routine and explain to you how a color corrector works and your options in terms of how to conceal the shadow. I owe it a lot to myself. I wanted to get this video up pretty quick, not because of the demand, but because I wanted to rectify my moisturizer video.
If you look at that video, you'll see. I've got quite the stash, so I feel like I got to prove to the world and to myself that I know how to do things. I can facial hair. In that footage, I didn't even shave.
I didn't use a color corrector. I just slapped. on my foundation and called it a day. That's because like I said in the video, I had to reshoot it, got the red lipstick in my teeth. So I was in a bit of a rush.
I was like, dang it, I got to get this out. That didn't work in my favor. I should have taken the steps necessary to conceal that.
So for one thing, if you are just interested in the actual tutorial and me showing you how to cover up your bare shadow with makeup, skip to whatever number right here. Because like I said, I'm going to explain. a lot of reasons why certain things work certain things don't things need to keep in mind and that there are a lot of steps you should be taking when you have facial hair and when you're dealing with makeup so we're going to get right down into it but if you don't know a lot about me my name is Demetria and i am here to make you the long cool woman that i know you can be so i do have my instagram and i do have my facebook page so please follow those and if you like videos like this, be sure to give me a like and subscribe because you will not want to miss what is next. So we're going to get right down into it.
Now, first of all, why is your facial hair noticeable through makeup? There's two reasons. Firstly, there is an uneven texture where your facial hair is compared to the rest of your face. It's not as smooth. It tends to be more rigid, bumpy.
And the second reason is that that there are colors in your facial hair that a foundation itself can't get rid of. So we're going to talk about the uneven texture. So how do we fix that problem? Well, firstly, HRT can help.
Estrogen softens the skin. It smooths it out. And laser hair removal obviously helps. This eliminates the dark hairs, but obviously these are not options for everyone. The best thing you can do for yourself is to have a bang on shaving routine and a great skincare routine.
So you got to be great at shaving. And I know that's not something us girls want to be good at, but we all deal with facial hair. It's a little bit of a problem. So to cover up your beard shadow the most effectively, you need a close clean shave to make that area as smooth as possible.
You should be picking a razor that you're comfortable with and that is effective. When you're shaving, you should be rinsing after two or three swipes to minimize irritation and excessive dragging and to avoid rashes, razor burn or razor bumps. You got to be very sanitary when you're shaving. You're creating cuts in your face that you might not even know about.
So pretty much you should be replacing that blade every six or seven uses. If you're shaving every day then every week put on a new one. And now we get into skincare. It's time to soften up that beard with good products. Skincare will help over time to make this area of skin a little more homogeneous to the rest of your face.
In terms of skincare, I highly recommend you cleanse and you exfoliate. So a cleanser removes excess oil and debris, including makeup, and also helps unclog your pores. An exfoliant removes all those dead skin cells that have no place anymore on your face. Exfoliating speeds up your skin's natural...
It makes it behave younger and more efficiently. Essentially these products help smooth out the skin underneath your facial hair. hair and it helps you to know for sure that there's nothing else coming between this skin and the hair that comes out of it.
A skincare slash shaving tip is always, always shave either in the shower or moments when you step out of it. Your skin relaxes, your pores open up, and the shafts of the hair follicles soften. That way a razor can fly across your face.
Don't take that out of context. Another step in your skincare routine is possibly to invest in an aftershave. No, they are not just manly testosterone filled colognes.
The purpose of aftershave is either to sanitize or soothe the skin. So sanitizing aftershave is usually one that contains alcohol or some form of astringent and these are used to treat and prevent infection in the tiny cuts when you shave and with some products to reduce the chances of razor burn, razor bumps, any form of irritation such as 10 Skin Solution. Then there are what's called soothing aftershaves and these are essentially moisturizers.
So options for moisturizing in your case either involves getting a really good moisturizer that treats you really well or getting an aftershave lotion or what's called a post shave balm use whatever works for you that you get the best results from and that creates a very smooth texture because that's what we want so now we are going to talk about makeup that's why you're here if you want to follow these steps you should not be doing what i think you're doing right now and that is using a lot of foundation or using excessive concealer to minimize your shadow. I've already said that using excessive foundation and concealer doesn't solve the problem concerning facial hair. What ends up happening when you do this is you look very cakey.
