Overview

  • Purpose: Prescribes policies for the wear and appearance of Army uniforms and insignia for Regular Army, U.S. Army Reserve, and Army National Guard.
  • Applicability: Includes enlisted personnel, officers, Army civilians, veterans, ROTC, and Corps of Cadets.

General Policies

  • Authority: Deputy Chief of Staff, G-1, can approve exceptions or waivers.
  • Enforcement: Portions are punitive; violations can result in administrative action or UCMJ charges.

Appearance and Grooming (Chapter 3)

  • Personal Appearance: Soldiers must present a professional image and adhere to weight standards.
  • Hair and Nails: Standards are defined for male and female personnel; certain styles like eccentric haircuts are prohibited.
  • Tattoos: Certain types and placements are prohibited; annual checks are required.
  • Jewelry: Limited to watches, rings, and small earrings; conservative appearance is mandatory.

Uniforms (Chapters 4-15)

  • Combat Uniform: Authorized year-round; includes coat, trousers, and headgear.
  • Maternity Work Uniforms: Authorized for pregnant Soldiers; similar composition to standard uniforms.
  • Service Uniforms: Includes variations like Army Green Service Uniform, and dress variations.

Insignia and Accoutrements (Chapter 21)

  • Wear of Insignia: Specifies insignia for rank, branch, and unit.
  • Shoulder Sleeve Insignia: Rules for wear during military operations in hostile conditions.

Decorations and Awards (Chapter 22)

  • Types of Awards: Includes decorations, service medals, badges, and unit awards.
  • Prohibited Wear: Certain conditions where awards cannot be worn, such as when in confinement.

Wear by Reserve, Retired, and Former Personnel (Chapter 23)

  • Retired Personnel: Can wear the uniform at military-related ceremonies, but not for political or commercial purposes.
  • Former Members: Authorized to wear for certain ceremonial occasions only.
