suzanne collins is the first book in a trilogy about a future dystopian society the story is set in north america in a country that rose up from the ashes after survivors of droughts storms fires floods hurricanes and wars fought for their lives panum an all-powerful central government that controls the people and resources of 12 districts rules this post-apocalyptic world each district produces unique products that are transported to the capital panum's headquarters and used as luxury items meanwhile the 12 districts struggle to survive often at the hands of heavy and oppressive armed guards security fences keep people from fleeing and brutal tactics keep them under control one such tactic is the annual hunger games in which two children from each district are chosen at random to fight to the death in an arena while the entire country watches on television the hunger games are a punishment for a time when the 12 districts revolted against the capital and were defeated a 13th district was completely destroyed since then panum has held the hunger games to punish the people remind them of their rebellion and warn them that if they rebel again they will all be destroyed once in the hunger games arena the children referred to as tributes fight until only one child remains the remaining tribute and their families are granted lives of ease as well as gifts of food and resources for their district katniss everdeen a 16 year old girl is the novel's main character as the story begins she is preparing to hunt in the forests beyond the boundaries of district 12 a mining district in what is most likely the appalachian mountains it is forbidden to hunt outside the boundaries but katniss risks punishment in order to provide for her family's survival katniss has been hunting and providing for her younger sister prim and her mother who has suffered an emotional breakdown since her father died in a mining accident katniss frequently hunts with her two-year-old friend gail hawthorne gail has expressed feelings for katniss that go beyond friendship and they even kissed once katniss on the other hand is conflicted about her feelings for gail in a world ruled by panem she is terrified of marriage and having children so she avoids all romantic notions katniss and her family prepare to attend the eeriely named reaping ceremony where two children from district 12 will be chosen to compete in the hunger games prim katniss's sister is being drawn as a tribute this year katniss immediately volunteers to take her sister's place as permitted by the game's rules peter millark the baker's son is the other tribute from her district katniss has known peta since she was in her eighth grade years ago when katniss and her family were starving he gave her bread katniss and peeta are immediately chosen as tributes and subjected to a series of ceremonies interviews and makeovers in preparation for the games they meet haymitch abernathy a former district 12 tribute who won the games years ago and is now required to mentor all tributes from his district he is a middle-aged man who spends most of his days drunk but ends up assisting katniss and peeta in numerous ways before the game's end the capital provides katniss and pita with makeup artists costume stylists and a public relations representative effie trinket this team assists in the polishing and grooming of katniss and peta in order for them to put on a good show for the country that is watching their every move during the interviews peta confesses to the camera that he has always had a crush on katniss haymitch encourages both of them to play up that angle because the audience loves it if the crowd support a tribute it attracts more sponsors who donate money supplies food and medicine to be distributed during the games the more sponsors they have the more likely it is that the tribute will live on when the cameras are rolling katniss plays the role of being in love with peta and they gain a lot of fans and support as a result the 24 tributes are placed in the arena an artificially constructed landscape in which they must fight to the death during the games katniss faces numerous challenges both from her fellow competitors and from the mutated creatures and insects that have been placed in the arena to harm the tributes the death of a younger tribute rue with whom katniss had become good friends is the most difficult trial katniss faces katniss ends up rescuing the injured pita and nursing him back to health leaving only the two of them instead of fighting they agree to eat poisoned berries and die together in order to fight back against the games in panum the capital ends the games and declares both of them winners just as they are about to do so the book concludes with peta and katniss being taken home to face their district gail the truth about their feelings for each other and the consequences of defying the government thank you for
