says is because i just there's no way that i can repeat it on camera because okay so it goes from here all the way down here hold on hold on all the way down to here this is all hellenist this whole speech from over that one guy one guy saying details in every single line that i was looking at this before i was supposed to film i was looking at my actual like summarized notes then i was like what did i was actually saying then i looked at this whole thing and i was like holy sh helena says a lot the general gist of it is that he tells aeneas sort of what he has to endure along the way to italy so he tells him of all of these like uh different monsters these things that we're familiar with from the odyssey where he wants him of like cilla and charybdis and he wants some of like the the cyclopses and all this he goes through all of that being like you're going to endure this this is how you're going to to defeat them he also tells him that the best route for him would be to go from where they are to not stop on the side of italy that's actually closest to them he's like there are lots of hostile greeks there so like don't stop there but instead keep sailing go past the island of cersei go past aya uh go to the entrance of the underworld and then to continue on uh to where you're you're founding the the new site of troy right so he says that's the route you should take and when you get to the spot of land do not stop and build the city until you see a pig like a sow and she's going to have like all of these these little piglets who are like suckling on her and like all of this and that is the sign of the plot of land that you're supposed to start building on he says don't start building until you see the pigs that was incredibly summarized as you saw from how long the speech is it's just more in detail about that but basically that's the general gist ania says cheers helena says no problem and that's that whilst this is also happening then apollo speaks to anchises and tells him that they have to like set sail like yesterday to start moving and to again not like settle on this little part of italy that's closest to them he's like again that's dangerous but you as the father you are the person who has been blessed by the gods you know you had a kid with venus i mean come on so because of that you know you're now the leader and you should help everybody set sail right now so aeneas and then kisses they start taking presents from um andromache who gives them a bunch of little like trinkets from troy basically and it's like these are the things that pierce brought over and we're gonna give them to you to bring back to the the new site of troy she has a moment as well where she like remembers her son and it's really sad so if you want to read something he's gonna make you cry is what andromache's speaking about her son that was killed and how she's like i still remember his eyes and you're like no everyone cries aeneas cries in the scene and kaiser is crying and drama keeps crying you're crying it's a part of the that you should definitely read but then basically they all get back on the boat and then they start sailing yet again as they're in the boat they sail for a bunch of days and a bunch of nights and when they're sailing there's a moment where um and caissie sees italy in the distance and he has a moment where he goes italy very long story short boat end up on boat ends up even on the bank of sicily it ends up on the coast of sicily now this is when the man this is when the men get really scared sicily is noted as because of mount edna it is like trembling and it has lots of murmurs and so the men are quite scared and they dock the boat and they get onto land but they take refuge in the forest the area because they don't want to be out on the coast because they know that the cyclops live on this island right so they end up there they're terrified and when the morning comes around they start to move back towards the ships and they come across this rando greek man who's like begging with them not to leave them there this man is shaking with fear obviously the trojans are like well who the are you and how did you get here turns out he's one of ulixie's men i was going to say odysseus because in the odyssey obviously odysseus in this he's the alexis but he's one of you lixies as men because when they went to the island of the cyclops he was left behind on the island so he's like i've been here since then i've been here for a hot second please can you take me off the island and bring me home the choice remember listening to him and as they do this they actually see polyphemus pop up from like the hills the polyphemus comes out of his uh his cave and you know all the sheep start running around everyone is scared shitless that enes is just like just get just get in the book just get in we're gonna leave we'll take you home just shut up just stop talking it's not not the time so very long story short they end up sort of sailing around for this guy to try and bring him back to a lounge that he's at least familiar with and whilst they're sort of dotting about they end up in the land of i made a note of where this place uh dribbpanum i probably just butchered that but they end up here and this is a very important stop for aeneas because this is the stop where he loses his dad that ancients sadly dies at this spot um not tragically or anything like that i mean tragically in a sense that like he's and needs to stab but i mean like he's not killed or nothing like that he just dies and um this is the only thing the only part of his journey that no one has warned and about and so it really hits him and when he's telling the phoenician when he's telling dido in north africa this story he says this is the only part that no one told me was going to happen and it hit me really hard that i wish i had been prepared for it because it was really hard it was a really hard part of the journey that if i had had time to be prepared for it then maybe i would have been more well equipped to handle it and so because of that um they then set sail again and they end up coming round to dido and that is how exactly a news went there but i just want to point out that even like when you read this there are so many moments where like hellenis had told nia's like how to handle all of the monsters where he was just like this how you handle silla and charities but on the way back he's just like all of the monsters i'm not handling that like he's very different to what odysseus was like in the odyssey to what ulyxi's in roman mythology was like because odysseus and ulyxies either counterpart they go headfirst into problems and they have to you know figure out the the issues as they come up because they hit every single sea monster you could possibly imagine and they hit every single problem any sailor could imagine whereas aeneas aeneas just goes oh i know that that's the route to this thing i don't want to handle that today so i'm just not going to like like literally he just avoids all of them which doesn't make for as good of a story which is why i did summarize the absolute out of this book because had he stopped had he had to handle all those things i would have spent more time on each and every stop to make sure that you guys understood to make sure that everybody knew of this like epic journey it's not that epic because he's just in the boat most of the time and they get off to sleep and they come back on the bone they get off and come back on whatever like it's very much a standard journey so if you need any of those details though please read the book because obviously aeneas does go into more detail when he's telling the phoenicians when he's telling dido because he wants to make himself seem almost like oh no jesus it's almost like a ulyx right he wants to be this like great traditional hero even though he avoided all the problems and um yeah so that is an insane summary of book three of the aeneid i know that i didn't do that a lot of justice i gave you guys the very basic outline of what happens um but i hope you guys enjoyed it this is a little bit of a shorter video thank god but um yeah so next book we'll be picking up in real time with dido and with the tragedy that happens with our queen of the new phoenicians in north africa so with that being said i'll see you guys next time with a very sad episode here on moaning so i'll see you then [Music]
