Coronary Circulation

Overview

  • Coronary: Derived from Latin 'coronarius' meaning crown.
    • Refers to the coronary blood vessels surrounding the heart like a crown.
  • Circulation: Refers to the flow of blood.

Coronary Circulation

  • Definition: Movement of blood through vessels supplying the myocardium (heart muscle).
  • Myocardium: Heart muscle made up of cardiac muscle cells, known as cardiomyocytes.

Functionality

  • Cardiac Muscle Cells (Cardiomyocytes):
    • Require a steady supply of oxygen and nutrients.
    • Need a mechanism to eliminate waste.
  • Why Coronary Circulation?
    • Despite the heart pumping blood, myocardium is too thick for effective diffusion.
    • Coronary circulation provides an efficient way for the exchange of substances.
