Welcome, today at La Galería we bring you the painting by Frida Kahlo titled The Two Fridas, a true work of art of Mexican painting, we begin. The Two Fridas is an oil painting by Frida Kahlo, painted in 1939. This work constitutes a double self-portrait of the artist, in which her image is duplicated as a mirror and holding hands but with different clothing. Both figures are seated on a green-covered bench and in the background a grayish sky can be seen. In 1939 Frida had been living for more than six months between New York and Paris due to her individual exhibitions and after having achieved recognition among the most prominent artists of the time in Europe. Upon her return to Mexico, sadness invaded the artist, due to the breakup of her marriage with the painter, Diego Rivera, which, added to the increase in her physical pain, was the reason for creating this work, which is one of the most recognized. In this work Frida was presented in her colorful "tehuana" clothing, which was the woman Diego loved or had loved, in the other, Frida is seen in an old Victorian white lace dress, the European version of Frida , which her husband liked less. Some art historians suggest that both figures symbolize Frida's dual heritage, an artery or blood vessel connects the two Fridas, from their hands, passing through their visible hearts (copied from anatomy books). In January 1940 the painting was exhibited together with The Wounded Table, at the International Surrealist Exhibition held in Mexico City, it remained in possession until 1947 when it was acquired by the National Institute of Fine Arts, which transferred it to the Museum of Modern Art in 1966, where it is currently located.
