    • Enforced by the state and court system
    • Aim: Create enforceable behavior standards
    • Note: Laws are narrower in scope compared to ethics and morality
    • Examples: Legal silence on personal ethical dilemmas (e.g., speaking against racist jokes)

    • Not state-enforced but socially pressured

      • Often followed habitually, without reflection
      • Provides comfort and coherence in complex situations
      • Risk of living an unexamined life (Socrates)
  3. Ethics

    • Encourages reflection based on values, principles, purpose
    • Differentiates from habitual morality
    • Purpose:
      • Guide decisions with conscious reflection
      • Evaluate the adequacy of moral systems and laws

Relationships and Distinctions

    • Addresses gaps left by law and morality

    • Ethical beliefs should influence societal laws and moral systems
    • Continuous evolution of laws and morality with ethical insights