You'll end up almost painting makeup onto yourself. Most trans women have a thick enough shadow to where these products are simply not enough. So keep packing that product on. It's not going to get rid of that shadow. I think you have to understand exactly why foundation or concealer does not fix this problem.
For one thing, a shadow is not just darkness. There are underlying colors that come out in your shadow. If you look closely, if you do what they tell you in visual arts class in high school, if you kind of squint, you start to notice underlying colors.
Also when you're kind of understanding how to pick out the right foundation for you, you notice that there's a little bit of yellow, there's a little bit of pink. That's the same thing with facial hair. There are a series of colors in there.
And once I saw it, I could not unsee it. So usually a beard shadow is in a combination of colors ranging from brown, green, gray, and blue. blue.
So this is why your foundation is not working. You have to use what's called a color corrector. So what is a color corrector? What does it do? Well, a color corrector is a form of concealer.
You can get them in various amounts of colors. Color correctors are used to neutralize unwanted colors in your face. You're basically taking one color to cancel out another color. In a lot of online tutorials, in how to cover up your facial hair with makeup you find that there's a lot of people using either a bright orange or deep red here's the deal these methods and those colors don't necessarily work for every single person so the reason i'm explaining to you how there's varying colors in your shadow you have to figure out which colors are in there and that way you can determine which corrector to use to cancel out that color for you specifically.
Here's how it generally works. If you have more of a brown shadow popping through you want to go with more of a pink to red color corrector. That is in the instance where you would use red.
If you have a green bluish hint coming through you should be using a peachy to orange color corrector. And with a blue gray shadow coming through this is when you would go with a very pure orange. So like many makeup techniques, just because it worked for somebody else doesn't mean it's going to work for you specifically. So how do you generally use a color corrector for facial hair?
So there's two main methods. I would say the first method I will demonstrate to you further in this video, basically Do your skincare, moisturize and or prime. Then with a blending domed brush or what have you, you would stipple the corrector in the areas that it is needed. Then you would set the corrector lightly with a powder.
And now that the color is neutralized, you apply your foundation. All homogenous and looking lovely. The second method I seem to find is a lot more lightweight.
In this routine, do your skincare. You could go in, this is optional in this method, you would go in with a light sheer coverage foundation, stipple in with your color corrector like the last one, then you would apply a concealer that matches your skin tone, not lighter, just matches your skin tone over the corrected areas. Then you would loosely set with a powder.
So that is a very lightweight option. You might want to consider it if you're going into a workplace that doesn't like a whole lot of makeup. Now I'm going to discuss a lot of the tutorials that you end up seeing online. And with that, you might be asking, do I really need to use that bright orange of a color corrector? So the way color correctors work, the rule of thumb, the deeper your skin tone, the deeper the color corrector.
should be. And secondly, a question would be, do I really have to mask my facial hair with that color corrector? Here's the deal.
You should only be applying enough to neutralize that color. Once you see the color of that color corrector coming through, it's too much. Basically, you don't need to pack it on to make it fully opaque.
You just need enough to cancel out the unwanted color. So in my personal experience and in seeing a lot of online tutorials, when people use a bright orange and they pack on a lot of it, the thing that often happens is they tend to have an orange tinge. Either it's mixed with their foundation or it just keeps popping through. They're real orange.
The bare shadow is gone, I suppose, but you kind of introduced another color. The rule of thumb with color correcting in general to avoid this problem, don't neutralize an unwanted color just to introduce another one. And another thing with a lot of online tutorials is they use lipstick as an alternative to a color corrector.
Here's where I currently stand on using lipstick. Could you use lipstick as a color corrector? Yes and no. Yes, it can work.
It has worked for me. In my most recent Instagram picture, avoid the eyebrows. I totally screwed those up. Those look like bricks.
I ended up using an orange lipstick in that picture on that day. I wouldn't be lying to say it hasn't worked for me and that it hasn't worked for a lot of people. I can't really get away with saying that.
