Overview

This lecture explains how to write a review for the B2 First (FCE) exam, covering structure, style, language use, and tips to achieve a strong review.

Purpose and Basics of FCE Reviews

  • FCE reviews are written for magazines, websites, or newspapers.
  • You must both describe and discuss the subject (e.g., book, film, restaurant) and give a recommendation.
  • Reviews should use an informal or neutral style, allowing contractions, phrasal verbs, and idioms.
  • Always target your review to the intended readers, usually students, teachers, and parents.

Structure of a Review

  • Title: Use the name of the item (book, film, restaurant) or a creative, relevant title.
  • Introduction: Identify what you’re reviewing, include details, and try to grab readers’ attention.
  • 1st Body Paragraph: Describe the item in detail.
  • 2nd Body Paragraph: Discuss the specific points or questions required by the task.
  • Conclusion: Summarize your opinion and make a clear recommendation.

Writing Guide and Example Steps

  • Analyze the task: underline parts to describe, discuss, and note the target reader.
  • Use a neutral/informal register suitable for students and teachers.
  • Each paragraph should have a clear focus—description, commentary, recommendation.
  • If you don’t know a real book/film, invent details or adapt a movie/TV show you know.

Sample Model Answers

  • Good reviews set the scene, summarize the plot or experience, highlight positives and negatives, and recommend to readers.
  • Example reviews give personal opinions and explain why the item suits the target audience.