Here's the reasons why lipstick might not work for you. If you have an inclination to... want to cover up your facial hair, but you don't want full coverage. You don't want to look very thick. And especially in the workplace, you kind of have to deal with wearing casual makeup in most industries.
The way I find when I apply lipstick to ColorCorrect, once you put it on, you got to take your beauty blender and you got to fully stamp at your foundation to make the lipstick disappear. You can't drag it at all. You literally got a stamp on it. When you do that, you use a lot of product.
You'll find if you use lipstick and you use as much as in online tutorials or what people say you got to do with this method, it takes two to three, even four layers of foundation to conceal that lipstick. So it becomes very full coverage very, very quickly. And the second reason lipstick might not work for you is because it could be bad for your skin.
So why would lipstick be bad for your skin? The essential reason is it can cause acne and it can make you break out. There are thick oils and waxes in lipsticks that clog your pores.
Therefore, many lipsticks are comedogenic. An actual term and condition of what could happen is what's called acne cosmetica. This is when it's acne caused literally by putting on makeup, by a makeup application.
If you're acne prone, I would say never. Use a lipstick because think about it this way. You're taking a product that you usually put on your lips onto your face.
If you put something that goes on your lips, that's pretty much putting it on your mouth, which contains a... of bacteria this is why you don't blow on your makeup brushes so you're pretty much taking that bacteria on that lipstick and you're putting it on the rest of your face into your pores what you'll find is that if you're very acne prone you gotta be extra sanitary when you work with makeup but if you are going to swear by lipstick if it's worked for you you do you i think there are just precautions you should be taking Things I would say is if you're using lipstick as a color corrector, don't use that lipstick on your lips. Keep things sanitary.
You should avoid heavy cream bases and you should also avoid a shimmery glossy lipstick because you'll find that shimmer pops through in your foundation. It's kind of obvious you've put lipstick there. So I would go with a matte lipstick.
Okay, so we are going to do the makeup segment. I'm going to show you how to use color corrector to cover up that facial hair area. First thing we're going to do is moisturize.
Okay, so we have moisturized. So we're just going to let that sit for just a little minute. And once you've applied your moisturizer, you're going to put on a foundation primer. So you're going to let that primer set in for a minute or two, and then we're going to get right down into the color corrector.
And as we let that sink in, I'm going to show you a little bit on my methods and what actually ends up working for me in particular. So in my instance, I have been on hormones for nearly two years now, and I have done a fair amount of laser hair removal. It's not super noticeable.
I do have facial hair. The only shadow I really end up getting is in the stash area. The thing with color correctors, only do it in areas it is needed. So we're just going to attack the stash zone.
Now in terms of the colors that show up in my shadow, it mostly ends up being more blue and a little bit of green. In my instance, I'm going to be using the NYX Color Correcting Concealer Palette. And when you are applying your corrector, take a small domed brush.
I actually use this today for work, so that's why it's all dirty. I'm sorry about that. So in my instance, I'm going to select the peachy orange corrector. Here, so you take some of that, you're going to stipple all along the area that is needed.
So when you're applying your corrector and you're stippling it in, always go boom down. Always go down with the grain. You never ever want to go against the grain with makeup if you have facial hair. Pretty much when you're going back and forth, you're coating the hair that's still there. So it emphasizes the hair and it lifts it.
That creates... that uneven texture that you don't want so now i have applied my corrector and now we are going to set it now if you are going to use a packed setting powder you've got to be very minimal i tend to use a small brush to this area it's a small area you're going to take it here here and tap off the excess actually let me look into the lens that mirror is crap and the lighting is crap The importance of setting before you put the foundation in is so you don't get orange face. You don't want the corrector to mix with your foundation. And so now once we have set it, we are going to go in with our foundation to complete the look and stop looking weird right over here.
Okay, so I have applied my foundation. I have neutralized my facial hair. It is gone. I've owned that bitch. I'll own that.
I may put it in. Maybe just do a take two. Okay.
So I have, okay. So I have applied my foundation over the corrected area and all homogenous looking lovely. It has disappeared. If I can do it, so can you.
